The origins of the Maldivian people are shrouded in mystery. The First settlers may well have been from Sri Lanka and Southern India. Some say Aryans, who sailed in their reed boats from Lothal in the Indus Valley about 4,000 years ago, probably followed them. Archeological evidence suggests the existence Hinduism and Buddhism before the country embraced Islam in 1153 A.D.Not surprisingly, the faces of today’s Maldivian display the features of various faces that inhabit the lands around the Indian Ocean shipping and maritime routes, the Maldives has long been a melting pot for African, Arab and South East Asian mariners.
LANGUAGE
The language of the Maldivians is Dhivehi, a language which is placed in the Indro-Indian group of languages. Dhivehi with its roots in Sanskrit and according to some researchers Elu, an ancient form of Sinhala, (spoken in Sri Lanka), is strongly influenced by the major lanuguages of the region. The language has been influenced heavily from Arabic since the advent of the Islam in 1153 and English in more recent times, especially since the introduction of English as a medium of education in the early 1960s.

Visa Requirements No prior visa arrangements are required. A tourist visa of 30 days will be given to visitors with valid travel documents, on arrival. Visitors should be in possession of at least US$25 per day to stay in the Maldives. For those coming from yellow fever infected regions, an international certificate of inoculation is required. Customs Strict laws prohibit the importation of pornographic material, firearms, alcohol and illegal drugs into the country. Exports of coral, shells and other object removed from the marine environment is also prohibited. Tipping is discouraged in the Maldives. Unofficially, if the service is good - and it usually is - it's quite customary to tip room staff and waiters in your resort. US$10 per week is a suitable amount. A few resorts add a 10% service charge, in which case there's no need to tip. Bargaining is limited to tourist shops in and around Singapore Bazaar in Male? and at island village souvenir shops where prices are not fixed.

    http://www.iias.nl/iiasn/iiasn5/insouasi/maloney.html
Where Did the Maldives People Come From?
The Maldives consist of over 1000 small coral islands stretching over 764 km of the Indian Ocean west of Sri Lanka. The country is populated by roughly 180,000 people who call themselves Devehi(s) ('islanders'), and their language is Divehi, which is also the ethnographic term. These islands are grouped mostly into ring-like coral atols, and since atol is a Devehi word it should be spelled correctly with one l. Seafaring explorers of past centuries fancied that the shape of this chain of atols resembled a garland, and indeed on a map it does look like this. So the Archipelago came by the name mala div (garland island, a common word in Indian languages), and the name should properly be spelled Maladiv, not Maldive. By Clarence Maloney The Maldives people are a clear ethnic category, having a unique language derived from Sinhala but grafted on to an earlier Tamil base, and they have a homogeneous cultural tradition. In early medieval times they followed the Sri Lanka type of Buddhism, but in 1153 were converted to Islam by order of their ruler. There is another island located to the north of Maldives territory that belongs culturally to the Maldives, Minicoy (properly, Maliku), which because of events during the colonial period is now held by India as part of its Laksh- advip Island group. Most of the Maldives islands are tiny, less than a mile long, but Minicoy is the largest island populated by Divehi people. The Indian government does not allow foreigners to visit this island.

    Maldives: research perspectives
Despite the fact that the Maldives were mentioned as far back as before the Christian era, they still remain a terra incognita for European scholars. Even in the last 150 years, although a few scientific expeditions have investigated the islands, the Maldives have mostly been the object of study of enthusiastic individual scholars. By Leonard Kulikov The leading (and, in fact, the only) authority on almost all aspects of Maldivian history and culture from the end of nineteenth century until his death in 1937 was H.C.P. Bell, the Archaeological Commissioner of Ceylon, who published three monographs and a number of articles on the Maldives (for his bibliography see H.C.P. Bell: Archaeologist of Ceylon and the Maldives, by B.N. Bell and H.M. Bell, Archetype Publications, 1993).
The dearth of scientific resources is regrettable, since the Maldives have a rich history and a very idiosyncratic culture presenting genuine virgin soil to a number of groups of scientists: linguists, historians, anthropologists, and, as the recent excavations have demonstrated, archaeologists. Investigations on the Maldives were stepped up a little in the seventies but even nowadays the number of scholars engaged in these researches can almost be counted on the fingers of one hand. Unpublished manuscripts
No scientific grammar of Maldivian has so far been published in any European language. Only a few conversational guides and short dictionaries for tourists have been issued. A comprehensive report of a linguistic expedition to the Maldives compiled by Sri Lankans (S. Wijesundera, G.D. Wijayawardhana, J.B. Disanayaka) and Maldivians (H.A. Maniku, M. Luthfie) is still unpublished. This is an almost unique situation since this is also the only official language of an independent state, but it should change in the very near future: S. Gippert-Fritz (Germany) and B. Cain (USA) are going to publish grammatical descriptions; and C.H.B. Reynolds (London) has prepared a Maldivian-English dictionary still remains unpublished.

Archaeological finds indicate that the islands were inhabited as early as 1500 BC, and there are tales of a legendary people called the Redin, who may have been among the earliest of explorers. It is believed that Aryan immigrants from the Indian subcontinent established permanent settlements around 500 BC. The early Maldivians were probably Buddhists or Hindus migrating from the Indian subcontinent. Today, Maldives is perhaps the only country with a hundred per cent Sunni Muslim population. Islam was introduced around AD 800, and the moderate form practised in Maldives has remained virtually unchanged.

Newsfront Pearl culture offers bright potential for the Maldives Monday, 25 August 2003: Introduction of cultured pearls the Maldives, the Indian Ocean island nation, is moving forward with the recent launch of a small-scale commercial operation, and the sector holds potential for creating new jobs and business opportunities. UNDP and Japan are supporting the initiative. For Maldivians, who have depended on the sea for ages for a living, pearl culture can be an addition to fishing and other marine-based livelihoods. After researching the potential of pearl culture in the mid 1990s, the Government and UNDP carried out a successful pilot culturing project on Vaavu atoll with support from the Japanese Human Resources Development Fund The Maldives Marine Research Centre carried out the project, which provided training in oyster culture, pearl seeding and culture, quality control, jewellery-making and marketing.
