Maldives, before the 16th Century

Legend has it that the first Maldivian was converted to Islam by a traveling merchant in 1153. When IBN BATTUTA arrived in 1342, the entire population adhered to Islam. Ibn Battuta not only stayed on the island group for almost a year, but married into the Sultana's family, the Maldives at that time ruled by a woman, Sultana KHADEEJA REHENDHI KABAIDHI.
Another travel account of the Maldives is provided to us by Frenchman FRANCOIS PYRARD, who was shipwrecked here in 1602. According to him, Male was trading with the Malabar coast, Bengal and Aceh.

Maldives Tours People of Maldives The origins of the Maldivians are lost in history. Archaeological finds indicate that the islands were inhabited as early as 1500 BC, and there are tales of a legendary people called the Redin, who may have been among the earliest of explorers. It is believed that Aryan immigrants from the Indian subcontinent established permanent settlements around 500 BC. The early Maldivians were probably Buddhists or Hindus migrating from the Indian subcontinent.
Today, Maldives is perhaps the only country with a hundred percent Sunni Muslim population. Islam was introduced around AD 800, and the moderate form practiced in Maldives has remained virtually unchanged. The main tribes are Singhalese, Dravidian, Arab and African. No other religion, except Islam, is permitted. Several ancient beliefs still survive; for example, islanders fear jinn's-evil spirits that come from the sea, land and sky. These are blamed for everything that cannot be explained by religion or science. Dhivehi, an indigenous language, is spoken only in the Maldives. The script is called "Thaana." English is the main language taught at schools. Most people in Malé and tourist resorts speak English. Flag of Maldives The flag of Maldives is red with a large green rectangle in the center bearing a vertical white crescent; the closed side of the crescent is on the hoist side of the flag.

Language ... Religion Culture and People The culture of Maldives is a combination of many cultures - Cultures brought by the sea farers who settled in Maldives. The influence of the British and the Islamic religion has made Maldives into a melting pot of many different cultures Population According to the latest estimates (July 2004), the population of Maldives is . Only 202 islands of the 1190 islands are inhabited . The population of Male is growing as the locals come here in search of employment and better opportunities. It has grown so much over the past decades that the government has extended Male to include Vilingili Island . The Vilingili Island is being developed as an urban area to accommodate the growing population of Male. Language The main language spoken in Maldives is Dhivehi , a language believed to have its origin from Sanskrit. With the passing of time, and the influence of Islam and the British, the language has evolved to add more Arab and English words to its vocabulary.
Thana , the present Maldivian script was invented in the 16th century and has 24 letters. Unlike other scripts, Thana is written from right to left. This was done because of the increased use of many Arabic words in the Dhivehi language.

11 photos from 2003. Click on any of the small images to enlarge. The Maldives is a beautiful country. The water is crystal clear, a beautiful blue-green color that I think must be etched deep somewhere within the ancestral human brain as the very model of nature's aesthetic elan. The beaches are broad and clean. The people are friendly and themselves beautiful. The beach resorts are the sort of place you expect only exists in the unfulfillable dreams of an overambitious Hollywood set designer: the settings for the private overwater bungalows are just a bit too perfect. When you arrive, your plane circles over a chain of atolls in the midst of clear blue sea, before coming to rest on a palm-fringed island not much larger than the runway and terminal building. You walk outside, where you're met at the curb by brightly-painted boats bobbing in water so clear you can see giant tropical fish by moonlight. It's idyllic. It's also one of the few places I've been that I'd really never consider going back to. I had never really thought about it as a travel destination. This put me on an even footing with most of my peers here in the USA: While the economy is based almost entirely on tourism, and it's a tremendously popular spot with European honeymooners, there are almost no American visitors to the Maldives. In the case of almost everyone I talked to, including some in the tourism business, I was the first person from the United States they'd ever met.

Holidays in Maldives
Culture and Lifestyle Islam is the core religion followed in Maldives and no other religion is permitted. Here, it has a unique character than other Islamic countries. Maldivians fear jinnis - evil spirits which come from the sea, land and sky and are accountable for everything that cannot be explained by religion or science. Maldives has a very few customs which are actually mere formalities. The people here are mostly working engaged in fishing trade. Other economic activities are shipping, coconut farming and fruit or vegetable production. Recent years have been characterized by modernisation, rapid economic growth, and improvement in most social indicators. The government works to preserve the environmental quality of the islands and further developing tourism and fishing. Tourist Attractions in Maldives Male', the capital of the Maldives, is the commercial centre, where from the government operates. Many important historical and religious landmarks are located here. It has been known as the Sultan's Island in the past. It is a clean and tidy city with mosques, markets, small streets. With a certain charm of its own, it is the busiest and most populous island in Maldives.

Though performances of traditional music and dance are not everyday events, there is a contemporary Divehi culture which is strong and adaptive, despite foreign influences which range from Hindi movies and Oriental martial arts to Michael Jackson and Moslem fundamentalism. Western fashions, pop music and videos are visible in the capital, but on public occasions, like the beginning and end of Ramadan, the celebrations always have a distinctly Maldivian touch.
A bodu beru means a big drum, and gives its name to the best known form of traditional music and dance. It's what tourist resorts put on for a local culture night, and it can be quite sophisticated and compelling. Dancers begin with a slow, nonchalant swaying and swinging of the arms, and become more animated as the tempo increases, finishing in a rhythmic frenzy. There are four to six drummers in an ensemble, and the sound has strong African influences. Contemporary local rock bands often perform at resorts where they do credible covers of the usual old favorites. Performing for a local audience they may incorporate elements of bodu beru in their music, with lots of percussion and extended drum solos. Cassettes from local bands are sold in Malé music shops.
Fish and rice are the staple foods of Maldivians with meat and chicken eaten only on special occasions. National dishes include fried fish, fish curry and fish soup. Areca nut (an oval nut chewed with betel leaf, cloves and lime) is the equivalent of an after-dinner mint. Alcohol is only available in tourist resorts. The local brew is raa, a sweet and delicious toddy tapped from the crown of the palm trunk. Apart from coconuts, there are very few fruits and vegetables grown on the islands, so most of the food served at tourist resorts is imported.

Culture
