Culture of Maldives
The culture of maldives is replete with the ways of the sea farers who settled on the islands.Traditional music and dance performances are not everyday affairs, however there is a strong, impregnable and highly adaptive contemporary Dhivehi culture which has survived even in the face of such all pervading foreign influences ranging from Bollywood movies and Oriental martial arts to western music and Moslem fanaticism.
Music and Dance
The bodu beru is the best known form of traditional music and dance. It derives its name from a big drum by the same name. In the tourist resorts it is put on with great elan for a local culture night. It is featured by a gradual increase in the tempo of the dancers ending up in a rhythmic frenzy. Four to six drummers accompany the performance in an ensemble, and the beats as well as the sound have strong African influences.

Maldives; the first Islamic country to legalise homosexuality and gay marriages? Speculation is mounting that Gayyoom's brother Abdulla Hameed, Maldives' most notorious bi-sexual, is going to propose a change of law in the upcoming constitutional reform agenda which is now underway. Homosexuality has been a trend of the ruling elite in the Maldives and this is one of the best known public secrets in the Maldives. In addition to homosexuality, paedophilia is common among this princely, powerful and proud 'elite', who have a deep conviction that the wealth of the country belongs to them and that the people of Maldives are their slaves. read more Special Report Gayyoom's agenda hard at work DO's credibility has once again risen high once again today after Gayyoom's illicit operations in which he sealed the fate of the Constitution of the Maldives by electing Abbas Ibrahim as the Speaker of the Majlis.

Language

The language of the Maldivians is Dhivehi, a language which is placed in the Indro-Indian group of languages. Dhivehi with its roots in Sanskrit and according to some researchers Elu, an ancient form of Sinhala, (spoken in Sri Lanka), is strongly influenced by the major lanuguages of the region. The language has been influenced heavily from Arabic since the advent of the Islam in 1153 and English in more recent times, especially since the introduction of English as a medium of education in the early 1960s.
Given the wide dispersion of islands it is not surprising that the vocabulary and pronunciation vary from atoll to atoll, with the difference being more significant in the dialects spoken in the southernmost atolls. The Maldivian script known as thaana was invented during the 16th century soon after the country was liberated from Portuguese rule. Unlike former scripts thaana is written from right to left. This was devised to accommodate Arabic words that are frequently used in Dhivehi. There are 24 letters in the thaana alphabet.
Family Life
The close-knit island communities practice mutual aid to survive difficult circumstances. A system of extended families provide a safety net for members of a family going through a difficult period. In addition to the parents other members of the family also contribute in the care of children. Traditionally men go out fishing during the day and women are responsible to look after the affairs of the family and vary often the community. This remains so even today in smaller island communities.

Dancing to the rhythm of a pulsating traditional drum, or moving flowingly to the music created by rings on metal pots, is part of local culture. Laid back and relaxed, the lifestyle takes on a simplicity that is near idyllic. At the same time, the movers and the shakers are keeping ahead with the changing world, making modern music and technology as much a part of the Maldivian culture as the handbeating of tropical drums. Traditional dances and music may not be an everyday event but there are occasions where traditional music and dances are performed. Though traditional dresses are not used by present day generation there are many types of traditional dresses made for both sexes Like the unique geographical formation, the cultural events and ceremonials are unique according to the event that is celebrated or performed. Naming a newborn child, Bodumaloodhu (a prayer accompanied with festive meal), Eid festival and circumcision of male child are few events that take place where the taste of rich cultural 'cocktail' can be experienced. Abdul Rahman (sorry Michael- we could not resist it) and Fareesha are true heroes of Maldives. DO requested for permission to publish a photograph of the couple but they declined on the grounds that it may give the wrong person the opportunity to eliminate them. MC has received a threatening letter from a Singapore Law firm Harry Elias Partnership (below), which says " we act for the President of Maldives, its government and her servants", what an admission to Gayyoom's view on who he is, what he is and who we the Maldivians are. What has been said for years by the writers for the Maldives Culture website is being proved true, as evidenced by the 9 June 2004 reform speech from the President of Maldives himself.
The editors accept that 'His Excellency the President is not under the control of one Koli Ali Maniku'. We have always understood the president is responsible for his own actions and the actions of his National Security Service "MC has removed an anonymous email about Koli Ali Manik that made wide-ranging but unsupported allegations.

Rob, Annie and I met up with Martin and the crew of Nanou in the port of Galle, Sri Lanka where we were heading for the Maldives archipelago.  Over the last six months we had immersed ourselves in South Asian history, folklore and culture and now we hope to follow in Thor Heyerdahl footsteps, filming a documentary film as we attempted to solve the Maldives mystery. Rob and I had met Martin some months earlier and when I told him of our plans to film in the Maldives and Sri Lanka, he invited us to join him on his 60 foot, cutter rig yacht, Nanou.  Being a photographer and filmmaker himself he agreed to come on board as one of our sponsors. On the morning of the third day, just as we came in sight of North Male atoll, we became aware that our trolling line had just hooked a large swordfish.  The crew sprang into action, Rob, Martin and I grabbed various video and still cameras while Nigel and Jason reeled it in.  Haven and Anne got into the act as we attempted to land the fish onto the deck.  In the ensuing altercation, the crew sustained a few injuries trying to avoid being impaled by the sword but we were able to get most of the melee on film.
