The early Buddhist Malay kingdom of Srivijaya, based at what is now Palembang, Sumatra, dominated much of the Malay peninsula from the 9th to the 13th centuries AD. The powerful Hindu kingdom of Majapahit, based on Java, gained control of the Malay peninsula in the 14th century. Conversion of the Malays to Islam, beginning in the early 14th century, accelerated with the rise of the state of Malacca under the rule of a Muslim prince in the 15th century. Malacca was a major regional entrepot, where Chinese, Arab, Malay, and Indian merchants traded precious goods. Drawn by this rich trade, a Portuguese fleet conquered Malacca in 1511, marking the beginning of European expansion in Southeast Asia. The Dutch ousted the Portuguese from Malacca in 1641 and, in 1795, were themselves replaced by the British, who had occupied Penang in 1786.
In 1826, the British settlements of Malacca, Penang, and Singapore were combined to form the Colony of the Straits Settlements. From these strongpoints, in the 19th and early 20th centuries the British established protectorates over the Malay sultanates on the peninsula. Four of these states were consolidated in 1895 as the Federated Malay States.

History of Malaya (Malaysia) translated by myself. In the early 14th Century, Malacca (or Melaka in Malay language) is just a small fishing village, in the then Malay Peninsula (south of Thailand). The small fishing village became of importance after the arrival of Parameswara from Majapahit (a Palembang Island of Indonesia). Parameswara had led a failed attempt rebellion against the ruler of Majapahit and later fled to Temasik (now named Singapore). Parameswara ruled Temasik for couple of years after killing the local ruler there. But Siam (Thailand’s old name), who claims the sovereignty of Temasik then attack Parameswara with the help of forces from Pahang (later a Malay state) and Parameswara fled with his Bugis and "orang laut" followers to the estuary of Malacca river. There, Parameswara settled down and ruled Malacca which prospers over the years from the taxes of shipping, spice traders and travellers. When Admiral Yin Ching, China's Ming Dynasty's envoy arrived in Malacca in 1403, Malacca had become a prosperous port with a population of 2,000 people. China's Emperor Yung Lo’s (1403-24) envoy, Admiral Cheng Ho later visited Malacca in 1408 and 1411, with gifts for the ruler. Malacca pledge allegiance to China and seek protection from Siam. Parameswara (1400 - 14) passed away in 1414 and the throne was taken over by his son, Megat Iskandar Shah who also send envoys to China in 1414, 1415, 1416 and 1418. Megat Iskandar Shah ruled from 1414 to 1424, Sri Maharaja ruled from 1424 to 1444 and Muzaffar Shah ruled 1445 to 1459.

October 20, 2003 Christian Human Rights Activist Found Guilty After Longest Trial in Malaysian History
Christian human rights activist Irene Fernandez has been sentenced to one year in prison after exposing human rights abuses at immigration camps in Malaysia.
She was found guilty on October 16, 2003 by the Kuala Lumpur Magistrates Court of "maliciously publishing false news" after releasing a memorandum at a press conference in 1995 on alleged torture and death in immigration detention centers.
Her trial, which began in June 1996, has been the longest criminal trial in Malaysian history. She was arrested in 1996, then freed on bail, after releasing a report in 1994 which accused immigration camp guards of beating and sexually assaulting detainees. She has been released on bail pending an appeal at the High Court.
Irene Fernandez is a Roman Catholic of Indian background with three children aged between 22 and 18. She is head of the Tenaganita rights group which helps plantation workers and sex workers, and helps run HIV awareness programs. As part of their program for AIDS victims, the group interviewed migrant workers. This led to the discovery of their mistreatment which they then asked a newspaper to publicize.
The Malaysian Government prevented this report from appearing, but Tenaganita ran a press conference with two detainees to highlight the alleged abuses. The head of the police with responsibility for the camps then filed a case of criminal defamation against Ms Fernandez.

Irene Fernandez: Appeals Process Stalled after the Longest Trial in Malaysian History
Malaysian government attempts to silence health and migrant workers' rights defender, Irene Fernandez, by indefinitely prolonging legal proceedings Physicians for Human Rights has learned that more than a year after the end of her seven-year trial, Malaysian health and human rights activist Irene Fernandez is still waiting for her appeal to be processed. Ms. Fernandez was accused of 'maliciously publishing false news' and underwent the longest trial in Malaysia's history. In October 2003, she was sentenced to a 12-month prison term, after which she immediately filed notice of her appeal. The Malaysian authorities have yet to set a court date for the appeal, and it is unclear at what point they plan to enforce her sentence. Ms. Fernandez has been free on bail in the months since the court's ruling, though her right to travel is severely restricted. The lengthy and stressful legal proceedings are taking a toll on Ms. Fernandez's health. Over the course of her seven-year trial, she appeared in court a staggering 310 times.1 Additionally, the Malaysian government's relentless delays have caused tremendous strain on Ms. Fernandez's human rights organization, Tenaganita (http://www.tenaganita.net/html/index.php), as the time, energy and resources devoted to her defense significantly impede the group's ability to effectively conduct its work.

Southeast Asia Travel Guide ... Map of Malaysia When I was first approached with the idea of writing an article on the Anwar Ibrahim debacle, I backed off. It was a move made out of caution - I didn't want to step on any toes I had no right being near to in the first place. But after thinking about it for a while, it dawned upon me that who was I going to shield anyway? The whole world practically knows about it, and whether I write about it or not perhaps makes no difference. Still, today's a fine Sunday morning here in Malaysia and I haven't much else to do but to relax before another gruelling week at work. So I said to myself, why not? Why not take a neutral perspective on matters and contribute to the discussion? So here it is - the Anwar Ibrahim saga from where I stand. Before I begin, perhaps it would be best to ascertain the fact that I essentially am on nobody's side. For quite a while I have been apolitical and I don't see any reason why I should cross over to either side of the fence.

    Introduction
Armenians are one of the most scattered races in the world. Whether enticed by better prospects elsewhere or forced to flee by conquest, they have put down roots in many new lands. When conditions for some Armenians long domiciled in Persia became untenable, they looked for new homes, turning towards India and later, Penang and Singapore. Although fewer than 830 Armenians ever lived in Singapore and Malaysia, they played a significant role in the social, civic and economic life of the early British trading settlements in both countries.

Case 519: MALAYPRK: Taman Negara Rain Forest and Tourism
    I. Identification
    1. The Issue
The Taman Negara rain forest in Malaysia is said to be the world's oldest rain forest. Untouched by ice age glaciers, the rain forest has stayed essentially the same for the last 130 million years. Within its confines is Gunung Tahan, the highest mountain in west Malaysia. This case study examines the impact of tourism on the Taman Negara rain forest and its ancestral inhabitants.
    2. Description
This section describes the case issues in several parts:
The Taman Negara rainforest is said to be the oldest rainforest in the world. It was the first park of any type in Malaysia. The oldness of the area is due to its southerly location which left it untouched by the ice ages and the glaciers. Thus, the forest is thought to be 130 years old. (About Malaysia Parks, Chapter 1, "Taman Negara: The National Park", pp. 1-29) "There is evidence that during the period of the Middle Stone Age (about 8,000 to 2,000 bc), Mesolithic people lived in rock shelters and caves in the limestone hills of the Malay peninsula." (Malaysia, "History: Beginnings", p. 25.) These people are thought to have been the ancestors of Negrito aborigines and now are known as the Semang and Jakun peoples.
