Second Prize From Evolution to Revolution: A History of Malaysia by Patrick Aron ANCIENT MALAYSIA 35,000 - 100 BC In the heart of Southeast Asia, Malaysia has always been pivotal to the trade routes of Europe, the Orient, India and China. The first peoples to settle were the ancestors of the Orang Asli, the indigenous peoples of peninsular Malaysia, who were "probably the pioneers of a general movement from China and Tibet." "Historians often speak of Malaysia's ancient past as something 'shrouded in mystery' a kind of black hole in Asian history." Malaysia is in fact an ancient land, populated by modern humans as early as 35,000 BC. The oldest known evidence of Homo Sapiens was a skull discovered in the Niah Caves in Sarawak. On the peninsula, Stone Age tools have been found dating from about 10,000 BC and have been suggested to belong to the Negrito people, one of the earliest known groups to have inhabited the peninsula. Much later, about 2,500 years before Christ, "a much more technologically advanced group [of people we now call the Proto-Malays] migrated to the peninsula from China" . A people of seafarers and farmers, "their advances into the peninsula forced the Negritos into the hills and jungles."

Malaysia History and Culture
History Aboriginal Malays (Orang Asli) began moving down the Malay peninsula from south-western China about 10,000 years ago. The peninsula came under the rule of the Cambodian-based Funan, the Sumatran-based Srivijaya and the Java-based Majapahit empires, before the Chinese arrived in Melaka in 1405. Islam arrived in Melaka at about the same time and spread rapidly. Melaka's wealth soon attracted European powers, and the Portuguese took control in 1511, followed by the Dutch in 1641. The British established a thriving port in Penang in 1786 and took over Melaka in 1795. The British colonised the interior of the peninsula when tin was discovered. East Malaysia came into British hands via the adventurer James Brooke (who was made Rajah of Sarawak in 1841 after suppressing a revolt against the Sultan of Brunei) and the North Borneo Company (which administered Sabah from 1882). Britain took formal control of both Sabah and Sarawak after WW II. The indigenous labour supply was insufficient for the needs of the developing rubber and tin industries, so the British brought large numbers of Indians into the country, altering the peninsula's racial mix.

Malaysia Malaysia 's history has been one of continual interaction with foreign powers and influences because of its strategic position between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. Its location has made it the meeting place for both traders and travellers alike. Hindu-Buddhist influence was strong in the northwest before the coming of Islam. Archaeological findings in Kedah provide evidence of a Hindu-Buddhist civilization that dated back to 300AD. By 1400, when the Malacca Malay Kingdom was at the height of its power, Islam had become a major influence. By 1511, however, Malacca had fallen to the Portuguese. Meanwhile the Dutch had been establishing their influence and presence in Java. By 1641, the Dutch had also taken over Malacca but they in turn lost it to the British who had been slowly consolidating their hold on the Malay states, following Francis Light's arrival in Penang in 1786. By 1815 Malacca was in British hands and in 1819, Stamford Raffles founded Singapore. Thereafter, through treaties, relentless political pressure and diplomacy, the British slowly extended their control over all the states of the Malay Peninsula.

history of Nestl© Invention of the world's first infant cereal.
In 1867, Henri Nestl©, a chemist who lived in Vevey,
became interested in baby food because of the high infant mortality rate in Switzerland at the time. Recognising the important need to help nourish infants, he developed and started manufacturing a milk food product for babies whose mothers were unable to breastfeed. Shortly after he created his pioneer product, it saved the life of a baby who had rejected his mother's milk. Henri Nestl©'s new product soon became known worldwide as Farine Lact©e Nestl© (Nestl©'s milk food).
The Nestl© Coat-of-Arms.
Henri Nestl© called his company Societ© Farine Lact©e Henri Nestl© and used his name, which in German means "little nest" as his company logo - a nest with a mother bird feeding her young. Since 1867, it has become a universally understood symbol, evoking a sense of security, maternity, affection, nature, nourishment, family and tradition. Today, it is the central element in Nestl©'s corporate identity.

In subsequent centuries the area was under the influence and loose control of various Thai and Indonesian empires, including the great Sumatra-based civilisation of Sri Vijaya. The city of Malacca, founded by a Sumatran prince at the beginning of the 15th century, became the center of an Islamic empire and was to remain the primary trading post between India and China for more than 300 years. In 1511, the control of Malacca went to the spice-trading Portuguese. In 1641, the Dutch defeated the Portuguese and ruled for 154 years. They used imported Dutch stone to construct distinctive pink buildings, many of which still stand. The British established a thriving port in Penang in 1786 and took over Malacca in 1795. The British, discovered tin, and moved inland. Kuala Lumpur, was founded at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers in 1864. The British began building colonial-style structures and made it the capital of the Protected Malay States. Malay nationalism and desire for self-rule was felt around the 1930s. A call for independence was made but the move was halted by the Second World War. Later, the movement resumed and independence was declared on the 31st of August, 1957.

You are in: Medical Malaysia History
The History of MPS In the United Kingdom at the end of the nineteenth century doctors and dentists had a difficult time. They had to deal with libellous accusations by patients and an increasing number of unregistered and unqualified quacks. In the 1880s a number of high profile negligence and criminal cases made the headlines, and it soon became clear that individual doctors did not have the resources to defend themselves in these cases. The need for strength in numbers was obvious and a number of discretionary mutual medical defence organisations were started. MPS, known initially as the (London and Counties) Medical Protection Society, was formed in 1892. Within two years it had more than a thousand members. The membership benefits provided by the organisation gradually grew – at first MPS only provided discretionary indemnities to fund members’ legal costs – but over time this expanded to include any damages and costs awarded in the case. By the 1940's MPS was providing protection to members overseas. Today we provide a wide variety of services to members around the world. The medical profession has changed dramatically over the last hundred years. The founding members of MPS would not recognise the complex environment in which doctors now work, and would be baffled by the legal problems that result. What they would recognise is that, just as in 1892, doctors need MPS as much as ever – a mutual organisation where fellow professionals use their judgement to provide a flexible range of benefits that meet the evolving needs of members.

Honestly, where is Malaysia’s ‘Moderate Islam’ project heading?
Malaysia is, at the moment at least, hot stuff. From the ever-increasing number of foreign tourists who flock to the shopping malls of the country in search of good bargains and a vibrant nightlife; to foreign investors who remain undeterred by Malaysia’s rising labour costs thanks to the guaranteed assurance that the skilled labour of Malaysia is able to manufacture goods and offer services that are technologically more advanced than what is on offer in neighbouring countries. It is for these reasons that Malaysia remains on the world map as both a tourist destination and a viable country to invest in.
The other major selling point that is currently in Malaysia’s favour is the fact that the country’s political leadership has gone out of its way to present an image of Malaysia as a bastion of what is sometimes called ‘Moderate Islam’. Malaysia today – along with Muslim countries like Turkey, Pakistan and Indonesia – is considered a major ally in Washington’s unilateral ‘war on terror’ and the government of Malaysia, cognisant of the geopolitical realities that it has to address and cope with, has deployed an image in keeping with this new-found role. More than ever, the government of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi has projected itself as the bastion of Islamic moderation and has sold the image of the country as an alternative model to other less-than-liberal regimes in the Arab world.
