Malaysia's 10th General Election summary (see below) PRE-HISTORIC MALAYSIA
Scientists have found archaeological evidence of human inhabitants in the Niah Caves in Sarawak from about 40,000 years ago. The earliest evidence of inhabitants on the Malay Peninsula that has been found is from about 10,000 years ago. Neolithic culture was well established by 2500-1500 BC. Most scholars believe the earliest settlers on the Malay Peninsula came overland from southern China in small groups over a period of thousands of years. These early inhabitants became the ancestors of the Orang Asli. During the 1000's B.C., new groups of migrants who spoke a language related to Malay came to Malaysia. The ancestors of these people had traveled by sea from south China to Taiwan, and later from Taiwan to Borneo and the Philippines. These people became the ancestors of the Malays and the Orang Laut. The newcomers settled mainly in the coastal areas of the peninsula. Small Malayan kingdoms existed in the 2nd or 3rd centuries AD, when adventurers from India arrived and initiated more than 1,000 years of Indian influence. About A.D. 1400, a group of Malay-speaking migrants came to the Malay Peninsula from Srivijaya, a trading kingdom on the island of Sumatra (now part of Indonesia). Led by a Sumatran prince called Paramesvara, these newly arrived immigrants established a commercial kingdom called

HISTORY OF MALAYSIA
TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN PUTRA
For his contributions and sacrifices in bringing the country from colonialism to independence, Tunku Abdul Rahman is known as the Father of Independence. He became the first prime minister of the Federation of Malaya from 1957 to 1963, and of Malaysia from 1963 to 1970. Tunku was born on February 8, 1903 in Alor Setar, the capital of the State of Kedah. He is the seventh prince of Sultan Abdul Hamid Shah, the twenty fourth Sultan of Kedah, and Che Manjalara. Said to be a robust and bright boy with a particular fondness for sports, Tunku received his early education at the Debsurin School, Bangkok and Penang Free School. On a Kedah Government scholarship, he went on to study at St. Catherine's College, Cambridge University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in law and history in 1925. A firsthand experience in racial discrimination with the college's administration was said to have intensified his conviction in fighting for equality and ignited his desire in making his homeland an independent state, free from British colonialism. His leadership flair also unfolded in England. Realizing the Malay students there were not represented by any organization, he established the Kesatuan Melayu Great Britain (Malay Association of Great Britain) and became its first secretary.

Malaysia's History and Background Ancient Malaysia - Negrito aborigines are considered to be one of the first groups of people to inhabit the Malaysian peninsula. When the Proto-Malays, made up of seafarers and farmers, came to the peninsula they sent the Negritos into the jungles and hills. The Proto-Malays came from China and were technologically advanced, especially in comparison to the Negritos. After the Proto-Malays came the Deutero-Malays, which were made up of many different people - Arabs, Chinese, Indians, Proto-Malays, and Siamese. The Deutero-Malays were proficient in their use of iron and when they united with Indonesians, they combined to make up the people known today as the Malay.

History and Government
History: In the same year, communist guerrillas – the bulk of whom were ethnic Chinese – launched an armed struggle aimed at establishing an independent socialist state. ‘The Emergency’, as the colonial authorities dubbed it, lasted formally until 1960. However, the serious fighting was over by the mid-1950s and, in 1957, Britain proceeded with its plan to grant independence to the Federation of Malaya. In 1963, the Federation of Malaya merged with Singapore and the former British colonies of Sarawak and Sabah (North Borneo) to form Malaysia. Singapore seceded to become an independent state in its own right in 1965, leaving Malaysia in its present form. Tunku Abdul Rahman, who had taken over as premier of the federation in 1957, remained as Prime Minister of the newly expanded republic. He remained in office until 1970, when he was replaced by Tunku Abdul Razak. The dominant political organisation was the United Malay National Organisation (UMNO), which allied itself with several smaller formations to create the Barisan Nasional (NF, National Front). In 1982, the NF won the general election scheduled for that year under the new leadership of Mahathir Mohammed.

According to anthropologists and historians, Pahang was also home to the Middle Age men and the Last Stone Age (early Bronze Age men) and the Semang aborigine tribe. Long famous for the deposits of tin and gold found along the upper reaches of Sungai Tembeling (Tembeling River), Pahang had attracted the interest of outside powers even before the founding of Melaka in 1400. Under the control of the maritime empire of Srivijaya (centered around Palembang in southeast Sumatra), Pahang had expanded to cover the entire southern portion of the Malay Peninsula in the 8th and 9th centuries. With the collapse of Srivijaya around 1000, Pahang was claimed first by the Siamese and then, in the late fifteenth century, by Melaka. After Melaka fell to the Portuguese in 1511, Pahang became a key part of the territorial struggles between Acheh, Johor, the Portuguese, and the Dutch. Repeated raids, invasions, and occupations devastated the state until the decline of both Achenese and Portuguese power in the early 17th century that allowed Johor to re-establish its influence and became the great Johor-Riau Empire.

Malaysia - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Malaysia has historically been the meeting place of vastly different cultures, religions, and people. People from all over the world have come to settle in Malaysia, each having brought something new to the country. Some, of course, took things away from Malaysia.
Early Malaysian history begins with the migration of Chinese people onto the Malaysian peninsula about 10,000 years ago. For thousands of years, the people of Malaysia lived somewhat isolated from the rest of the world. In 1 AD, two unrelated events would dramatically change Malaysia and begin bringing people from all over the world to Malaysia's shores.
At the time, India was getting gold and other metals from the Roman Empire and China. Around 1 AD, the Chinese Huns cut off the land route between India and China and the Roman emperor Vespasian ended shipments of gold to India. Desperate to resume the importation of gold and other metals, India sent huge ships with hundreds of men to Southeast Asiaincluding Malaysiato find other sources. But when the Indians arrived on the Malay Peninsula, they didn't find goldthey found tin. While not as valuable as gold, tin provided plenty of wealth to the new Indian settlers.

After World War II and the Japanese occupation from 1941-45, the British created the Malayan Union 1946.This was abandoned in 1948 and the Federation of Malaya emerged in its place. The Federation gained its independence from Britain on 31 August 1957. Malaysia History
Early history of Malaysia is obscure because of a lack of local documents and the absence of archaeological remains. Ten thousand years ago the Malays—Orang Asli—probably began to move down the peninsula from a probable southwestern Chinese starting point. Malaysia (History)
The region may have been part of the Buddhist Sri Vijaya kingdom (8th-13th cent.), converted (15th cent.) to Islam as part of a Muslim Malay state. The Malayan Peninsula was first visited by Europeans in the 16th cent. Malacca, on the west coast, was occupied by Portugal (1511) and the Dutch (1641).

Formation
By the early 1970s Australia was moving towards a closer engagement with Asia. This was reflected in growing numbers of courses on the region at tertiary institutions, attracting an inflow of scholars from overseas to join Australians who had pioneered Asian studies in the 1950s and 60s at centres such as Monash University and the Australian National University.
In 1974 Sydney University established a Centre for Asian Studies to involve scholars across a wide range of disciplines; the humanities, social and medical sciences etc. This development was mirrored at other universities and coalesced into a drive to set up an institution at national level, leading to the formation in 1976 of the Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA). An inaugural conference was held in Melbourne in that year, with subsequent meetings to take place in alternate years.
For the first three years the Society operated without a membership fee, relying on support from ASAA and the institutions of members. In 1980/1 a $3 annual fee was adopted, remaining at this level until 1987 when it was raised to $5 and subsequently to $10 in 1996 where it now stands.

Malaysia's History Geography Strategically situated in the southern tip of South East Asia with the Indian Ocean and the Straits of Melaka on the west and the South China Sea in the east, Malaya(Malaysia) was at the centre of trade routes between India, the Middle East, Europe, China and Japan. This not only invited trading activities but also opened up the country to a sizable immigrant population and consequently to religious, linguistic and cultural influences. Early History Until the 19th century, Malaya consisted of various fragmented states owning to their geographical locations, with each individual area developing independently under its own leader. They were loosely linked to various power centres, submitting to the loss of a degree of sovereignty in exchange for the benefits of trade and assurance of protection against enemies. Trade shaped the history of the region. Indian merchants who arrived more than 1,700years ago brought Buddhism and Hinduism as well as concepts of political power. Numerous small settlements were established in the west coast areas of Kedah, Prai and Perak. From the 5th century onwards, trade with China took fruit and many preferred the east coast trading centres such as Pulau Tioman and possibly Kuala Berang in Terengganu and a land called Langkasuka, some believe to be situated in Kelantan but evidence of such a place has yet to be found. Srivijaya Srivijaya, centred around Palembang and South East Sumatra, exercised suzerainty over the Melaka Straits from the 7th Century to about the 13th Century. Srivijaya's rise was due to China's patronage and its willingness to acknowledge China's suzerainty over a period of time. Its dominance in the Melaka Straits grew with Melaka's acceptance of Srivijaya's overlordship. This was a consequence of Melaka's recognition that it was to their advantage to do so in order to obtain a share of Srivijaya's prosperity and thriving trade. The 12th century saw a weakening of Srivijaya and an emergence of independence in the Malay society, especially in Kedah

More than just another flag...
To many young Malaysians, the national flag - commonly known as Jalur Gemilang - may be just another piece of cloth with a particular design of stars and stripes, and revered only on special occasions. but there is more to it than meets the eye. Today's flag has its roots in an opinion poll held throughout Malaya in 1949 - as the country was known then - to help pick out the right one from three designs by finalists in a nationwide contest. The first design had a symbol of two sheaths of keris crossed in the middle of the flag surrounded by a sea of 1 five-pointed stars. The second one had an almost similar pattern of the traditional Malay weapon, except that it had two circles of 11 five-pointed stars around it. The third design was the slightly familiar grid of 11 white and blue stripes, topped with a yellow crescent moon on the left hand corner.
