History: The region now known as Malaysia was first mentioned in Chinese and Sanskrit records of the 7th and 8th centuries. In subsequent centuries the area was under the influence of Thai and Indonesian empires until, in the 15th century, it became a centre of Islamic influence centred on Malacca. Colonised by the British in the 19th century, the 11 separate states of Peninsular Malaysia fell to the Japanese during the Second World War. In 1946, as British Protectorates, they were united in the Malayan Union, which became the Federation of Malaya in 1948. In the same year, communist guerrillas launched an armed independence struggle which continued until 1960, although Malaya became independent (within the Country Information Travel - Domestic Travel - International Social Profile ... Accommodation Commonwealth) in 1957. In 1963 the Federation of Malaya merged with Singapore and the former British colonies of Sarawak and Sabah (North Borneo) to form Malaysia. The Prime Minister of Malaya since independence, Tunku Abdul Rahman, became Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Last updated : Aug 2005 Malaysia History Malaysia was first mentioned in Chinese and Sanskrit records of the seventh and eighth centuries. In subsequent centuries the region was under the influence and control of Thai and Indonesian empires , including the Sumatra-based civilization of Sri Vijaya.
The Majapahit Empire headquartered in Java followed this in the 14th century. Sri Vijaya and Majapahit, Buddhist and Hindu left a mark on the peninsula. By the 14th century, Islam, already well established in parts of India was steadily spreading east through the growing trade between India and Malaya. The first Muslim empire in Malaya , located at the trading port of Malacca, was formed under the rule of King Parameswara in the first part of the 15th century.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... MALAYSIA The Malay peninsula has been a commercial center since antiquity. Originally Hindu, with an Indian flavor, the region turned to Islam in the 1400s. Europeans arrived, first the Portuguese and then the Dutch (1641). Britain made its move in 1789 and eventually the Malay states became British protectorates. The British expanded mining (tin) and agriculture (rubber plantations). Because large numbers of Chinese were brought in as laborers, the balance tilted until the economy was dominated by ethnic Chinese. At the same time, Britain was also solidifying it hold on Borneo. In World War II, Japan overran Malaya and, after the war, a federation was set up to eliminate much of the confusion that exited between the Malay states. t this early 1950s period, the communist party mounted a rebellion that bedeviled the country. A home-rule government was granted in 1955 and independence in 1957 as the Federation of Malaya. Six years later, Malaysia was created which brought together Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak (though Singapore went its own way in 1965 and achieved independence then). Since independence, Malaysia has worked hard at becoming an economic center, so it was particularly hard-hit during the Asian financial crisis in 1997-1998. The two tallest buildings in the world were also erected in Kuala Lampur in the 1980s. More History

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... MALAYSIA The early Buddhist Malay kingdom of Srivijaya, based at what is now Palembang, Sumatra, dominated much of the Malay peninsula from the 9th to the 13th centuries AD. The powerful Hindu kingdom of Majapahit, based on Java, gained control of the Malay peninsula in the 14th century. Conversion of the Malays to Islam, beginning in the early 14th century, accelerated with the rise of the state of Malacca under the rule of a Muslim prince in the 15th century. Malacca was a major regional entrepot, where Chinese, Arab, Malay, and Indian merchants traded precious goods. Drawn by this rich trade, a Portuguese fleet conquered Malacca in 1511, marking the beginning of European expansion in Southeast Asia. The Dutch ousted the Portuguese from Malacca in 1641 and, in 1795, were themselves replaced by the British, who had occupied Penang in 1786.
In 1826, the British settlements of Malacca, Penang, and Singapore were combined to form the Colony of the Straits Settlements. From these strongholds, in the 19th and early 20th centuries the British established protectorates over the Malay sultanates on the peninsula. Four of these states were consolidated in 1895 as the Federated Malay States.
During British control, a well-ordered system of public administration was established, public services were extended, and large-scale rubber and tin production was developed. This control was interrupted by the Japanese invasion and occupation from 1942 to 1945 during World War II.

    History of Malaysia SETTLEMENT
In the early 17th century the Dutch established trading bases in Southeast Asia. The British role on the peninsula began in 1786 when Francis Light of the British East India Company, searching for a site for trade and a naval base, obtained the cession of the island of Pinang from the Sultan of Kedah. In 1791 the British agreed to make annual payments to the Sultan, and in 1800, the Sultan ceded Province Wellesley on the mainland. In 1819 the British founded Singapore and in 1824 they formally acquired Malacca from the Dutch. A joint administration was formed for Pinang, Malacca and Singapore, which became known as the Straits Settlements.
    BRITISH IN MALAYA
In the late 19th century, a number of events led Great Britain to play a more direct part in the affairs of the peninsula. There was conflict between Chinese settlers, who worked in the tin mines, and Malays; there were civil wars among the Malays; and there was an increase in piracy in the western part of the peninsula. Merchants asked the British to restore order.
In 1896 Perak, Selangor, Pahang and Negeri Sembilan were grouped to form The Federated Malay States, under a resident British general. Johor signed a treaty of alliance with Britain in 1885 and accepted a British adviser in 1914. British control of the four remaining Malayan states was acquired in 1909 when Siam relinquished its claims to sovereignty over Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu (with Johor we now have the Unfederated Malay States).

In the Southeast Asia region, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei are the three countries where Islam is the predominant religion. Indonesia, with 90% of its¡¦ 210 million people being Muslim, is also the largest Muslim country in the world. In Malaysia, a multiracial, multi-religious, and multi-cultural country with a population of 23 million, Malay Muslims stand at a little more than half of the population, followed by Chinese and Indians, the other two large ethnic groups, and many other minorities from various ethnic origins. Ethnicity and religion are closely related in Malaysia. In a very simplistic generalization, Malays are Muslim by constitutional definition, and people of other races are usually not; the other races are free to practice their own religion.

    Malaysia history
    Pre colonial area
Malaysia history starts in the first century AD. Two events helped stimulate Malaysia's emergence in international trade in the ancient world. At that time, India had two principal sources of gold and other metals: the Roman Empire and China. The overland route from China was cut by marauding Huns. At about the same time, the Roman Emperor Vespasian cut off shipments of gold to India. As a result, India sent large and seaworthy ships, with crews reported to have numbered in the hundreds, to Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, to seek alternative sources. The Malay Peninsula must have been of some significance. Ptolemy recorded its presence in his map as the 'Chersonesus Aureus'. In the century that followed the Malays discovered rich tin deposits. This became of great significance in Indian Ocean trade, and the region prospered. The Malays benefited from the maritime trade and the ports flourished. Malay ports served as centers for trade between these trading centers in India, South East Asia and China. The traders brought with them the Hindu-Buddhist culture which became of great influence on the local people. The early Buddhist Malay kingdom of Srivijaya, based at what is now Palembang, Sumatra, dominated much of the Malay Peninsula from the 9th to the 13th centuries AD. The powerful Hindu kingdom of Majapahit, based on Java, ruled the Malay Peninsula in the 14th century. Arrival of Muslim traders resulted in the conversion of many Malays to Islam. That process started in the beginning of the early 14th century and accelerated further with the establishment of the Sultanate of Malacca in the 15th century.

The arrival of Europeans in Malaysia brought a dramatic change to the country. In 1511, the Portuguese captured Malaka and the rulers of the Melaka Sultanate fled south to Johor where they tried to establish a new kingdom. They were resisted not only by the Europeans but by the Acehnese, Minangkabau and the Bugis, resulting in the sovereign units of the present-day states of Peninsular Malaysia. The Portuguese were in turn defeated in 1641 by the Dutch, who colonized Melaka until the advent of the British in the Dutch exerted any profound influence on Malay society. The British acquired Melaka from the Dutch in 1824 in exchange for Bencoolen in Sumatra. From their new bases in Malaka, Penang and Singapore, collectively known as the Straits settlements, the British, through their influence and power, began the process of political intergration of the Malay states of Peninsular Malaysia.
After World War II and the Japanese occupation from 1941-45, the British created the Malayan Union 1946.This was abandoned in 1948 and the Federation of Malaya emerged in its place. The Federation gained its independence from Britain on
