Forum The The Seri Malaysia Club (SMC) was founded in 1993 at the University of British Columbia , Canada, in hopes of catering to the needs of Malaysian students at UBC. It is a social and cultural club which serves as not only a support group for Malaysian students who are far away from home, but also a place where Malaysian students can get together with other Malaysians. In addition, we try to spread the word about Malaysia to educate people about the country.
We try to organize activities that revolve around Malaysian culture with a touch of local (Canadian) Malaysian flavour. It is also our mission to promote Malaysia and Malaysian culture to all the students of UBC. The largest event each year for our club is Malaysia Nite . It is held annually in January, and turnouts range from 100 to 200+ people each year. This event usually consists of a play about a Malaysian legend, and then a dinner of Malaysian food prepared by the club. University of British Columbia Seri Malaysia Club http://www.ubcsmc.cjb.net/

Villa to village: pampering and culture in Malaysia
By Lisa Abend

LISA ABEND Tanjong Jara resort, on the east coast of Malaysia, offers visits to local cultural sites, including excursions to the night market in Dungun and concerts in the evening.
Pity Captain Mok. A former officer in the Malay army, he is now the resident naturalist at the Tanjong Jara resort, and his assignment for today is to lead us upstream to an isolated village where we are to glimpse traditional Malaysian life. We are hardly impressive recruits: a former model turned Arizona socialite; two London investment bankers on their honeymoon; a party girl from New Orleans with Betty Boop curls and a perfect pedicure. The boat ride lasted 90 minutes and brought to mind nothing so much as the upriver sequence in "Apocalypse Now." It is excruciatingly, cripplingly, hot. The mayonnaise on the crustless sandwiches thoughtfully included by the resort has already curdled. We try to put a good face on things as we descend from the boat, but Captain Mok is not fooled. He knows we would rather be lounging by the pool, or basking in the hot herb scent of a Campur-Campur massage. He knows that for all the fascinating insights into Malay culture that await us, most of us are longing for the perfect slice of white sand and green water of the South China Sea back at the resort.

An Unabashedly Luxurious Weekend in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
by Judy Babcock Wylie
It was well past two o'clock in the morning after a late night flight into Kuala Lumpur's new KLIA airport when we arrived at the boutique-sized Ritz Carlton, expecting to see a sleepy doorman. Instead, as the door opened we were greeted by two employees busily scattering rose petals in our path and two others holding ceremonial gold rods bursting at one end into stylized palm fronds. Once on our floor, the strong smell of mint wafted over us. "We have drawn a soothing herb bath for you after your journey," purred the concierge with a slight bow. Welcome to Kuala Lumpur, now the best gateway to Asia, offering trendy shopping malls, a spanking new Star Wars airport and high rises sprouting on every corner. But its biggest strength is still the gentle Malaysian culture where people aim to please. It remains a place you can sit on the verandah of an old colonial hotel and sip a gin and tonic, enjoy a long Malaysian massage, or indulge in great Malay, Chinese or Indian food served from street stalls to fine restaurants. KL, as residents call it, located midway along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is a city where a mirrored skyscraper may tower over a humble Hindu temple across the street, but the jumble of architectural styles is softened by acres of greenery. The historic center is studded with Moorish fantasy-style Colonial buildings with gleaming gold domes and minarets, designed by British colonial architects.

Cultural Malaysia Cultural Malaysia is epitomised in the three cities of Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Malacca. These three different cities have each created their individual cultural indentities unique and special to itself. Their culture is a legacy of the spectacular history the cities have lived through and grown from. This is a legacy Cultural Malaysia is proud to showcase. Kuala Lumpur , literally meaning muddy confluence, has the romance of a history as a shanty mining outpost for the lucrative and turbulent tin trade of the 1800s. Today, it is a bustling metropilis and federal capital of Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur is also the centry's centre of commerce, politics, entertainment and international activities.

http://www.geographia.com/malaysia/cultures.html
Cultures have been meeting and mixing in Malaysia since the very beginning of its history. More than fifteen hundred years ago a Malay kingdom in Bujang Valley welcomed traders from China and India. With the arrival of gold and silks, Buddhism and Hinduism also came to Malaysia. A thousand years later, Arab traders arrived in Malacca and brought with them the principles and practices of Islam. By the time the Portuguese arrived in Malaysia, the empire that they encountered was more cosmopolitan than their own. Malaysia's cultural mosaic is marked by many different cultures, but several in particular have had especially lasting influence on the country. Chief among these is the ancient Malay culture, and the cultures of Malaysia's two most prominent trading partners throughout historythe Chinese, and the Indians. These three groups are joined by a dizzying array of indigenous tribes, many of which live in the forests and coastal areas of Borneo. Although each of these cultures has vigorously maintained its traditions and community structures, they have also blended together to create contemporary Malaysia's uniquely diverse heritage.
One example of the complexity with which Malaysia's immigrant populations have contributed to the nation's culture as a whole is the history of Chinese immigrants. The first Chinese to settle in the straits, primarily in and around Malacca, gradually adopted elements of Malaysian culture and intermarried with the Malaysian community. Known as

MALAYSIAN CULTURE: CULTURAL MOSAIC
by Tania Suk Yin Khoo
Professor Kong Fah Lee, John Abbott College (Autumn 2000)
The warm and hospitable people of Malaysia proudly represent a country of cultural diversity. Since the beginning of its history, cultures have been meeting and mixing to form a nation of diversity where Chinese, Malays, Indians and the indigenous tribes of Sabah and Sarawak live in cultural harmony. Each culture is very serious about maintaining their traditions but still manage to live together in harmony. Over fifteen hundred years ago, a Malay kingdom in Bujang Valley welcomed traders from India and China, and with them came the Buddhist and Hindu religions . Approximately a thousand years later, Arab traders arrived in Malacca and they brought with them the official religion of Malaysia, Islam. Malays mostly speak Bahasa Malaysian , the official language of Malaysia, as well most are practicing Muslims, as Islam is also the official religion of the country. Malays celebrate Ramadan, an important period of fasting. Boys and girls are both circumcised, and marriages are still arranged. Malaysian Chinese also speak the official language of their country, but they also speak English, Tamil, and Chinese dialects. Most Chinese practice Buddhism while others practice Taoism, some are Muslim or Christian. A very important holiday is Chinese New Year, when the whole family gets dressed up, visit family and feast.

Mew Chang Tsing And Her Vision of a New Malaysian Dance Mew Chang Tsing And Her Vision of a New Malaysian Dance With typical passion and sincerity, Mew Chanmg Tsing reveals her dreams and ambitions. by Written in August 1999 by Lucy Weldon for kulture.com.my According to dancer Mew Chang Tsing, the Malaysian arts scene is booming. But although Mew is firmly part of this new burgeoning era of performing arts, she wants to do something different. In her words, she's driven by the desire to "do something Malaysian". She admits that at one level this is not unique. Where her uniqueness lies, she believes, is her interest in multi-culturalism in dance form. A new dance company for Malaysian contemporary dance Importantly, Mew says, "if you don't understand different cultures it's very difficult to produce multi-cultural work." To achieve this, Mew knew she would need her own company. So, she formed the RiverGrass Dance Company in December 1996 so that she could "do things properly."

New plant in Malaysia !
"We will make a new electronics plant in Malaysia!" said a manager. Despite other people's skepticism due to the belief that Malaysia is only a resort area, the manager said proudly, "We will make the Malaysia project a success", and left for his new post in Malaysia. For the past eight years since then, we have built and continually refined a world-class manufacturing facility. Located in the heart of Southeast Asia, Malaysia is divided into two main regions, Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo Island. It has a multiethnic population of approximately 20 million, consisting of Malays, Chinese, Indians and etc. Islam is the country's official religion, although the constitution guarantees freedom of religion. Malaysia's industry includes manufacturing of electronic products, agriculture and forestry for rubber cultivation, and mining of tin and crude petroleum.
For one more thing, tourism is emerging as a major industry. Magazine titles such as "Malaysia, Dream Resort" have been published writing about new Malaysian resort hotels that feature Malaysian culture and wild nature.
