Culture and Arts
In the field of culture, some non-profit organizations (NPOs) exist to cater for minority interests such as playing of traditional Malay games and self-defence. These organisations are monitored by the Cultural Department of the Ministry. In the field of arts, new NPOs have emerged such as the Sarawak Music Society Online. The Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism (MCAT) manages Panggung Negara (National Theater), Istana Budaya (Cultural Center), the National Arts Academy and Museums. The MCAT and other government agencies play an important role in promoting Malaysian culture. However, there are some prominent 'for-profit' theater groups. The government and private for-profit organisations play dominant roles in the field of culture and arts. There are limited non-profit organizations promoting culture (its existence is inactive and/or dependent). There are Istana Budaya promoting all forms of theatrical arts/one-act plays, theatre staging, Dance drama, National Choir Concert, National Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Music, traditional and folk music and performance by Kumpulan Budaya Negara (the national dance troupe). There is the National Arts Academy specialising in arts and providing opportunities and formal training in the field of arts. The nonprofit sector has a minor role, and share the field with government and/or business organizations. The sector obtain finances mainly from the government and by selling goods and services.

Overview
Since the beginning of its history, Malaysia has been a meeting place for a diverse range of external cultures and religions. As a result of these external influences, a new unified but distinguished Malay culture has emerged. Contemporary Malaysia represents a unique fusion of Malay, Chinese, and Indian traditions, creating a pluralistic and multicultural nation that has its character strongly rooted in social harmony, religion and pride in its ancestral background. With such a rich cultural heritage, acquiring the relevant skills and cultural knowledge in order to conduct business in Malaysia is crucial to your success.
Following years of confrontation in search of independence, Malaysia was established in September 1963 through the union of the Independent Federation of Malay, the former British colonies of Singapore and the East Malaysian States of Sabah and Sarawak. Over the last few decades the country has evolved from a successful producer of raw materials to a multi-sector economy. Today, Malaysia offers a unique blend of old traditional culture and new technological innovations. As the Malaysian market continues to develop and prosper, it is becoming increasingly valuable for those entering into business in Malaysia to be aware of the cultural dimensions that shape the fabric of this country

MALAYSIAN CULTURE
by Natalie Gafoor
Professor Kong Fah Lee, John Abbott College (Autumn 1999)
Across the world, there are thousands of fascinating cultures to be explored. In Malaysia, three main cultures come together to form the Malaysian culture . These are Malay Chinese and Indian . Though they remain different in some traditional aspects, they are slowly becoming assimilated. All Malaysians speak the official language, Malay. Most are practicing Muslims and they observe all of the rituals that their religion entails. When the Chinese and the Indians came to Malaysia, they brought with them their traditional dances, music and literature. These are more and more influenced by the music, dances and literature of the other cultures within the country and therefore are not quite the original traditions that were brought to the country. The three main cultures of Malaysia are spread out over the peninsula. Many continue to live in rural areas where they first settled when they came to the country. Others can be found in the city, working in the administration of the country. For more information: cybrport@er.uqam.ca

Malaysia: First Glimpse of Malaysian Culture
When we walked down the ramp of the Fokker Friendship, we were slammed by a wall of heat. Once inside the tiny Kuching air terminal, we were ushered into the VIP Lounge, where all four of usmy brother, my mother, my father, and I were given baskets of orchids. They were delicate flowers, graceful wands with tiger-striped, salmon, and sky-white blossoms floating from them. In my almost 16 years, I had never seen such celestial blooms. Along with the orchids, we were handed glasses of water. The second day after our arrival, my mother took me to the market in downtown Kuching only a few minutes from our spacious, low, open house on a hillside of fragrant bushes. As we walked into the main market streeta narrow alley of cramped, open store frontsit was as though the scents of East Malaysia had entered my body and sucked up all the air. The smells of incense, greasy cooking, and animals, along with the crush of bodies and the shrieking of high-pitched Malay and Indian music mixed with Jefferson Airplane made me woozy. I grabbed my mother's arm. "Can we go back, Mom?" I spent the next 3 days in bed, habituating my body to the heat and smells of East Malaysia. I came to love the market best of many fascinating aspects of Kuching, but that first week I was truly shocked by the culture.
