It's buoyant and wealthy, and has moved towards a pluralist culture based on a vibrant and interesting fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous cultures and customs. Most visitors to Malaysia stick to the insane headlong rush of Kuala Lumpur, the colonially soothing Cameron Highlands Hill Station or the hedonistic torpor of Langkawi. However, the island of East Malaysia offers spectacular wildlife, longhouses and the awe-inspiring Mt Kinabalu. Factoid
Breeeeeezy Malay houses are designed to protect against heat and humidity. Built on stilts, with tiny holes in the walls and high peaked roofs, they encourage even the slightest breeze to move around and cool the interior.

The first Chinese to settle in the straits, primarily in and around Malacca , gradually adopted elements of Malaysian culture and intermarried with the Malaysian community and with this, a new ethnic group called babas (male) and nonyas (female) emerged. Babas and nonyas as a group are know as Peranakan . They produced a synthetic set of practices, beliefs, and arts, combining Malay and Chinese traditions in such a way as to create a new culture. edit
The People
Malay are Malaysia's largest ethnic group, accounting for over half the population and the national language. Almost all Malays are Muslims, except for some of those in East Malaysia. Traditional Malay culture can still be found in the village. The Chinese settled in Malaysia during the 19th century through trading and tin -mining. Later, some of them owned businesses that become large conglomerates in today's Malaysia. Most Chinese are

Country Info Malaysia Introduction Malaysia General Data Malaysia Maps Malaysia Culture ... Malaysia Time and Date Malaysia Culture Back to Top Malaysia reflects different cultural traditions, including those of China, India, the Middle East, Europe, and the entire Malay Archipelago. Early Malay empires absorbed Indian influences, such as Hindu epics and the Sanskrit language. The kingdom of Malacca, centered in the present-day state of Melaka, developed as an Islamic state, or sultanate, in the 1400s. Later, new cultural influences from Europe and China mixed with Hindu and Islamic traditions. A collective but distinctively Malay cultural pattern has emerged out of all these influences, with artistic expressions in literature, music, dance, and art forms.

CULTURE Malaysia is a multi-racial country with a rich cultural heritage. The base of the national culture is Malay culture, which is native to this region. Islamic values are embedded in Malay Culture.
The Malay culture emphasises values on courtesy, moderation, tolerance, harmony and cordial relations among family members, neighbours and community. As Malaysian respect each other's beliefs and faiths, cultural and religious festivals such as Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Christmas, Gawai Day and other auspicious occasions are given due importance.
One of the unique features of Malaysia is its multi-racial population which practises various religions such as Islam, Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism and Christianity. Each ethnic group has its own beliefs. Under the Federal Constitution, Islam is the official religion of Malaysia but there is freedom of worship.
The Malay Language is the national language of the country. However, the people are free to use their mother tongue and other languages. English as the second language is widely used in business.

In 1963, the Federation of Malaya merged with Singapore and the former British colonies of Sarawak and Sabah (North Borneo) to form Malaysia. Singapore seceded to become an independent state in its own right in 1965, leaving Malaysia in its present form. Tunku Abdul Rahman, who had taken over as premier of the federation in 1957, remained as Prime Minister of the newly expanded republic. He remained in office until 1970, when he was replaced by Tunku Abdul Razak. The dominant political organization was the United Malay National Organization (UMNO), which allied itself with several smaller formations to create the Barisan Nasional (NF, National Front). In 1982, the NF won the general election scheduled for that year under the new leadership of Mahathir Mohammed.

Traditional Performances Being a multi-racial state of Malays, Chinese, Indians and Thais, Kedah is naturally multi-cultural. Although Islam is the national religion, freedom of worship is guaranteed. Bahasa Malaysia is the national language. However English is widely spoken. The cultural diversity of Kedah is best reflected in its tradition, the minute details of architecture and life style. Among the local traditional songs and dances which are reflective of daily lives of the common people are Tarian Cinta Sayang, Lagu-lagu Berendoi, Wayang Kulit, etc. The Silat, which is a form of traditional Malay self-defence, is also popular in Kedah. It comes in various forms and normally performed at various occasions such as weddings and functions.
