A brief history of the SIYB Regional Programme
SIYB originated from business management training materials called "Look After Your Firm" which had been developed by the Swedish Employers' Confederation. During the late 1970's, the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) funded an ILO project which adapted these materials to suit the needs of small entrepreneurs in developing countries. This new material was named “Improve Your Business” (IYB). At the same time, the ILO developed a specific training methodology, which was based on participatory learning and with an action oriented approach. The IYB training materials and methodology together became the IYB programme.
1983: IYB is introduced to Africa
In 1983, the ILO established the IYB Regional Project Office for Eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya

MALAWI DISTRICT WATER SUPPLY PROJECT, PHASE III, MALAWI
Malawi's District Water Supply Phase III (DWS III) project is an integral part of the country's national water services development master plan, implemented by the Ministry of Water Development. Stantec were awarded the design review, supervision and construction contracts for the US$17.5 million scheme in March 2000 and the final elements are expected to be largely completed by the middle of 2004. The main part of the work involves improving access to clean drinking water, principally by the provision of additional connections and public standpipes at a number of local centres spread throughout the country. DWS III has been jointly funded by the African Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Malawi. The ADB made the majority contribution, covering 84% of the cost as an African development fund (ADF) loan, which drew to a close in December 2003, with the Government making up the remaining requirement. The project is intended to provide an adequate water supply to meet the ongoing demands of a growing population and increasing urbanisation, while also improving the reliability, efficiency and coverage of existing schemes in the process. Implemented in 13 centres across the country, the DWS III development will ultimately provide for nearly a quarter of a million people.

HISTORY OF MALAWI
Early History and Colonialism
In 1944 the protectorate's first political movement, the moderate Nyasaland African Congress, was formed, and in 1949 the government admitted the first Africans to the legislative council. In 1953 the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (linking Nyasaland, Northern Rhodesia, and Southern Rhodesia) was formed, over the strong opposition of Nyasaland's African population, who feared that the more aggressively white-oriented policies of Southern Rhodesia (see Zimbabwe) would eventually be applied to them. The Banda Regime and Modern Malawi
Banda led the country in the era of independence, first as prime minister and, after Malawi became a republic in 1966, as president; he was made president for life in 1971. He quickly alienated other leaders by governing autocratically, by allowing Europeans to retain considerable influence within the country, and by refusing to oppose white-minority rule in South Africa. Banda crushed a revolt led by Chipembere in 1965 and one led by Yatuta Chisiza in 1967.

Malawi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Republic of Malawi is a land-locked nation, in Southern Africa , although sometimes it is considered to also be situated in Eastern Africa . It is bordered by Tanzania to the north, Zambia on the north-west, and Mozambique on the east, south, and west. Lake Malawi comprises about a third of the country's territory and it is stretched through most of its eastern border. The origins for the name Malawi remains unclear; it is held to be either derived from that of southern tribes, or noting the 'glitter of the sun rising across the lake' (as seen in its flag). WOMEN IN DEVELOPMENT IN MALAWI
by Paula Rae Brody
Chitukuko Cha Amai m'Malawi (CCAM) was founded in August of 1985 to focus on the recognition of "Women in Development in Malawi". The foundation laid by the League of Malawi Women, and the ongoing stewardship of the National Commission on Women in Development (NCWID) in the Ministry of Community Services, provided the impelling stimulus for CCAM's emergence as a non-governmental organisation. CCAM was founded to directly express with a unified voice, the concerns, needs, rights and opportunities of women. CCAM's mission was to consolidate the role of women and to facilitate their full integration into development activities, including relief and charity work, while placing special emphasis on rural women, their needs and the building of self-esteem. CCAM donates food to flood victims at Phokera in Nsanje Malawi in 1985 was a single party system of government. This provided CCAM with an opportunity to take advantage of its incorporation under the League of Malawi Women, and its affiliation to the National Commission on Women in Development, to ask the best and most experienced individuals in the country to provide educational guidance to the women. Government, independent business people and donors reacted favourably to the request. The rural areas, in which ninety percent of the population resided, were encouraged to utilise this opportunity to realise their incorporation into the mainstream of development. Their needs would be identified, and decisions made at village level would be stated by grassroot leadership.
