View our Equipment Checklist Search our Site Geography and Climate The one word that could be used to describe the geography of Southern Africa would be "high". The majority of the land is dominated by the Southern Plateau with elevations between 3,000 to 5,000 feet (900 – 1,500 meters) in elevation. Around the edges of the Plateau are a series of mountains and cliffs called the Great Escarpment. This includes the highlands in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Other highlands are found in northern Malawi and northeastern Zambia. From the highlands, the land drops to the coastal lowlands of South Africa and Mozambique. Southern Africa is bordered by two of the world’s oceans, the Atlantic on the west and the Indian on the south and east.

Our department offers a broad range of regional research and teaching specialties, covering Latin America, Western and Eastern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Within the United States we have particular expertiseon the American West. This page describes some of the research done by Department Faculty members and graduate students, and has links and citations for some of our publications. Shaul Cohen’s primary regional focus is on territorial dimensions of the Israel-Palestine conflict, particularly the tactics and concepts that underpin geographic conceptions of space and place as reflected in conflicts between and within communities in Israel, the West Bank, and Jerusalem. Current work has extended his research to Northern Ireland as well. Recent publications in regional geography include: Cohen, S. E. and Frank, D. April, 2002 in press. Some History: Organizations like Lifetime Malawi are reaching out in love and hope to make a real difference in Malawi. Lifeline Malawi established its first medical outreach in the lakeshore community of Ngodzi, where there are no medical facilities, clean water or even sufficient food. After Dr. Brooks and his family arrived in Malawi (1998), he initially worked with a small staff to provide a part-time medical presence in the community. In September 2001, he opened a new eight room medical clinic on property donated by the community. Since then, the property has been developed, through donations raised in Canada, the United States, France and the United Kingdom, into a medical complex offering full-time medical and health-related services to Ngodzi and the surrounding communities. As of November 2003, two (2) full time nurses were working in the clinic and living in two (2) newly built homes, located within the complex. By summer 2004, additional medical support staff had been hired to assist the clinic in seeing up to 150 patients per day. Back to Main Page

I welcome comments from knowledgeable readers. Should you have a suggested correction, please specify the source of your information. I am most interested in information from primary sources, particularly laws and the reports of monetary authorities.
Notes So far the tables for Africa, Asia, and Australia/Pacific are finished, though they are subject to revision. "Present" refers to 2005 in the tables of monetary authorities.
Table. African countries that have had various types of monetary authorities Systems with competitive issue of the monetary base Free bankingCompetitive issue by banks of notes (paper money) and deposits with few special regulations. Fixed exchange rate with gold, silver, or a foreign currency. Lesotho (1902-21), Malawi (1894-1940), Mauritius (1813-17, 1817-24*, 1824-5, 1832-49), Namibia (1915-61), South Africa (1837-1920, 1920-1*), Swaziland (1897-1921), Zambia (1906-40), Zimbabwe (1892-1940). Besides these episodes, there was also limited competition in Mozambique (1919-42*). Botswana (1897) and Nigeria (sometime 1899-1912) had episodes of note issue by a single bank either too brief or not extensive enough to usefully classify as free banking. Free issueUnusual system with neither an exchange rate target nor centralized control of the monetary base.
