Malawi Expedition 2004
G Clarkson, S Cobb and P Dutchburn
In the summer of 2004 we, a group of three geography students from the Department of Geography at the University of Hull, went to Malawi for 5 weeks. The main purpose for this expedition was the collection of data for our dissertations. The experiences that have been gained as a result of this expedition are invaluable. It has truly been a once in a life time opportunity.
Malawi is a landlocked country, bordered by Tanzania to the north, Zambia to the west and Mozambique to the south and east. Around 20% of Malawi's surface area can be accounted for by lakes, which are the final links in the vast Great Rift Valley chain. Ancient Lake Malawi is the biggest of these lakes and, at 585km long and 80km wide with a total area of approximately 6400 km , is the third largest lake in Africa and the fourth deepest in the world.
Our projects were carried out in a village called Chembe, the largest village in Malawi. Chembe is situated on the Nankumba Peninsula, which is found at the Southern end of Lake Malawi. Chembe is one of the five enclave villages that are found in Lake Malawi National park. The main industry in Chembe is fishing, however there is a lot of agricultural activity during the wet season. The main geographical issues in the area surrounding Chembe include those of overfishing, deforestation, water quality, woodland resource use, land degradation and agroforestry, allowing a wide range of both physical and human geography projects to be carried out in the area.
