The country is dominated by Lake Malawi , the third largest lake in Africa , which runs nearly the entire length of Malawi from North to South. In fact, nearly 20% of Malawi is its great lake. The Shire River flows out of Lake Malawi at the southern end, running in to Lakes Malombe and Chirwa and finally emptying in to the great Zambezi River in Mozambique . http://www.friendsofmalawi.org/learn_about_malawi/geography/organization.html
Who We Are Mission Current Board Members Annual Report from President ... About Malawian Geography Organization Politically and geographically, Malawi is divided in to three different regions: the North, the Central, and the South. Each region has approximately nine districts, and each district has hundreds of villages. The regional capitals (Mzuzu in the North, Lilongwe in the Central, and Blantyre in the South) act as political and commercial hubs for the regions. Each of the districts in the regions are further comprised of cities, towns, and villages. There are 28 districts in Malawi, and each district has its own capital, called a BOMA. BOMAs are usually small cities, semi-urban towns or large trading centers. They are usually bustling with activity: large markets, small stores, restaurants, bus depots, hospitals and government offices are located in BOMAs, as are, frequently, schools. Oftentimes, but not always, BOMAs are accessed with paved roads as well as dirt roads and footpaths. Because BOMAs are often places with significant businesses and government offices, homes tend to be larger, often made of brick or cement, and often are more crowded together. People living in BOMAs almost always have fields outside the BOMA for their crops. Depending on the size, villages may or may not have a few small shops or a small market. Some larger villages may have weekly markets where business people will come to set up shop for the day. In more remote areas, some villagers may have a small shop with goods that have been brought in from town. Household items, such as cooking oil, powdered milk, soap, and candles might be sold here. Others may set up stands selling fresh fruit and vegetables, dried fish, beans or even rice. No matter, footpaths and dirt roads connect the villages allowing people to move about easily.

Eight rivers and hundreds of streams drain the plateaux into Lake Nyasa (Malawi). Major Cities (pop. est.); Blantyre 446,800, Lilongwe 395,500, Mzuzu 62,700 (1994). Ilala cruises Mufasa catamaran cruises The South: Geography Malawi is land-locked, bound by Tanzania in the north, Zambia in the west and Mozambique to the east and south. The entire country covers an area of just 118,000 sq.km, making it slightly smaller than England. It is just over a 1,000km long and about 200km wide at its widest point. Lakes account for around 20% of the total surface area; these ancient bodies of water are the final, southernmost links in the vast Great Rift Valley chain. The smaller lakes of the south include Malombe, Chiuta and Chilwa. But they are dwarfed by Lake Malawi which, at 585 km long and 80km wide, is the third largest lake in Africa, as well as the fourth deepest in the world. The only river flowing out of Lake Malawi is the mighty Shire which meanders south through humid lowlands and over the foaming cataracts which frustrated even Livingstone's exploratory zeal, towards an ultimate rendezvous with the Zambezi. Close to Nsanje, the Shire descends to Malawi's lowest point 38m above sea level.
