Malawi is one of the smaller African Nations, landlocked in the heart of east-central Africa and is one-fifth water. Dominated by the Rift Valley, the country includes an extensive area of high interior plateaus with steep escarpments, found to be plunging in places into the waters of Lake Malawi. The Lake environment offers the opportunity to forget about the hurried passing of time, as it is still relatively untouched by the modern world. Things to do
Scuba-diving The lake conditions are generally very calm with water temperatures between 22-27degrees Celcius and visibilities up to 30 m during most of the year. It is estimated that there are over 500 fish species from 10 families with cichlids as the dominant species. Most cichlids have a remarkable breeding trait, the female carry their eggs and fry in their mouth until the young are ready and able to look after their own needs. No wonder that Lake Malawi is sometimes referred to as

BBC News, Lilongwe
Work has begun on a new mausoleum for Malawi's autocratic first president, Hastings Kamuzu Banda, but some feel the money would be better used buying food.
The mausoleum is on course to be ready in November Harvests in one of the world's poorest countries have been poor once more. The idea of building a mausoleum has been around for many years but construction only started following last year's election victory of President Bingu wa Mutharika. Banda, the self-styled "president-for-life" ruled the country with an iron fist for three decades, but was finally beaten at the ballot box in 1994 in the country's first multi-party elections. After his death three years later, he was buried in a humble grave. The multi-million dollar mausoleum is expected to have, among other things, a library, a dancing arena, a viewing bay for Banda's remains and a research centre where people can find out information about Malawi's history.

in partnership with Read the full article with a Free Trial of HighBeam Research The case of Malawi shows that while legal reform, transition to political pluralism, and adoption of the language of international human rights may facilitate the formation of a constitution that guarantees and respects all people's human rights, a cultural discourse that presents contradictions and ironies regarding women's status may limit the extent to which these processes are translated into automatic and predictable gains for women. Precolonial gender roles and historical processes in the colonial and postcolonial period have resulted in a fluidity with which the concept of ...

CULTURE-MALAWI: Young Women Leaders Rise Up To Challenges Inter Press Service - July 9, 2003
Frank Phiri BLANTYRE, 9 Jul (IPS) Faced with high prevalence of HIV/AIDS infection, environmental degradation and sluggish economic growth, young women professionals in Malawi have put their heads together and intensified efforts to bring about a major paradigm shift. The women, under a grouping called the Young Women Leaders Network (YWLN), want to put fellow women in the fore of developing this impoverished southern African state of 10 million people, of which women make up 50 percent. The young women professionals say they draw their inspiration from the various socio-economic and development woes that afflict the country resulting in women becoming the most vulnerable group. "We realised that all our problems were similar and sought to form a common front to confront these problems," Evelyn Mwapasa, chairperson of YWLN told IPS in the commercial capital, Blantyre. True to Mwapasa's assertions, Malawi's demographics are not positive. Various local and international institutions, among them the World Bank, place 65 per cent of the total Malawi population to be living below the one United States dollar a day threshold.

Norway is a young nation with a long history, especially as a maritime nation. In spite of being joined to Denmark for 400 years, Norway retained a strong cultural tradition of its own, which, together with cultural impulses from abroad, produced its own unique diversity. This can be seen not only in museums and galleries, but also in the landscape. In addition to its music, literature and art, Norwegian culture is evident in the traditional national costumes, or bunads, which are worn with pride on special occasions such as weddings, christenings and of course on 17 May, the Norwegian national day. The Saami are the indigenous people of Norway and are today a minority group. They have their own parliament and live mainly in the county of Finnmark in northern Norway. The Saami people traditionally make their living from reindeer herding, hunting and fishing. They are proud of their heritage and produce beautiful arts and crafts. News - Africa In Internet Nordiska Afrikainstitutet «Increasingly senile» Ex-President Hastings Banda afrol News, 19 November - Leading scholars have united to publish a new review of Malawi's short and troubled history of multi-party democracy. They find a true transformation since the Banda dictatorship, but they also warn that "intimidation and tolerance, old and new, exist side by side in Malawi's political pluralism." Editor Harri Englund asks the question: "Is there a culture of politics beyond mere greed?" in the introduction of the just released book, 'A Democracy of Chameleons - Politics and Culture in the New Malawi'. While some chapters underline the new freedoms and the political will to solve the country's profound structural problems, others focus on the maintainace of structures and persons from the defeated dictatorship. There are no clear answers. This 187-pages review of Malawi's recent history is published by the Nordic Africa Institute, edited by Finnish researcher Harri Englund. A new generation of scholars, most of them Malawians, cover a large range of issues causing debate in the so-called 'New Malawi'. The origin of the book can be traced to the International Conference on Historical and Social Science Research in Malawi, held at Chancellor College in Zomba in June 2000.
