Who We Are Mission Current Board Members Annual Report from President ... Learn About Malawi About Malawian Culture The first thing to keep in mind when learning about Malawian culture is that, as in America , there is no single Malawian culture. Malawi is made up of many diverse tribes, and those tribes vary considerably in their beliefs, music, dance, customs, even in the ways they build their houses. By boiling down our presentation to the bare essentials (in the interest of not confusing or overwhelming you), we are losing a lot of the richness in Malawi 's many cultural heritages. What follows is an attempt to acclimate a first-time visitor to some of the more noticeable customs they will find in Malawi . Please "feel free" (a traditional Malawian invitation) to browse the following topics:

Who We Are Mission Current Board Members Annual Report from President ... About Malawian Culture Religion Conflict between Christians and Muslims is rare in Malawi ; when it does erupt, as occurred in mid-2003, it is usually politically motivated. Political affiliation, religious persuasion, and tribal identity are closely bound together in Malawi , and mosques are one of the most visible elements of that identity. Outside of election time, relations between Christianity and Islam are quite calm. Malawians are generally tolerant of the three Old Testament religions, and tend to be more concerned about whether or not a person actively worships a god than what form that worship takes. Malawi is a poor country. The population in 1996 was estimated at about 10 million although this may still have included a very substantial number of refugees from the war in Mozambique, whom Malawi hosted in those troubled times.

Blantyre - Culture M alawi's largest city, Blantyre is situated in the Southern Region and includes the two communities of Blantyre and Limbe which are joined by an eight kilometre stretch of highway. Blantyre, Malawi's oldest municipality is the country's main commercial, industrial and communications hub and is set in the Shire Highlands. The city is surrounded by some of the most beautiful hills and mountains in Malawi. A typical view from a city street could include Michiru, the rain mountain, a glimpse of Mount Soche or a passing glance of Ndirande, sleeping man mountain, looming behind a suburb. The hills which surround the City are in fact the first layer of an echo of hills which stretch to the Kirk Range, the Zomba Plateau and Mount Mulanje. Blantyre's hills all have something special to offer. Most have patches of evergreen forest, wild orchids, aloes and numerous birds and always incredible views. Perhaps the most interesting is Michiru with its Mountain Conservation Area. The Michiru Mountain is in fact an ongoing experiment in conservation where emphasis is placed on demonstrating wise land use. The Conservation Area has been divided into three sections, a forestry reserve, farming area and nature reserve for the improvement of natural resources. Visitors to the area can drive to the summit to enjoy spectacular views of Blantyre itself, Zomba, Mulanje and the Shire Valley.

Malawi Culture The African peoples in Malawi are all of Bantu origin. The main ethnic groups ('tribes') are the Chewa, dominant in the central and southern parts of the country; the Yao, also found in the south; and the Tumbuka in the north. There are very small populations of Asian and European people living mainly in the cities. The different ethnic groups in Malawi each have their own language or dialect. The Chewa are the dominant group and their language, called Chewa or Chichewa, is the common national tongue widely used throughout the country. English is the official language and is very widely spoken, particularly in main towns, but sometimes also in remote rural areas. Of the other languages spoken in Malawi, Tumbuka is spoken by about 500,000 people in the north, and Yao is spoken by about 600,000 people in the south. Most people in Malawi are Christian, usually members of one of the Protestant churches founded by missionaries in the late 19th century. There are Muslims in the north, especially along Lake Malawi - a legacy of the Arab slave traders who operated in this area. Alongside the established religions, many Malawians also hold traditional animist beliefs.

http://web.mit.edu/africantech/www/articles/Lake_Malawi.html
Preserving the Future for Lake Malawi
Joshua Nyambose* Overfishing and increased economic activity are depleting the fish stock in Lake Malawi, Africa's third largest lake. Between 1988 and 1992, the commercial fish catch fell by over 20 percent. This problem has major economic and environmental consequences for the future of Malawi and other countries around the lake. Bordered by Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique, Lake Malawi covers a total area of 22,490 square kilometers. The lakeshore people, particularly those in landlocked Malawi, rely on the lake for water, transport, recreation, electricity, irrigation, and most importantly, fish. But pollution and overfishing now threaten this valuable resource, resulting in environmental degradation through the loss of species in the Lake. It is only by implementing concerted policy measures that this degradation can be reversed. Possible solutions for consideration are population control measures, education and training, appropriate fish management techniques, both domestically and internationally, and poverty reduction through economic and social development.
Contributing Factors
The environmental degradation of Lake Malawi can be attributed to four factors: high population growth rates, the economic value of the lake, the Malawian lake-shore culture, and the continued harvesting of large quantities of fish.
