Getting "In Step" With Malawi's People
    by Jeff Adkins
I looked over my letters home to my wife and kids during my time in Malawi to pull my thoughts together, so that when you come to this website, you'll have some sense of why we go to Malawi (and why you might want to consider serving), and what we saw and did. At work or with friends, I might not have a lot of time to discuss my experience, and might encapsulate those three weeks as "I helped Malawians install and dedicate water wells in rural villages". But it was three weeks of hard work, challenges, discouragement and exhilaration, and a flood of new experiences. In my letters, I gave my family a "top 20" of things I hoped to never forget about my time in Malawi - here are a few of my impressions:
Jeff Adkins I took part in the installation and dedication of around 75 shallow wells in rural northern Malawi villages. Sun-up to sundown, six days a week, we drove pickups filled with "downhole parts" - the PVC and steel makings of the pumps into the wells constructed in the participating villages. We were led by a Malawian field officer and assisted by trained maintenance workers who lived in the area we were serving.
A well might serve anywhere from 50 to 500 people. The villagers are an active part in every stage of well construction - digging the well, making the bricks that line the well, making the concrete apron and slab, installing the pump and maintaining the well and pump in working order. They pay an annual maintenance fee to keep a stock of replacement parts. This is no free ride, but a cooperative work between US Christians and the people of that village that will save lives and make people healthier.

These grass roots, village-level HIV/AIDS prevention programs give education to high risk groups about the disease, modify sexual behavior, promote voluntary counseling and testing for HIV, foster the social and economic empowerment of women, care for orphans due to AIDS epidemic, provide home-based care of ill persons, improve nutrition, and reverse the stigmatization of people with AIDS. In partnership with other non-governmental organizations, we have produced 8 such conferences in Tanzania, Mozambique, Kenya, and Malawi in Africa. As leaders develop new education projects and prevention programs and identify successful existing ones, GAIA works to secure funding for these through small grants and through assisting them with applications to other funding sources when appropriate. Below is a sampling of the kind of HIV/AIDS projects with which we work.
Youth HIV Prevention Education Programs More than half of population in Malawi is under 15. Helping uninfected youth stay uninfected is critical to stemming the HIV/AIDS epidemic and to economic development and social progress in Malawi. Moreover, education for youth compassion for those who are infected reduces the stigma associated with HIV epidemic.

Malawi is a landlocked country located in southeastern Africa. It is bordered in the North and East by Tanzania, on the east, south and southwest by Mozambique and to the west by Zambia.
The country lies within the Great African Rift Valley system. Lake Malawi, a body of water some 360 miles long and about 1,500 ft above sea level, is its most prominent physical feature. Much of the land surface is plateau between 900 to 1,220 m (3,000 to 4,000 ft) above sea level. Elevations rise of over 2,440 m (8,000 ft) in the Nyika Plateau in the north and in the regions of Mt. Mulanje 3,050 m (10,000 ft) and Mt. Zomba 2,135 m (7,000 ft). The Shire highlands in the south are lower with elevations from 610 m (2,000 ft) to 900 m (3,000 ft).

The Republic of Malawi is a land-locked nation, in Southern Africa , although sometimes it is considered to also be situated in Eastern Africa . It is bordered by Tanzania to the north, Zambia on the north-west, and Mozambique on the east, south, and west. Lake Malawi comprises about a third of the country's territory and it is stretched through most of its eastern border. The origins for the name Malawi remains unclear; it is held to be either derived from that of southern tribes, or noting the 'glitter of the sun rising across the lake' (as seen in its flag). Tea-drinking is popular in Malawi. The Malawians drink it black and sweetened with sugar to improve the taste of the bread they habitually dunk in it. There's also a large Asian population who take tea the Indian way: water, tea bags, milk, and sugar all brewed together in the pot.
