Country Info Malawi Introduction Malawi General Data Malawi Maps Malawi Culture ... Malawi Time and Date Malawi Culture Back to Top Though under the impact of modernization, Malawi's orthodox culture is characterized by continuity as well as change, and the orthodox life of the village has remained largely intact. One of the most typical features of Malawi culture is the enormous mixture of orthodox songs and dances that use the drum as the major musical instrument. Among the most famous of these dances are ingoma and gule wa mkulu for men and chimtali and visekese for women. There are various orthodox arts and crafts, including sculpture in wood and ivory. There are two museums—the Museum of Malawi in Blantyre and a smaller one in Mangochi. While various cultural activities are organized by the Ministry of Youth and Culture, the University of Malawi Travelling Theatre, and other groups in Blantyre, the radio from Zomba and Lilongwe has proved to be the most effective means of bringing orthodox and modern plays to the rural population.

The aging Banda and his chief henchman, the much-hated and feared John Tembo, were put on trial for their alleged role in the 1983 murders of four opposition politicians. They were acquitted in December 1995, although investigations into various financial misdemeanours continued. The prosecution of Banda ended with his death in November 1997 but Tembo was eventually convicted in September 2003.
Muluzi won a second term in office at the presidential election of June 1999, defeating his main opponent, Malawi Congress Party leader Gwanda Chakwanda, and taking 52 per cent of the poll. Simultaneous elections for the National Assembly gave the UDF 93 seats, just short of an absolute majority but enabling it to rule in alliance with the support of smaller parties and non-partisan elements. Despite expectations that Muluzi would alter the constitution in order to stand for a third term, he stood down at the elections in mid-2004. His successor is Bingu Wa Mutharika, also of the UDF - but his party failed to gain a majority in parliament. Forced into a coalition with opposition parties, the direction of the new government has yet to be revealed.
Abroad, Malawi has aligned itself with the post-liberation government in South Africa, the main political and economic force in the region. Domestically, the HIV/AIDS pandemic has been the dominant issue: in common with other governments in the region, the Malawians often seem overwhelmed by the scale of the problem. Malawi is one of the worst affected countries with an estimated one million people (just under 10 per cent of the total population) living with HIV/AIDS infection. Traditionally a very conservative society, strongly influenced by Scottish missionaries during the colonial era, Malawi has found it hard to come to terms with its plight.

1.1 GENERAL
The Malawi Government has adopted Poverty Alleviation as the central policy for national development. The strategy aims at reducing and, eventually, eliminating, poverty in Malawi. This strategy is enshrined in the Poverty Alleviation Programme (PAP) and the recently launched Vision 2020. It has been established that a great proportion of those affected by poverty are women. Generally it is also established that women's poverty is exacerbated by their lack of access to the productive resources of land, income, credit, appropriate technologies and information. The UN Joint Gender Policy Statement is a conscious way of addressing the existing gender imbalance, recognising the potential of women and legitimising their contribution to national development.
1.2 CURRENT SITUATION OF WOMEN AND GENDER IN MALAWI Previous analyses on the social situation of women in Malawi have revealed that women are seriously disadvantaged in almost every sector of development.

They are extremely courteous, and respectful of their elders. There are a few cultural customs and gestures that should be remembered when visiting Malawi: It is a sign of respect to bow slightly when greeting someone. When a man enters a room he is expected to shake the hands of all the other men in the room before getting into a conversation with any of them. It is important to greet people with a “How are you?” before saying a simple, “Good morning.” And women never call men by their first name. Many Malawians go by two or three different names. It is considered risqu© to kiss or hug in public, and it is not uncommon to see people of the same sex holding hands. It is a sign of a close friendship. You will rarely see people holding hands with the opposite sex in public.

We want to communicate malawi culture, social life and customs.” Both want to exchange pedagogical and methodological practices.
http://www.nord-osterdal.vgs.no/Docs/00000271.html
Noah Chirwa og Andrew Nchessie from Malawi arrived at Tynset just before Easter. They are going to stay for one year and have already coped with the transition from African warmth to the cold winter in Østerdalen in an excellent way.  I met them on their first day at Tynset  Secondary School – O-level (Tynset Ungdomsskole). They have a sense of humour which is catchy and they are eager to get started with their teaching and getting into contact with the pupils. They have spent their first days at Tynset getting acquainted with the schools. They are going to teach both on O-levels (Tynset Ungdomsskole) and at the comprehensive school here (Nord-Østerdal videregående skole). They are both pleased with a quiet start, where they have been introduced to the school system and Norwegian culture before they start teaching in class. They say that the Norwegian language is a challenge, but they are both very comfortable with speaking English. After having tasted Norwegian food they focused on learning the Norwegian names for the various dishes, dishes they liked very much by the way. Noah and Andrew in the staff room at “Tynset Ungdomsskole” Andrew visiting the mechanics branch at “Siva” Andrew Nchessie is from Baleka, an eight-hour trip from Kasungu, where he is employed at the Kasungu Teachers’ Training College. He is married to Jean and they have a four-year-old son. He teaches many different subjects, but his great interest is science, where he is in constant search of ways to present scientific themes in a topical and popular way for the students. To use imagination and creativity in the laboratory is important to Andrew. – “I focus on how to use science to solve problems in the world”, he says, “especially problems like pollution and deforestation
