Tuesday, October 19, 2004 Two incumbents, three ex-councilors join crowded field
By MARK PETERS, Portland Press Herald Writer E-mail this story to a friend
South Portland has a crowded race for City Council this fall. Seven residents are running for two at-large council seats. The field includes incumbent councilors Robert Fickett and Linda Boudreau, as well as three former councilors and two residents who have not held elective office before. Voters have the opposite in the School Board races, which are uncontested. Incumbent Steven Onos is running unopposed in District 2, and Richard Carter has no challenger in District 1, which is an open seat. John McQuinn, the current board member in District 1, is not running for re-election. Voters also will decide on two ballot questions. The first is a charter amendment that could boost a legal challenge city officials are considering if a proposed 1 percent cap on property taxes passes statewide, but fails in South Portland. The second question would require the mayor to read a statement each Memorial Day addressing Sept. 11 and South Portland residents serving in Iraq. It also would require the city to send this statement to local troops who are serving in Iraq or fighting terrorism. THE CANDIDATES NAME: Ralph C. Baxter Sr.
