Parent, School, Health and Environmental Groups Call for Bill to Remove Poisons from Maine Schools February 9, 2005 Surrounded by photographs of poisonous chemicals found in Maine schools, a coalition of Maine parent, school, health and environmental groups joined legislators at the Statehouse today to urge passage of a bill to fund the removal of toxic, flammable and explosive hazards from schools. The bill, An Act To Protect Children from Toxic Chemicals in Schools, sponsored by Rep. Theodore Koffman would enable state experts to help schools, at their request, to safely remove a range of dangerous chemicals that have been found stockpiled in Maine schools. Funding for the measure would come from a 30 cent fee on wholesale suppliers on sales of lawn and garden pesticide containers. The DEP’s pilot program to clean out toxic chemicals in schools was cut short due to lack of funding after only 18% of Maine schools had been cleaned up. As a result of this pilot program, 6,500 pounds of hazardous waste including more than 700 pounds of mercury were removed from science labs, maintenance departments, art and vocational classrooms, and nurses’ stations in 80 Maine schools.

EPA NEW ENGLAND ADMINISTRATOR ANNOUNCES CHILDREN FIRST CAMPAIGN IN MAINE
Contact: Alice Kaufman, EPA Community Affairs Office (617) 918-1064 For Immediate Release: October 3, 2000; Release # 00-10-08 PORTLAND, Maine – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's New England Office today announced a $1 million initiative aimed at protecting children from environmental health threats in the places where they spend most of their time - in school, at home, and outdoors. With the Fred P. Hall, Jr. School as a backdrop, EPA challenged Maine schools to join the agency's Showcase School program to demonstrate the numerous EPA programs available to make schools safer and healthier for children. The initiative, called Children First, includes $500,000 of new investments to combat lead poisoning in New England cities, $200,000 to improve air quality and reduce toxic exposure at 200 schools, and $225,000 in programs to curb skyrocketing asthma rates. "At a time of unparalleled national prosperity, it is unacceptable that thousands of children in New England are still afflicted by lead poisoning, mercury poisoning and bouts with asthma," said Mindy S. Lubber, EPA New England regional administrator, who is holding events like this one in each New England state this fall to announce the children's health initiative.

Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.
