Elija Parish Lovejoy (Class of 1826), perhaps Colby's most well known graduate, is remembered as the first martyr for a free press in the US; he was killed in 1837 by an angry mob while defending the anti-slavery newspaper he published in Alton, IL. Few recall, however, that Lovejoy began his career as an educator, first as the principal of his old school, China Academy in China, ME, and then as a schoolteacher in St. Louis. His introduction to newspaper work was a part-time job on the St. Louis Times, a job he pursued while working full-time as a teacher. Fewer still recall that Lovejoy came to what was then Waterville College in the first place only at the encouragement of Henry Stanwood, who assumed the principalship of China Academy in 1822, upon his graduation from the College. A close attachment quickly developed between teacher and pupil, and Stanwood persuaded Lovejoy to prepare to attend Waterville College (rather than Bowdoin, Williams, or Dartmouth) in the fall of 1823.
Colby is also proud to be the first previously all-male small college in New England to admit women. The first woman to graduate from Colby was Mary Low, who entered Colby in 1871 and graduated in 1875. During her career she became an expert in library science, made the first systematic catalogue of the Maine State Library, and was a frequent contributor to library journals. The second woman graduate, Louise Coburn, Class of 1877, also pursued a career as an educator and a scholar. She wrote many articles and poems, and is best remembered as the author of

    Troop To Teachers
A referral assistance and placement service for military personnel interested in beginning a second career in public education as a teacher. The program helps applicants identify teacher certification requirements, programs leading to certification and employment opportunities.
Background: President Bush signed legislation authorizing the continuation of Troops to Teachers into law on 8 January 2002. Congress also appropriated $18 million to provide financial assistance to help eligible individuals pay for teacher certification programs or to accept employment as a teacher in a "high needs" school.
One of the most significant changes to the eligibility criteria is extending Financial Assistance to members of the National Guard or Reserve with at least 10 years of service who agree to an additional three years of reserve service. Other eligibility categories for financial assistance are outlined below.
Referral and Placement Assistance services are extended to those who may not meet eligibility for financial assistance but are members of the Reserve service on or after 8 January 2002. These services include a network of state placement assistance offices that provide information regarding certification requirements, programs leading to certification, and assistance in identifying teaching positions. An Internet Teacher Job Referral service has been established that allows school district administrators to post job vacancies and search the Troops to Teachers database for potential teacher candidates. Anyone may use this site to search for job vacancies. Individuals registered with Troops to Teachers may post a mini-resume to highlight their background and experiences.

North Carolina Licensure: Questions and Answers Who needs a license in North Carolina? All professional employees of public schools must hold a license for the subject or grade level they teach or for the professional assignment they hold. In what areas are licenses issued? Teaching areas encompass birth through kindergarten, elementary (K-6), middle grades (6-9), secondary grades (9-12), special subjects (K-12), exceptional children (K-12), and vocational education. (See the complete list of individual areas below.) How do I qualify for a North Carolina license? The standard basis for license is the completion of an approved education program at an accredited college or university. Must out-of-state applicants qualify through reciprocity plans that allow educators from outside North Carolina to establish eligibility for licensing in North Carolina, North Carolina recognizes four teacher education and reciprocal licensing approaches: completion of an education program accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) completion of an education program that follows National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) standards reciprocity based on interstate agreements (North Carolina has reciprocal contracts with Alabama, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.)

B-8: Extended Teacher Education Program (ETEP)
    History
ETEP has two distinct but related levels. The first level features an undergraduate degree, with a major in the arts and sciences, or an undergraduate degree with at least 60 credit hours in liberal arts courses. Eligible USM undergraduates may choose an 18-credit hour minor in educational studies. The second level offers a graduate program in education, which combines teacher certification with opportunities for continued studies culminating in a master?s degree. The initial phase of the graduate program, the internship year, includes the professional education coursework and field experiences needed to qualify prospective teachers for certification in the state of Maine. Upon successful completion of the internship year and meeting criteria for continued study, students have the option of completing a master?s of science in education degree.
    The Internship Year
The internship phase of ETEP consists of 33 to 36 credits of graduate coursework. Applicants are accepted as interns at the elementary, middle or secondary levels. Middle and secondary level interns may teach English, foreign languages, mathematics, physical and/or life sciences, or social studies.

a division of Home School Legal Defense Association December 17, 1999 The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards: National Teacher Certification in the Works By Caleb Kershner Teachers unions are the most powerful and influential lobbying group in 43 of the 50 states. Home schoolers present a major threat to these unions because children leaving public schools decrease the schools budget which means less money to pay and hire teachers. Consequently, teachers unions actively target home schoolers. Just this year, the National Education Association (NEA) passed a resolution calling for mandated teacher certification for home school parents. In a recent study conducted by the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation, Danielle Dunn Wilcox explores the NBPTS. The following is a summary of this study. The NBPTS began in 1987 as a private organization with the purpose of certifying master teachers in various subject areas for different age levels. The Board consists of 63 members. Key provisions of its bylaws require that a majority of the board be active teachers. Fourteen board members must be NEA/AFT leaders.
