    General MOFGA Introduction:
Founded in 1971, MOFGA has grown from a loose affiliation of farmers and gardeners committed to growing healthy, chemical free food, to an internationally recognized advocate for food production that enhances and protects the ecological as well as economic vitality of rural communities. MOFGA's Mission statement: The mission of the association is to help farmers and gardeners grow organic food, to protect the environment, and to recycle natural resources; to increase local food production, to support rural communities, and to encourage sustainable farm economies; and to illuminate for consumers the connections between healthful food, environmentally sound farming practices, and vital local economies. While the group's key constituency consists of farmers and gardeners, the organization helps food producers of all kinds adopt organic practices. One of the oldest and largest organic organizations in the country, MOFGA has 4,000 individual, family and business members and possesses extensive education, research and policy experience on a complete range of organic as well as non-organic farming and gardening issues.
The Common Ground For many years MOFGA dreamed of creating a place that could serve as a permanent site for the Common Ground Country Fair as well as a living classroom and demonstration center for today's and tomorrow's farmers, gardeners and consumers. Thanks to the generosity, hard work and creative dedication of countless individuals and institutions, this dream has come true.

"A network is nonhierarchical. It is a web of connections among equals. What holds it together is not force, obligation, material incentive, or social contract but SHARED VALUES and the understanding that some tasks can be accomplished together that could never be accomplished separately. One of the important purposes of a network is simply to remind its members that they are not alone° Beyond Limits,

    Rodale Organic School Garden Contest
The Rodale Institute has launched its 4th annual national Organic School Garden Contest, open to K-12 schools and giving awards and cash prizes of $1000 (1 st. ) $500 (2nd.) & $250 (3rd.). "The goal is to help kids make better choices for themselves by exploring the connections between food & health, in a fun, hands-on and ultimately thought provoking way," says Florence Rodale. "One way we achieve this is by encouraging children nationwide to show us how their organic school garden has impacted their nutrition, health and daily lives in general. We want to become partners in education with parents and teachers," she says.

LAYOUT Flexibility in design is essential to allow a multiplicity of activities and to accommodate future curriculum and technological changes. The design should simplify supervision while recognizing efficient flow of traffic, to minimize disturbances. Control of exits is particularly important; the minimum number of exits required for safety and smooth traffic flow is recommended. Efficient design enables effective delivery of the program

        • Supervision/Visibility
        • Traffic flow
        • Flexibility
        • Exit control
ACOUSTICS Acoustical treatments are a vital element in any library media facility design. These treatments are used within the facility as a deterrent to an accumulation of noise factors (from patrons, equipment, fans), and as insulation from external noise factors (cafeteria, lobby and music areas.) To protect from ambient noise, as well as fans, equipment, and bells, consideration should be given to treatments in any area where audio-visual recordings will be taking place. Conference rooms, work and instructional areas should be soundproofed from the main facility.
          CONSIDERATIONS:
          • Acoustical treatments in all areas
The colors of the walls, fabrics, carpeting, other flooring, wood stain, paint and furniture should work together creating a unified look, so the facility is visually appealing and has a welcoming environment. It is the visual appeal of the facility that will add to its success.

Summary Maine has been paying for students to attend private schools since colonial times. A century ago, the state enacted the town "tuitioning" law that still serves students today. Under the law, school districts without public schools allow students to attend nonsectarian private or public schools in other districts.

Exciting news from the Maine Student Book Award committee ! In the decade since this project was initiated, more and more young participants across Maine are expanding their reading horizons. If you work with Maine students in fourth through eighth grade, there's no time like the present to encourage them to join in the fun. Here's a quick overview of how it works: SPRING: The MSBA Book List for the upcoming school year is available on-line (usually by April 1) and distributed at statewide conferences. Participating schools/groups add up their votes and submit their MSBA ballots for the statewide tally. The students' top choice from the previous year's reading list is announced at Reading Round-Up, as well as on the Me-Libs listserv and via postcard to those schools and groups who participated in the voting. We encourage you to reward students' year-round reading with some sort of event or celebration - a cooperative display project; an ice-cream party; student skits or readings; or other activities. Consider using MSBA bookmarks, T-shirts and totes. Use your imagination (and let us know of your successful events!) SUMMER: As you order new books, consult the
