    General Information
Penobscot School is a small non-profit language school in Rockland, Maine. We offer courses in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Spanish and other language to adults and children in our community. Participants in these courses take a special interest in meeting and helping the students who come from around the world for the Summer English Program. Rockland, Maine, is a fishing port of 8,000 inhabitants in a part of the New England coast that is famous as a summer resort. The school is a short walk from museums, shops, and restaurants, and is close to boating, swimming, fishing, golf, tennis, and shore and forest nature walks. The area has a lively cultural scene in the summer and is home to numerous art galleries, a museum of automobiles and airplanes, as well as schools of photography, wilderness survival and boatbuilding. The goal of the Summer English Program is maximum English acquisition. We believe that students learn best when relaxed, comfortable, and highly interested in the subject. The human brain is designed for language learning and with proper stimulation can make extremely rapid progress. The course provides a rich bath of language which the students absorb through listening and active participation.

    Vindicating the Supreme Court:
Fighting for Parental Liberty by Stopping Religious Discrimination In the nation's first school choice lawsuit filed after the U.S. Supreme Court victory for choice parents, the Institute for Justice (IJ) is returning to Maine to vindicate the promise of school choice and to fight government discrimination against religion. On September 18, 2002, the Institute for Justice filed suit in Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland, Maine, seeking to overturn a 1981 state law that banned religious school options from Maine's nearly 100-year-old school choice program. In Maine, every school district has a legal duty to provide an education for its residents through the 12th grade. About half of Maine's school districts, usually because of their rural nature, have too few students to warrant maintaining schools that go from kindergarten through the 12th grade. Maine developed a common-sense solution to ensure that towns with small populations can offer an education to all of their children. Parents in Maine who live in towns without public schools have the right to select the school that best suits their children's educational needs.

    Laptop program seems secure, successful
Nearly 17,000 of Maine's seventh-graders got new laptop computers in September 2002. Students and teachers at nine demonstration schools received nearly 700 laptops in the spring of 2002; more than 1,600 eighth-graders are due to get laptops in the fall of 2003. However, the Legislature, facing a budget shortfall, may yet reduce funding for the program. With studies showing that the laptops are having a positive effect for both students and teachers, the Legislature's Education Committee left the program intact in March 2003 but plans to review it again next year. In this special section produced by MaineToday.com and the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, you can read the latest news about the laptop program, look at a timeline , vote in our poll , participate in an online discussion and find related links for more information.
