Advanced Pottery Paper/Project Introduction Task Process Evaluation ... Credits A WebQuest for Advanced Pottery Designed by Mr. Lofving
ilofving@msad54.k12.me.us Introduction: Pottery is a huge subject. People have been working in clay from the beginning. A clay sculpture of a bison was found molded on the walls of a cave in France and dated to 40,000 years ago. Since then people have figured out a lot of different ways of working with clay. You should be able to find an area that interests you. The object of this webquest is to help you to find information that you can use in your Advanced Pottery paper or presentation. By using this website, you will see some of the possibilities for presentation, get some links to ceramic sites, learn how your project is scored and be reminded of the rules outlined in the school's Acceptable Use Policy.
The Task: Your task is to investigate an artist or a medium that relates to pottery and ceramics, and turn your research into a multimedia presentation, or a paper that includes something about the history of the artist or medium. First you will find information on a medium (majolica, redware, mosaics) or a ceramic artist (Maria Martinez, Robert Arneson). Dig around and find some cool stuff. Next you will want to start to produce a project. Include your insights in the process. Feel free to be creative. (This is an art class) A review of an artist's work with you as the critic, A day in the life of an artist or a walk through a process from start to finish are some examples. You can also turn in a pot or sculpture done in the style of the artist or the medium you have studied for another pottery grade. The paper or presentation is required for all Advanced Pottery students.

Sports Done Right Charts New Course for Interscholastic Athletics
ORONO, Maine –– A highly anticipated report for improving middle school and high school sports in Maine and across the nation was unveiled today by a Select Panel of citizens charged with examining and defining healthy interscholastic sports and presenting recommendations to shape the best possible learning environment for student-athletes. Sports Done Right: A Call to Action on Behalf of Maine’s Student-Athletes is centered around seven core principles and supporting core practices that describe what healthy sports programs look like. Also highlighting the report are “Out-of-Bounds” items that red flag troubling trends, negative behaviors and attitudes, and policies that should be eliminated. Approximately 300 school administrators and policymakers, sports leaders and student-athletes attended the rollout of the report held at the Augusta Civic Center in the state’s capital city. Even in Maine, the report points out, schools and communities struggle with issues so often reflected in the national media such as fans harassing officials, coaches and student-athletes, coaches’ thoughtless handling of their young charges, and the spectacle of out-of-control parents and fans. Most superintendents and school boards find themselves embroiled in a sports-related controversy each year, requiring tremendous amounts of time to resolve and taking a high toll on relationships and the public trust.

MAINE
I. Background:
Maine's sodomy law was repealed effective 1976. Although the state does boast one openly lesbian elected official, if the response to our letterhead is any indication, she probably eats lunch alone. Beginning in October of 1994, we mailed five letters to various individuals within the state's Department of Education. To date, two responses have been received, each of which contained one sentence. That one sentence was, "In Maine, textbooks and curriculum are adopted by local school boards at a local level." The regular state legislative session runs from Jan-03 to Apr-17. The American Bar Association (ABA) recommended in 1990 that all state codes on judicial conduct adopt non-discrimination prohibitions that include sexual orientation, which 25 states did, including Maine. In late Sept. 1996, Maines Attorney General filed civil rights lawsuits against Maine teenagers who have attacked other youth people for perceived sexual orientation.

Healthy Youth At A Glance 2005
Prevention Effectiveness Adolescent and School Health Web Site
The health of young people, and the adults they will become, is critically linked to the health-related behaviors they adopt. Certain behaviors that are often established during youth contribute markedly to today’s major killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and injuries. These behaviors include tobacco use; unhealthy dietary habits; inadequate physical activity; alcohol and other drug use; sexual behaviors that can result in HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended pregnancies; and behaviors that result in violence and unintentional injuries (e.g., driving while intoxicated). These behaviors place young people at increased risk for serious health problems, both now and in the future.
Health Challenges
  • During the past 20 years, decreases in physical activity coupled with unhealthy eating has resulted in a doubling of the percentage of children and adolescents who are overweight.
