School Achievement Reports Often Exclude the Disabled
By DIANA JEAN SCHEMO New York Times August 30, 2004
The first time Tyler Brenneise, a 10-year-old who is autistic and mildly retarded, took the same state achievement tests as California's nondisabled children, his mother, Allison, anxiously awaited the results, along with the state report card on his special education school, the Del Sol Academy, in San Diego. But when the California Department of Education issued its annual report on school performance several months later, Del Sol Academy was nowhere to be found. Ms. Brenneise wrote state officials asking why. "They wrote back," she said, "that the school doesn't exist."
That is because San Diego labels Del Sol a program, not a school, said Karen Bachoffer, spokeswoman for the San Diego schools. And like most other states, California does not provide report cards for programs that educate disabled children.

Two of the students each will receive $50,000 college scholarships. All others will get $1,000 scholarships. The two top winners will be announced at a Free Spirit ceremony at the National Press Club on March 24.
The scholarship winners will be brought here to receive their awards and participate in a journalism conference which culminates with attendance at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year Award ceremony. At the event, students will have the opportunity to meet the 2003 Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year, Greg Mortenson, a Montana humanitarian who has dedicated his life to establishing schools in Central Asia.
The program, funded by the Freedom Forum, began in 1999 to honor Neuharth, founder of the Freedom Forum and USA TODAY. The scholarships and conference program are designed to assist students who are pursuing journalism careers and to inspire them through conference sessions with prominent media professionals. The Close Up Foundation assists the Freedom Forum in administering the program.
"We want to encourage these young people to become free-spirited journalists who dream, dare and do," Neuharth said.

School Library Teacher Concentration
School library teachers (SLT) manage the library media technology centers that serve as the hubs of information and educational activity in schools. In addition to working directly with children and young adults, they collaborate with classroom teachers and provide information resources that enhance school curriculum. For individuals who seek certification as school library teachers, the GSLIS School Library Teacher program provides exceptional academic and professional training. The National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) endorses our program and external accrediting agencies commend us on the program's outstanding quality. Simmons SLT students are noted for their exceptionally high pass rates on the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). The SLT program prepares students for NASDTEC library teacher licensure. NASDTEC certification for the Northeastern region is valid in 26 states including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Rhode Island. In addition to monitored fieldwork and a school practicum at the elementary-school or secondary-school level, course requirements include: Technology and the School Library Media Center (
