27 Snappy Rules for Good and Evil in Library Architecture (2000) is aimed at public libraries, but many rules are applicable to school libraries as well. SLJ Online Article: Architectural Follies by Serena Fenton (1 February 1999) has practical advice on creating the school library of your dreams. Computer Ergonomics for Elementary School provides a good overview of computer ergonomics for elementary school students, and it also contains some inexpensive solutions to making computer use more comfortable for students. Library Alive! (PDF) by Rose Dotten is a 5 page document on what to look for when designing or redesigning a school library. Maine School Library Facilities Handbook is a fairly detailed handbook that contains an overview and description of essential areas, comparison chart, square footage table, shelving requirements, advice, glossary, resources, and more. NCEF Information Resources: Libraries/Media Centers contains an annotated list of links, books, and journal articles on designing school library or media centers. This is the best webpage that I have found on facilities so I recommend that you start here.

The school library media teacher, in order to be effective, must translate the mission, goals, objectives, policies and procedures of the school library media program into action through effective leadership, planning, and evaluation. EDCI 355A Administration of School Media Centers is the class in which LMT candidates most directly address the skills related to administrative leadership. (Instructor Course Description)

February 1999 Maine: Out Of The Woods And Into The Call Center Islands floating in the gray morning fog across the water, which slowly swirls about and breaks on the rocks and laps against the boats that rise and fall with its swells, a fog horn is lowering its doleful tune in the distance: Morning in Maine, quiet on the shore or in the deep woods. But there is another Maine, beyond the peaceful retreat of the tourist postcard: ever-greater numbers of the people of Maine heading off to work. One of the main forces in getting more people in Maine back to work is Governor Angus King Jr. (until the recent event in Minnesota spotlighted the disquieting influence of pop culture on politics, the only independent governor in the nation). Speak with Governor King, and you will quickly notice that he cannot conceal his pride in the virtues of the people of Maine. "People distinguish Maine," he espouses. Among the many assets of the people of Maine he cites is the loyalty of Maine's workforce. "The average industry worker in Maine has been with the same company for 16 years," he said. As governor, King has been intensely interested in both education and business. As a parent, he can personally attest to the quality of Maine's school system, which produces students who recently ranked first in the nation in math and science among fourth and eighth graders and ranked at the top of a

Maine School Library Facilities Handbook PREFACE
Table of Contents
Considerations Essential Areas Comparison Tables ... Committee Excellent school library media centers require excellent programs, staff, materials, and facilities. The Maine School Library Facilities Handbook is designed to assist school library media specialists and architects in planning new or renovated facilities to meet the continually changing needs of both school children and school communities. Computers and telecommunications continue to transform how students access, use and create information. Goals 2000, the State of Maine Learning Results, Improving America's Schools Act (IASA), and other school reform legislation carry the expectation that all students will be able users of a variety of resources and technologies. Students in our schools must develop the skills needed to locate, evaluate, and use information in order to meet their academic and personal needs, and to participate fully in a technological society. The school library media specialist, in collaboration with classroom teachers, provides a library media program in which individual users, groups of students, and whole classes learn, develop, and practice these skills. These expanded expectations for students, along with the need to follow federal ADA requirements to accommodate the needs of the disabled, necessitate a new look at library design. Library media center facilities must provide for a variety of learning and teaching styles and access to new technologies. The library media center must be flexible and incorporate spaces which can accommodate a variety of simultaneous activities: whole class instruction, individual research, group work, recreational reading, and quiet study. ADA requirements often necessitate more space and special equipment or furnishings to accommodate the needs of physically disabled students. The growing role of school library media centers necessitates additional areas and increased square footage.

Seabed Drifters for Study of Sand Erosion Released July 5 in Saco Bay, Maine
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 12, 2004
Last week, scientists with the University of Maine School of Marine
Sciences deployed seabed drifters throughout Saco Bay in a Sea
Grant-funded study to understand sand accumulation and erosion on Saco Bay beaches. Southern Saco Bay shorelines continue to experience severe erosion, resulting in the loss of property and houses in some areas. Scientist Dan Belknap of the University of Maine and colleagues are investigating natural coastal processes that carry sand as well as the role of jetties in accelerated beach erosion. Their results could contribute to beach nourishment planning and shoreline erosion mitigation efforts in Saco Bay.
The drifters, plastic disks and rods with a survey card and ballast
attached, are designed to travel with sand along the seafloor and should wash onto shore within a week of deployment. The seabed drifter project will allow scientists to get information about the direction and rates of sand movement. They ask that anyone who finds a washed up drifter fill out the survey card with the location where they found it and send it to Laura Brothers, Department of Earth Sciences, Bryand Global Sciences Center, Orono, ME 04469, phone 207-581-1998, e-mail laura.brothers@umit.maine.edu.

Information Technology at Area Schools
Internet Connectivity: Rumford is a rural town in western Maine that is slowly
building a community online. The local schools, library, hospital, several businesses,
including the Chamber of Commerce and local tourist agencies, already feature web-sites
which offer informational services to visitors and tourists as well as area residents.
However, modern e-commerce services are yet to be explored by these businesses, and
some businesses and health care resources are still in the process of launching their
presence on the World Wide Web. It is approximated, though accurate figures are unavailable, that around 1000 households and businesses in the Rumford area have access to the Internet through the five major internet service providers serving the community. Internet Service Providers: LogOn America (Formerly Agate.net): This Internet Service provider has about 300 customers in the Rumford area. LogOn America is based out of Kennebunk, Maine. www.logonamerica.com
