Barry B. Longyear
Biography
Attaboys

It was a dark and stormy night . . .
I was born in the Harrisburg Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1942. That part of the hospital has since been torn down. My home was across the Susquehanna River in a thinly populated pastoral settlement in York County that was then called Frogtown. It is no longer thinly populated, pastoral, or called Frogtown. The home I was born into was filled to the limit with brilliance, literacy, music, wit, passion, and sickness. It has since burned down. I look upon change as permanence.
I attended a number of schools: Siler School (I'm not sure of the spelling. It was kindergarten, after all); the Harrisburg Academy (back when it was still in Harrisburg), public school in Scottsdale, Arizona, Tarrytown School in Tarrytown, New York, Sanford School in Hockessin, Delaware, and then a long stretch at Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Virginia, where I graduated in 1960.
Afterward, I attended a commercial art school in Pittsburgh (the same one artist and illustrator Kelly Freas attended, The Pittsburgh Institute of Art), there was some wandering around, then in 1962 I enlisted in the U.S. Army. I served with the 30th Artillery Brigade on Okinawa as a HAWK missile and launcher technician, and later with the 6th Missile Battalion in Key West, Florida. I was discharged in 1965 and attended Wayne State University for a time. There I met and eloped with the mysterious Jean. After some more wandering in Detroit, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia, we moved to Farmington, Maine.

    ROTC AT HOUGHTON
The St. Bonaventure University (SBU) United States Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) was established in 1936 to qualify select students for commissions as officers in the United States Army. Houghton College students participate in ROTC through a cross-enrollment agreement between the two colleges. First-year and sophomore classes are taught at Houghton. Junior and senior students must travel to SBU, about 40 minutes from campus. The program produces officers in nearly every branch of the Army.
    Complementary Outcomes
Every Houghton student takes the core curriculum, taught by Houghton College professors, whether in ROTC or not. This curriculum is designed to provide breadth; Houghton students study writing, history, foreign language, communication, literature, social science, physical education, mathematics, science, Biblical and philosophical foundations, and music and art. Complementing the Houghton curriculum and college leadership objectives, the Army ROTC course work, taught by SBU military science professors, is designed to develop leadership abilities in all participating students. Army ROTC courses provide leadership training that is not duplicated elsewhere in the college curriculum, aimed at developing self-assurance, personal discipline, physical stamina, poise, bearing, responsibility, and other qualities required of every leader - whether an Army officer or a leader in some other endeavor. The ROTC course of instruction is a helpful adjunct to the academic major and can assist students in attaining their professional goals.

The North Atlantic Regional High School is located in Lewiston, Maine. NARHS is a state-authorized private school, recognized by the Department of Education, and fully accredited by the National Private Schools Association. We assist in designing and delivering a custom-designed program for each student, whether he or she is attending public school, private school, college classes, or homeschool. For homeschool families, parents decide and direct the content of each course, while fulfilling the requirements for each specific high school credit. Once the student has acquired the necessary credits, he or she is eligible for a high school diploma. Students graduate with varying numbers of high school credits according to their ability, ambition, and academic goals.
Founded and incorporated in 1989, we adhere to the foundational core curriculum outlined by the state, but allow broad flexibility in fulfilling those requirements under the careful evaluation of our certified staff.
Students working on their high school courses are allowed to work at their own pace; there are no speed limits here. Students are allowed to go as fast as they like, or as slow as they need.
