  • Sturdy boxes are a must as they will need to be stacked vertically. Boxes that reams of paper come in are a nice size to hold books. We are coordinating with the statewide interlibrary loan delivery service. Last day for pick-ups will be September 22 nd . Interested libraries should pool efforts with neighboring libraries. An idea would be to put a notice on a bulletin board, either in your library or in the community (or both) announcing that you are taking part in Project Katrina: Read for Relief.

MMC Library named Library of the Month
(September 2004)
Contact: Zsofia McMullin, Maine Medical Center (207) 662-3294
Maine Medical Center’s Library has been named Library of the Month for September by the Southern Maine Library District.
According to Shirley Helfrich, District Consultant for Maine State Libraries, the library of the month program was established in 2001 to share information about the 300 libraries located in the Southern Maine Library District.
The MMC Library was established around 1896 when it was first mentioned in the 26th Annual Report of the Maine General Hospital. Since then, the Library and its collections have grown significantly: Today the Library subscribes to 465 print journals, along with 5,431 monographs, 10,560 bound serials, 93 e-books and 242 e-journals. During recent renovations, new public-access computers were added and old computers were replaced with new workstations.
According to Janet Cowen, Director of the MMC Library, while the printed materials are important to the Library, it is striving to become an electronic resource to MMC doctors and staff. “We’re making it easier for people to access our services and resources when it’s inconvenient to come to the Library.
By going to the Library’s webpage, users can request literature searches and copies of articles, ask reference questions, search a number of databases, and read the full text of many electronic books and journals. The MMC Library offers a variety of databases, including Medline, the National Library of Medicine’s database of journal articles; the Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL); PsychInfo; Evidence Based Medicine Reviews (EBMR); Natural Medicines Database; and Micromedex, referenced data on drug dosing and other information related to pharmaceuticals.

The maine State Library has a Fact Sheet and a Preface to that Fact Sheet for public Read the entire Preface at the maine State Library Web Site.
http://circrider.msln.net/cipa_info.htm
MSLN - CIPA, Content Filtering and AUPs
Background
MSLN is currently using an "enterprise" solution for filtering schools that are connected to MSLN to comply with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA). In order to meet the requirements imposed by this federal law (CIPA) and eliminate the risk of MSLN losing E-rate funding, content filtering was turned on for all schools connected to MSLN on July 1, 2002. At that time public libraries were not required to filter but on June 23, 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court in United States v. ALA reversed the District Court's decision Supreme Court ruling libraries that receive federal e-rate funds will be required to filter beginning July 1, 2004. (From the ALA's - PDF format)
The Maine State Library has a Fact Sheet and a Preface to that Fact Sheet for public libraries at their website.
From the Maine State Library's Preface
"First a reminder - Because telecommunications services (telephone services, 56k lines, T1, ATM, etc.) are not subject to CIPA, libraries may apply for such services without the need to acquire filters. This means that libraries may continue to receive E-Rate funding for such services either by applying for them on their own or by continuing to participate in MSLN for the transport part of the service (We hope to be able to provide more information about this kind of option in the next fact sheet and see it as a next step after libraries have considered the pros and cons of continuing as a full-participant in MSLN.)"
