And Trask, an open source advocate and the Technology Teacher/Coordinator for the Vassalboro Community School should know he is leading the charge to bring Linux into Maine's classrooms. Speaking to a full house last Thursday, Trask hosted a full-day seminar for area educational technologists and principals anxious to learn how to move their computer systems from proprietary technologies to open source Linux, on servers and the desktop. High costs and licensing restrictions are key reasons educators are considering a switch. But Trask notes that is not the only reason. "Stability, ease of use, and ease of management all drove me to Linux," he adds. His school saved $5,000 this year alone in licensing fees to Microsoft with a move to open source.

Teaching and Education Careers
in Maine
A resource center for educators interested in employment in Maine's K-12 public schools. Maine educators enjoy some of the best teaching conditions in the U.S. They teach in small schools - the average elementary school has 262 students; the average secondary school has 509. And they have small classes - the average student-teacher ration state wide is 14:1. Many educators believe the state's strong communities and small schools and classes are an important factor in Maine students' high achievement. Year after year, Maine students achieve at the top nationally on the National Assessment for Educational Progress. And according to a July, 1999 report released by the Children's Rights Council, Maine is rated as the Number One place in the country to raise a child. This resource center is designed for educators considering relocating to or starting their careers in Maine. Included are teacher and educational support personnel job listings, plus information about teacher certification, education technician authorization, teacher salaries and benefits, school system profiles, and information about towns and cities. School Profile Information
The Federal "No Child Left Behind Act" (NCLBA) The NCLBA requires that to be eligible to receive federal NCLBA funds, each state, and each school system and school in each state, must issue a report card describing key features of its educational status. The Maine Department of Education intends to fulfill both the statewide and local report card requirements of the NCLBA by expanding the content and format of its School Profiles web site. Schools and school systems will be responsible for communications within their communities regarding the availability and use of this web-based education data. Much of the required data is already contained in the existing School Profiles. However, some data is not yet available. Furthermore, the Department of Education is still waiting for more guidance regarding some of the new data requirements. The necessary changes to the School Profiles will be phased in during coming months, as data becomes available and/or as clarification regarding data requirements is provided by the U.S. Department of Education.
