cbrehme@buffalo.edu Background
I arrived in the Geography Department at the University at Buffalo in August, 2004. Prior to this, I spent seven years as a GIS professional in Maine working with rural coastal communities on resource management, community development and education projects. I hold degrees in Geography from the University of Southern Maine (BA 1995) and University of Idaho (MS 1997). From 1997 to 2004 I developed and directed numerous GIS and web-based projects at a non-profit in Rockland, Maine. During that time I worked on several marine science research efforts including the Penobscot Bay Resource Collaborative and the Gulf of Maine Census of Marine Life . I was active in spatial data sharing and policy initiatives including the Gulf of Maine Information Exchange and the Maine GeoLibrary Previous Research
From 2001-2003 I led a project to explore the potential for GIS in small, isolated communities on the Maine coast, with funding from two NSF awards. The project was designed in collaboration with community leaders to support existing information management initiatives and needs in each community. There were several goals to this effort: to develop local capacity for GIS; to support collaboration among existing community groups and institutions in each setting; to facilitate resource co-management among fishermen, scientists, and managers; and to create a new model for information sharing between state and local government in Maine. One of the outcomes of the project was the creation of GIS governing boards in each of the participating communities. These boards allow concerns and issues to be discussed among citizens with a variety of interests and backgrounds, and provide a legitimate political body to negotiate with the state.

Earthwatch International Educator Team Teaches Live from the Pantanal
Team members will conduct field research on Brazil's wetland wildlife and connect to classrooms via the Internet
MAYNARD, MA Fifteen teachers from Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Washington and the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul will venture to the vast wetlands of Brazil's Pantanal, February 14-25, to join a cross cultural team of educators, scientists, and geographers. As part of Earthwatch's research initiative with Conservation International of Brazil, the teachers will work with scientists to map and monitor endangered wildlife to help protect this unique area.
Although few people have heard of it, the Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world and one of the most spectacular wildlife areas in South America. Amidst caimans and capybaras, teachers will communicate with their students via email, photos, teleconferencing, and online lessons. Upon return home teachers will share what they have learned through projects at schools and workshops with colleagues.

The courses I teach are listed and described below.
Current Courses
FYS 102 - Geology of Volcanic Eruptions: Volcanic eruptions are amongst the most powerful and spectacular of natural phenomena. Why do volcanoes erupt? Where on earth do volcanoes occur? Why are there no volcanoes in Ohio? How does molten lava form? Why do some volcanoes explode violently and others simply emit rivers of lava? How do eruptions affect our planet and local populations? How do scientists, local officials and the press deal with volcanic crises? This course addresses these and many other fundamental questions about our volcanically active planet. Through readings, class sessions, still images, video footage, movies, and laboratory exercises, we will focus on the nature of volcanic eruptions, their products, and the hazards they pose and benefits they offer both to human populations and to life on earth.

Geovisions Five Excerpts from: Vol. 3 Issue 2 Advanced Summer Institute - 1998 The Maine Geographic Alliance Advanced Summer Institute began on July 26, 1998 with a picnic supper at Kineowtha Park in Wilton, ME. Maine TCs had the chance to renew old acquaintances and to meet some new friends. The seven TCs from Maine were joined by four TCs: Nick Foery from Delaware, Christine Dowding, Cheryl Williamson and Mike McKillop from Rhode Island. Matthew Bampton and Frank Hodges from the University of Southern Maine; Eldred Rolfe, Paul Frederic, and Cathleen McAnneny from University of Maine at Farmington with their assistants Chris Taylor and Rebecca Kyllonen. Concepts of economic geography and specifics about the Sandy River basin and Maine were presented by Eldred Rolfe. We divided into two groups. One group led by Matthew Bampton, studied the physical geography of the basin measuring gradients, stream velocities and creating profiles. They also conducted a land use-land cover survey of the watershed. A second group led by Cathleen McAnneny, was joined by Frank Hodges who helped uncover some of the settlement history of the northern end of the watershed. This group studied the human geography of the area by interviewing people, collecting information about the human heritaage of the area and evaluating comprehensive and economic development plans of the many communities. Both groups toured the Otis Mill and a wood lot operation in Jay.

    for National Geographic News
February 2, 2004 Robert Redford, Harrison Ford, and other Hollywood 'A-listers' are among the big-name supporters of Americans for a Maine Woods National Park, an interest group that also includes scientists, educators, and environmentalists like Jane Goodall and Edward O. Wilson. The committee was founded by RESTORE: The North Woods, a conservation organization that's spearheading a protection plan for an enormous swath of woodlands in the U.S. East. The proposed national park would encompass 3.2 million acres (1.3 million hectares), an area larger than Yellowstone and Yosemite combined. The woods in question hold a special place in American history. "It's sort of ironic that the national park movement happened and the place that inspired many of those early proponents is not yet one of those protected places," said Jym St. Pierre, Maine Director of RESTORE. "Thoreau didn't go to the Rockies, he came to Katahdin and wrote about the idea of creating national preserves in the East. Teddy Roosevelt made many trips into these areas of Northern Maine."

Maine Bid Draws High-Profile Debate At the core of the debate are economics, ecological protection, and time-honored Maine traditions of recreational land use. Changing Economics "I think more and more people are recognizing the value of the idea we've put on the table," RESTORE's St. Pierre said. "That's taking advantage of the interest in ecotourism, the service sector jobs, small manufacturing, and moving away from smokestack industries. The trend is clear." But others seek to protect the timber-related jobs that remain. "It's important to remember that communities like Millinocket and Greenville are gateway communities whose economic livelihood depends on what's happening on the lands to the north and west of them," said Tim Glidden, an officer with Land for Maine's Future (LMF), a state government funding group for land conservation. "We all want to be sure it's not fragmented and developed," said George Smith of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine. "I do give the park proponents some credit for being one of the factors that has encouraged the state's leaders to secure our future in those woods."
