    http://www.rootsweb.com/~megenweb/geography.html
Maine Location Maine is the dome of New England, situated in the northeast corner of the United States, extending like a wedge into the Dominion of Canada, which it faces along a frontier of about 500 miles. Only one state has a longer line of contact with Canada. As a whole the state is nearly due west of Central Europe, due north of Venezuela; about half of its territory is further north than Montreal. Area The total area of the state is 33,040 sq. miles. It is the 35th in rank among the states of the Union, midway in size between Indiana and South Carolina, very nearly half the total area of New England. It is just about three times the size of Belgium, or twice the size of Switzerland. The line of greatest length in the state would extend from Chicago to Lexington in one direction, or nearly to St. Paul in the opposite direction. Surface Features Maine is situated on the southern flank of the Laurentian Mountains and its surface features are controlled by the fact. The interior of the state is a timbered mass of rounded hills of granite, for the most part heavily wooded. Being a part of the oldest land surface on the continent, the erosive power of water acting through long ages has cut many winding valleys, left numerous lake areas, and is the explanation of the peculiarly indented coast. The action of ice during the glacial age emphasized all these features. Development Through settlements along the coast of Maine go back to very early times, yet the state has not developed its resources. Lacking only 344 square miles of being as large as the rest of New England, its population is only about one-tenth as great; Massachusetts being nearly nine times, Rhode Island nearly twenty times as densely settled. The new economic age now dawning will utilize the great natural resources of Maine, and no doubt a great development is at hand.

Maine Audubon Perspective Leading the Charge
Made with no congressional input or oversight, these changes are especially harmful to people and wildlife in Maine. Geography, weather and bad luck place Maine downwind from major, outdated coal-burning power plants to Maine's west and south. These power plants have been "grandfathered" into the current Clean Air Act, and in the absence of the NSR, will be allowed to increase the disproportionately high levels of pollutants spewing from their stacks and traveling eastward on the jet stream. Wind and rain bring power-plant pollutants, including mercury, directly overhead and into our water. An estimated 70 percent of Maine's air pollution blows in from out of state. And that means more mercury pollution is threatening Maine, which already has the dubious distinction of having the highest documented levels of mercury in its lakes and ponds compared to any other state in the nation. In addition to the mercury coming from outside the state, incinerators, industrial facilities and sewage treatment plants within Maine are also sources of mercury pollution.

A GEOGRAPHY THEME USING THE BOOK SARAH, PLAIN AND TALL
    LINDA BONTRAGER
Grade Level: Time: The time for this lesson will depend upon the students. Some areas will take more time than others. This is a theme study and a certain amount of time must be set aside each day for each subject area to be covered.
    Geographic Theme
Location, Place, Human Environment, Regions, Movement
    Purpose
Geography can be taught using a variety of books. In first grade students love to be read aloud to. To use literature and add a geography lesson from that piece of literature is exciting and fun. A theme can move smoothly from one subject matter to the next by using children's literature. The classroom must reflect this by having centers/stations arranged for the children to have a hands-on experience. Art work and written work needs to show all subject areas are being covered.
    Objectives
    The student will:
    • be attentive to the reading of Sarah Plain and Tall
    • locate Maine and Kansas on the wall map and desk map and put a large round sticky dot on each state and stretch a piece of twine from Maine to Kansas.

Throughout history, most salt marshes along the Eastern Seaboard have been transformed by human activity, according to historian Kimberly Sebold, whose research has focused on the coastal wetlands. Mapping Maine History New historical atlas uses traditional and high-tech tools to provide a unique perspective on the past The Abenaki peoples called it Owascoag,
The role of salt marshes Historical Atlas of Maine, an upcoming 240-page volume culminating a seven-year research project built on rigorous historical and geographic scholarship. In full-color, two-page plates, the atlas details the environmental, economic, social and cultural interactions that shaped the state and region, from deglaciation 14,000 years ago to the 21st century. Drawing on a range of academic disciplines, the atlas incorporates new ways of thinking about human history. The perspectives are presented visually through a diverse combination of traditional, age-old methods (historical records, drawings, charts and photographs) and new digital technologies (three-dimensional computer-generated maps and satellite imagery). In these respects, the atlas will differ radically from all previous historical atlases of Maine or works on Maine history. The multi-year research project that is bringing the atlas to fruition also is unprecedented.
