It is probably named after the French province of Maine . Another possibility for the name "Maine" is that the people living on islands along the coast of Maine used to speak of going to the mainland as "going over to the Main." Its U.S. postal abbreviation is ME . Four U.S. Navy ships were named USS Maine in honor of the state. The state is generally chilly, though warm summers can bring an average of 15 days above 80 degrees F for the month of July.

By Emerson "Tad" Baker
was first contacted about consulting for COLONIAL HOUSE in the fall of 2002. By that time the production team had decided upon filming in Maine, and they were very interested in having a consultant who specialized in the early history of that region. Maine has a rich and varied early history that often gets overlooked, so I was eager to join the effort. Also, I was excited to see PBS tackle 17th-century history. The era of the first European settlement of America is a compelling and relevant topic, but difficult to do in a traditional documentary without the vintage photographs and archival film footage of more recent eras.
In January 2003, we had a meeting, at Thirteen/WNET New York, of the production team and a group of historical advisors experts in all aspects of early European settlement of America. In the meeting we began to narrow down the specifics of our plantation. Although the colony was physically set in Maine, we wanted to create a broader based experience, one that drew its inspiration from the many initial efforts at settlement in North America.
Still, the Maine setting limited some of our options. Maine's geography and climate meant that our colony could not be a tobacco colony like Virginia or Maryland. Instead, its basis would have to be activities like fishing, lumbering, and fur trading. Fortunately, our colony could be more typical in its religious practices. Settlements in Maine began as Anglican colonies, rather than the Puritan colonies of southern New England. The devout Puritans of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay are well known to all schoolchildren, however they were in the minority of English settlers who came to America in the 17th century. Most colonists were contented Anglicans (members of the Church of England).

Abbreviation:
ME Maine used to be a French territory and its name comes from the French province of the same name. The largest of the New England states in area, Maine, in 1820, was the 23rd state to join the Union. The most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi River is appropriately called the "Pine Tree State", as 90 percent of its land is forest. Maine forms the northeastern corner of the United States. West Quoddy Head is the country's easternmost piece of land. Along the famous rock-bound coast of Maine are lighthouses, sandy beaches, quiet fishing villages and thousands of offshore islands. Jagged rocks and cliffs, and thousands of bays and inlets add to the rugged beauty of Maine's coast. Inland, there are sparkling lakes, rushing rivers, green forests and towering mountains. Maine's Acadia National Park is the only national park in New England.

  • The Power of Place: A Brief Introduction to Maine Writers
By Amanda L. Christy The word 'Maine' for most people conjures up images of rocky shores, pine trees, and lobster dinners. Those who have visited know that crossing the Piscataqua River and entering New England's largest state means entering another world. A big blue sign on the border proclaims "Welcome to Maine – the Way Life Should Be." And it is. The physical beauty of Maine's geography alone approaches the mythical: mountainous lake regions, the Great North Woods, rugged coastline, and vast potato fields. Harsh winters melt into magical summers. Life moves a little more slowly, and the savoring of it is a little more important. Sitting in my lush backyard on a perfect summer day, it is easy to understand why so many writers have felt drawn to this place. Maine is steeped in the New England literary tradition that continues to influence the active artistic community that thrives here today. This overview is intended to provide a brief introduction to this rich heritage. It includes both native writers and those

    LOCATION
Van Buren is the first town to welcome you as you enter the Saint John Valley in Aroostook County. "The County" is in the northernmost portion of Maine and consists of 6,453 square miles. It is one of the largest counties in the Continental United States and is larger than approximately four states. Aroostook is bordered on the west, north and east by Canada, and is separated from the rest of Maine by a broad tract of forest. Aroostook is famous for its quality potatoes and its hard-working residents.
Van Buren is located approximately 22 miles north of Caribou and, when you come down into the "Valley", the view is breath-taking. On the Northern boundary, you can see the Saint John River which acts as the border between the United States and Canada, spacious forests, countless steeply sloped hills and numerous open fields and farms. Most of the land is between 500 and 900 feet above sea level. Many of the larger hills exceed 1,000 feet in elevation, offering pleasant views through the crystal clear air.
The Saint John Valley is an area of great beauty. And just as the "County" is culturally and geographically distinct from Maine, so too is the "Valley" somewhat distinct from the rest of Aroostook, due to its Acadian heritage and its international flavor. Van Buren enjoys a close relationship with the neighboring Canadian towns, especially with Saint Leonard, where distant and not so distant relatives reside.

    THE BYPASSED EAST
A map of America's eastern seaboard reveals a lack of large cities along the coast north of Boston. Few major overland routes extend inland from this coast, and interior cities are generally smaller than those along the ocean. This area, comprising northern New England and the Adirondacks of New York, can be referred to as the Bypassed East ( Map 5 The Bypassed East is near, even astride, major routeways, but not on them. Ocean transportation can easily bypass the region, putting it in a transportation shadow that has produced slow regional economic growth and even stagnation. Southern New England is a part of metropolitan America. Northern New England, for the most part, is not. It is much more like Canada's Atlantic Provinces. THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Much of the Bypassed East is beautiful. The Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire contains some of the most rugged topography in the eastern United States. The extensive shoreline thrusts out into the Atlantic and meets the ocean's waves with a heavily indented coast that mixes dramatic headlands with many small coves bordered by rocky beaches. Large empty areas, almost totally lacking in settlement, are only hours away from some of the largest cities on the continent. Most of the Bypassed East is a part of the northeastern extension of the Appalachian Uplands. However, the structure of the area bears little surface resemblance to the clearly delineated ridge and valley system of the southern Appalachians.
