Geography of the Maine Coastline With 3,500 miles of coastline, Maine is one of the most geographically diverse areas where Legendary Lighthouses are located. In the early 19th century, because of its rich fishing grounds and many harbors, it was the sailing and shipbuilding capitol of the United States. The mixture of rocky coastlines, white sand beaches, small coves, large harbors, and over 2,000 offshore islands made it a treacherous area to navigate. The broad white beaches of the southern Maine coast host famed coastal villages like Kennebunkport , Old Orchard Beach, and Ogunquit. As you move further to the northeast the coastline gives way to Casco Bay and the Greater Portland region with its always busy deepwater harbor. Front page Table of Contents Abstract Chapters Bibliography Chapter 5: The Gulf of Maine Environmental Data and Information Management System 1. Overview The Gulf of Maine geography is a semi-enclosed sea in the northwest Atlantic, whose rich coastal and marine ecology sharply defines the culture and economy of three U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. For several years, these five governments have worked on joint management of the Gulf of Maine’s natural resources through a bilateral Council on the Marine Environment. One of the Council’s stated goals is communication and information inter-change: at its outset in 1990, it created a Data and Information Management Committee (DIMC) to oversee communications and information interchange. Figure 5.1. Gulf of Maine geography One of this Committee’s main accomplishments was a clearinghouse for data held by the region’s various public agencies and research institutions: the Gulf of Maine Environmental Data and Information Management System (EDIMS). The EDIMS system was intended as a distributed information resource, which would draw on autonomous data sites throughout the region via a common network. This was an ambitious design for the time — especially since a basic networking infra-structure to support it did not become widespread until the recent growth of the Internet’s World Wide Web. Although EDIMS has thus far had only a minor impact on the Council’s activities, it has served as a rallying point for the Council’s data-related activities, and has begun to see some use in supporting communication and collaboration across the region.

Chair, Departmental Ph.D. Program Infrastructures for sharing geographic information among environmental agencies by John D. Evans Submitted to the Department of Urban Studies and Planning in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Information Systems in Planning ABSTRACT This research draws on several organizational and technological perspectives to examine the design and growth of infrastructures for inter-organizational geographic information sharing, and their role in collaborative environmental management. The study draws, first, on the experiences of selected coalitions of government agencies to discern their organizational dynamics; and on a software prototype that illustrates coming technological trends. The study gives special attention to geographic information, which often requires special handling and promises particularly important influences on organizations and joint policy-making. It also seeks to understand the interdependence between human and technical aspects of geographic information infrastructures.

Maine to Move to Atlantic Time?
A proposal to move Maine into the Atlantic Time Zone (one hour ahead of Eastern Time) has unanimously passed the state's State and Local Government Committee. The bill will now move to the state legislature and then would be sent to voters in 2006. The move is designed to provide more light in the evening for the state and to better collaborate with Canada's Maritime provinces. Some are not happy with the plan. Email to a Friend
