Abbreviation:
ME Maine used to be a French territory and its name comes from the French province of the same name. The largest of the New England states in area, Maine, in 1820, was the 23rd state to join the Union. The most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi River is appropriately called the "Pine Tree State", as 90 percent of its land is forest. Maine forms the northeastern corner of the United States. West Quoddy Head is the country's easternmost piece of land. Along the famous rock-bound coast of Maine are lighthouses, sandy beaches, quiet fishing villages and thousands of offshore islands. Jagged rocks and cliffs, and thousands of bays and inlets add to the rugged beauty of Maine's coast. Inland, there are sparkling lakes, rushing rivers, green forests and towering mountains. Maine's Acadia National Park is the only national park in New England.

Course Descriptions
University of Southern Maine
GEO 101J Human Geography Geography as a discipline is concerned with the location of things. But more importantly, geographers are interested in why things are located where they are and the relationships between different places and processes. This course examines social, economic, and political processes that shape the contemporary global landscape with particular emphasis on the relationships between developed and developing regions of the world. Cartography, population trends, agricultural systems, migration, urbanization, and industrialization are among the topics covered. Cr3. GYA 202D Research Methods Students will focus on the ways in which geographers and anthropologists conduct research. We will address the issues of research question formulation, methodological strategies, and analytic techniques. Topics include defining research problems, measurement, sampling, research design, and analysis. Examples, case studies, and data will be drawn from the disciplines of geography and anthropology. Prerequisite: one of the following: ANT 101 J, ANT 102 K, ANT 103 AND one of the following: GEO 1O1 J or GEO 102 K AND mathematics proficiency. Cr3.
GEO 203J Urban and Regional Development Students will survey contemporary patterns of urban and regional development through comparative analysis. The New Geography: How the Digital Revolution Is Reshaping the American Landscape by Joel Kotkin
Places Discussed
Book Notes
This book explores the changing nature of place and landscape in light of digital technologies. In brief, Kotkin doesn't see digital technologies making place irrelevant. Rather, because technologies make it possible to work from anywhere, place becomes very important to attract, retain, and provide settings for digital symbol workers (p. 6). Kotkin sketches out how knowledge workers want a lifestyle-driven place loaded with amenities in culture, arts, and entertainment. Places for knowledge workers include anti-urban elite rural enclaves (e.g., Camden, Maine), the midopolis (e.g., the burbs of St. Louis), the nerdistan of highly-educated tech workers (e.g., Cary, North Carolina), and small towns with natural beauty (e.g., Park City, Utah). In Kotkin's view, central business districts can serve a role to provide a contrasting (with suburban and rural places) experience for arts, entertainment, face-to-face meetings, and as a stage for activities in which people can see each other for social display or mating. However, a "Potemkin City" of symbolic monuments such as stadiums, casinos, and heavily-subsidized developments and museums (e.g., Cleveland, p. 63) does not provide urban vitality.

Geography Geographic Center of the U.S.
Source: U.S. Geological Survey, Dept. of the Interior There is no generally accepted definition of geographic center and no uniform method for determining it. Following the U.S. Geological Survey, the geographic center of an area is defined here as the center of gravity of the surface, or that point on which the surface would balance if it were a plane of uniform thickness. All localities in the following list, therefore, are approximate. No marked or monumented point has been established by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 states, the conterminous U.S., or the North American continent. A monument was erected in Lebanon, KS, the conterminous U.S. center, by a group of citizens. A cairn in Rugby, ND, marks the center of the North American continent.
