Lesson Plans and Classroom Activities about Maine Home State by State Lesson Plans - Alabama Lesson Plans Alaska Lesson Plans Arizona Lesson Plans Arkansas Lesson Plans ... Wyoming Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. The third largest and most populous state has great natural diversity ranging from deserts in the southeast to rainforest in the northwest. In between are the towering Sierra Nevada mountains which rise to over 4500 m. Not only is its annual farm output greater than that of any other state, so is its volume of construction and manufacturing.
NEVADA:

The state's name is taken from the Sierra Nevada, the mountain range shared with California. Mainly desert, Nevada is a region of rugged mountains, desert valleys and sparsely populated plains. The state is largely known for its glittering casinos which draw visitors from around the world. Pays de Loire
Pays-de-la-Loire’s territory stretches over 12,390 square miles––the size of Maryland––at the base of the Brittany peninsula and is France’s second leading agricultural region.  A third of its 3.2 million people is under 25, making it a young region.  The major cities either straddle the rivers that feed into the Loire or lie along a stretch of Atlantic Coast. The French Maine. Nantes - Castle
Abutting Normandy and Brittany is the old province of Maine that includes parts of today’s Sarthe and Mayenne départements.  The Sarthe River meanders through peaceful woodlands and fields dotted with picturesque small towns.  One of these, Malicorne-sur-Sarthe, possesses an 11th- century church, a 17th-century castle and a tradition of producing fine ceramics that dates back to 1740.  In Sablé-sur-Sarthe, a more ornate chateau now houses the National Library’s restoration and bookbinding workshops.  A few miles upstream is the Solesmes Abbey .  Founded in the 11th century, it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times but has kept its splendid 16th-century sculptures.  Today, it is a world-renowned center for Gregorian chant and the Benedictine monks’ services are open to the public.

  • The Power of Place: A Brief Introduction to Maine Writers
By Amanda L. Christy The word 'Maine' for most people conjures up images of rocky shores, pine trees, and lobster dinners. Those who have visited know that crossing the Piscataqua River and entering New England's largest state means entering another world. A big blue sign on the border proclaims "Welcome to Maine – the Way Life Should Be." And it is. The physical beauty of Maine's geography alone approaches the mythical: mountainous lake regions, the Great North Woods, rugged coastline, and vast potato fields. Harsh winters melt into magical summers. Life moves a little more slowly, and the savoring of it is a little more important. Sitting in my lush backyard on a perfect summer day, it is easy to understand why so many writers have felt drawn to this place. Maine is steeped in the New England literary tradition that continues to influence the active artistic community that thrives here today. This overview is intended to provide a brief introduction to this rich heritage. It includes both native writers and those

Maine - A State Unit Study This mini unit on MAINE uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study MAINE. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child's needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about ALABAMA and enjoyable for all who are participating. Maine's State Flag The state coat of arms is placed on a blue field. In the center of the shield a moose rests under a tall pine tree. A farmer and seaman represents the work that people did in early times. The North Star represents the state motto: "Dirigo". ("I Direct" ) Flag adopted 1909. Create a State "Infodesk": Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.

Arbona, Sonia I. (Ph.D., 1991), an assistant professor of geography at the University of Texas - Austin, is teaching courses in medical geography. She continues to work in Almolonga, a town in the western highlands of Guatemala. Last year she looked at the public health implications of intensive pesticide use. So far, she is concentrating on surface and groundwater contamination with agricultural chemicals. She and Dr. Hunter received the "Article with Best Content" award from the National Council for Geographic Education for their article in Journal of Geography, "Economic development threatens groundwater in Puerto Rico." Sonia is not sure that everything is bigger and better in Texas but she does say it is a lot warmer than Michigan (something her Puerto Rican nature appreciates). Introduction I have designed this website as a resource for MSAD#54 Fourth Grade teachers and students. Please feel free to use it as you study Maine's geography, history, and resources. If, as you use this lesson, you can think of any changes you would like me to consider, please email me. dsmall@msad54.k12.me.us My intent in creating a Maine Online Unit is to give teachers and students an easy to use resource that is already aligned with MSAD54 Curriculum Objectives and the Maine Learning Results. As students complete research aids, the budget spreadsheet and mapping activities teachers can be confident that objectives and standards are being met. This is a rather large website that includes many downloadable resources. Since it is the first website I have created that requires the learner to download so many different resources, there may be some glitches. I am hoping you will feel free to contact me with any problems that I can attempt to correct.
Learners This lesson is anchored in fourth grade social studies and involves language arts and math to a lesser extent. While it is designed for fourth grade students, it can be used with higher grade levels studying Maine. Some adaptations will be necessary for use with younger grades.

It is probably named after the French province of Maine. Another possibility for the name 'Maine' is that the people living on islands along the coast of Maine used to speak of going to the mainland as 'going over to the Main". Its U.S. postal abbreviation is ME . Four U.S. Navy ships were named USS Maine in honor of the state. The state is chilly, with moderately warm summers but very few actual hot days.
