They may present new ways of thinking about school subjects or alternate methods of engaging students in learning. Whatever the emphasis, it is the intensity of study that most characterizes the institute as a professional development option. They offer focused, continuous investigation of topics or themes that cannot be explored in occasional workshops. Frequently, institutes run from one week to three weeks, providing time for reflection and assimilation of information in a setting conducive to collegial learning. Institutes feature time, space, and support for teachers who want to explore new frameworks for thinking about their jobs and are willing to dedicate the time and effort required to change." Computational Analysis of Gene Regulation and Genome Organization
Computational Studies of Post-Transcriptional Gene Regulation
The control of when and where genes become activated is broadly referred to as gene regulation . Gene regulation is controlled by a complex mixture of forces that can act at any of the stages of gene activation: transcription of DNA to a precursor RNA, post-transcriptional processing of the RNA, translation of the RNA to a protein, or post-translational modification of the final protein product. As we improve our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of gene regulation, we correspondingly improve our ability to understand how gene regulation can be disrupted, which often results in either disease or developmental problems.
