Summary Maine has been paying for students to attend private schools since colonial times. A century ago, the state enacted the town "tuitioning" law that still serves students today. Under the law, school districts without public schools allow students to attend nonsectarian private or public schools in other districts.

SCHOOL DISCIPLINE
Your child has rights when he is being recommended for suspension or expulsion. To understand those rights, read School Discipline: Suspensions and Expulsions If your child gets special education services, or may be eligible to get those services, read: Expulsions and Suspensions of Special Education Students
HOMELESS STUDENTS
If your family or your child is homeless, your child still has the right to attend school without interruption. And you or your child has a right to choose which school he should attend. It's important for you to know that homelessness is broadly defined, and can include being doubled up with relatives or friends. It's not just if you are living in a shelter, motel, car or campground. For more information, see: Homeless Students Rights to Attend School Legal Tools to End Youth Homelessness
This booklet is written by The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty. It is primarily an overview of Federal laws, that is, laws that apply in every state, and phone numbers to national switchboards and hotlines.

Gulf of Maine Research Laboratory - Marine Science Education Lab Design Fishery Ecosystem Research Marine Biotechnology Research Sustaining A Way of Life Maine's freshwater and marine ecosystem is fundamental to our way of life. Maine's saltwater fisheries contribute an estimated $540 million per year to the Maine economy and 25,000 jobs. Fishing is the heart and soul of many of Maine's coastal communities, yet we know more about the surface of Mars than we do our oceans. Despite the central role that our marine ecosystem plays, many of our schools lack the minimal resources to teach marine science and technology concepts. Our coastal communities are increasingly impacted by marine policies, yet the research driving these policies is foreign to the public. The Gulf of Maine Research Laboratory will provide a high tech platform for Grade 5-12 students and the public to learn about marine science by interacting with marine scientists and research projects underway in our Lab, other Labs, and out at sea on vessels. Marine Science Translation The Marine Science Education Hall will be a flexible, extensible digital system for translating marine science principles and real research that's occurring in our Lab, other Labs around the State, and out at sea. GMRI is in a unique position to achieve the dual goals of standardizing a science translation process and developing and implementing a flexible digital display system that engages students and the public in marine science and its broader impacts.

The Maine E-conomic Classroom

The main goal of the Maine E-conomic Classroom financial literacy series is to provide Maine high schools with direct access to high quality programs delivered by financial industry practitioners, regulators, and educators.
The information will be presented in a factual and unbiased format in an effort to improve the knowledge and decision making skills of young adults as they prepare to fully enter into both the Maine and national economies. Combined with existing instruction at the high school level, Maine E-conomic Classroom strives to make Maine students the most financially literate in the nation. Sound personal money management skills will lead directly to higher levels of savings/investing, home ownership, improved credit ratings, and a stronger Maine economy.
(see photograph right: from l-r, Robert Mitchell, Governor John Baldacci, and David Leach).
These sessions will be provided in a BROADCAST fashion to interested sites via the distance learning (ATM) system with interaction to occur with the Cross building IP phone at (21100). To sign-up for this session please contact David Leach at:

Elija Parish Lovejoy (Class of 1826), perhaps Colby's most well known graduate, is remembered as the first martyr for a free press in the US; he was killed in 1837 by an angry mob while defending the anti-slavery newspaper he published in Alton, IL. Few recall, however, that Lovejoy began his career as an educator, first as the principal of his old school, China Academy in China, ME, and then as a schoolteacher in St. Louis. His introduction to newspaper work was a part-time job on the St. Louis Times, a job he pursued while working full-time as a teacher. Fewer still recall that Lovejoy came to what was then Waterville College in the first place only at the encouragement of Henry Stanwood, who assumed the principalship of China Academy in 1822, upon his graduation from the College. A close attachment quickly developed between teacher and pupil, and Stanwood persuaded Lovejoy to prepare to attend Waterville College (rather than Bowdoin, Williams, or Dartmouth) in the fall of 1823.
Colby is also proud to be the first previously all-male small college in New England to admit women. The first woman to graduate from Colby was Mary Low, who entered Colby in 1871 and graduated in 1875. During her career she became an expert in library science, made the first systematic catalogue of the Maine State Library, and was a frequent contributor to library journals. The second woman graduate, Louise Coburn, Class of 1877, also pursued a career as an educator and a scholar. She wrote many articles and poems, and is best remembered as the author of

The Maine Forest Biodiversity Project will use information on species and ecosystems to complete a statewide assessment of forest biodiversity.
