These circumstances offer promising opportunities for the city, according to Frank O'Hara of Planning Decisions. O'Hara was one of two consultants who presented city councilors Monday with a "Housing Study and Database," which offer a look at an Augusta divided into five tracts. The tracts are the same as those used in the U.S. Census. Will Mitchell, of Mitchell Geographics Inc., collated the data, which shows that while the city is gaining a property tax base at the Marketplace at Augusta, it is losing it in various neighborhoods. Also, the main conclusions of the study show that 2,000 people will retire from state government work in the next two years, and those people will be looking for housing near services. City staff can configure the data to learn a number of different things. "The city owns this database now," O'Hara said. City Manager William Bridgeo said the classic use of such numbers is to apply for federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) monies and other grants.

State Smoking Restrictions for Private-Sector Worksites, Restaurants, and Bars - United States, 1998 and 2004
Secondhand smoke is a known carcinogen ( ). Exposure to secondhand smoke causes approximately 35,000 heart disease deaths and 3,000 lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in the United States every year ( ). Implementing policies that establish smoke-free environments is the most effective approach to reducing secondhand smoke exposure among nonsmokers ( ). Smoking restrictions and smoke-free policies can take the form of laws or regulations implemented at the state or local level or of voluntary policies implemented by private employers and businesses. Smoking restrictions limit smoking to certain areas within a venue; smoke-free policies ban smoking within the entire venue. One of the national health objectives for 2010 is to establish laws in all 50 states and the District of Columbia (DC) that prohibit or restrict smoking in public places and worksites. A related objective calls for all worksites to voluntarily implement policies that prohibit or restrict smoking. To assess progress toward meeting the first objective, CDC reviewed the status of state laws restricting smoking as of December 31, 2004, updating a 1999 study that reported on such laws as of December 31, 1998 ( ). This report summarizes the changes in state smoking restrictions for private-sector worksites, restaurants, and bars that occurred during 19992004.The findings indicate an increase in the number and restrictiveness of state laws regulating smoking in private-sector worksites, restaurants, and bars from 1999 through 2004. At the end of 2004, however, 16 states still had no restrictions on smoking in any of the three settings considered. Although secondhand smoke exposure among U.S. nonsmokers has decreased sharply in recent years, a substantial portion of nonsmokers continue to be exposed to secondhand smoke (

Frequently Asked Questions About GreatSchools.net About School Profiles About Enhanced School Profiles About Searching for Schools About Comparing Schools ... General Questions About GreatSchools About School Profiles What kinds of schools are included on GreatSchools.net? GreatSchools.net includes profiles of all public elementary, middle and high schools in the United States, with more extensive information about schools in GreatSchools.net in-depth states. Charter schools, magnet schools, year-round schools, and some continuation and alternative schools are all included. Certain types of public school programs, such as regional occupational schools, adult schools or independent study schools may not be included because not enough information is available to create complete GreatSchools profiles. In addition, schools that have been in operation for less than two years may not be included, as sufficient data may not yet be available to create complete GreatSchools profiles.

Adolescent Literacy Project [detail]
In collaboration with the Center for Secondary Inquiry in Maine and CRM, The Education Alliance continues to produce research-based resources to provide guidelines for planning, implementing, and sustaining adolescent literacy initiatives at the secondary level; and to support professional development by illustrating the application of effective secondary literacy classroom practices in subject areas. The emphasis in this project in will be to disseminate useful research-based materials in Maine and analyze their application for wider dissemination.
Staff will also explore ways to align this work with a project of the Education Department at Brown University that focuses on the performing arts to engage secondary level students in literacy. That Brown University project takes place in several urban high schools in Rhode Island, primarily in Central Falls and Providence. These sites would be used to test our process in urban school settings and provide expanded learnings for other projects in this program area.

ABSTRACT
Using the World Wide Web to gather and process data from across English-speaking North America, I intend to plot the regional variations in the use of the terms "Pop" and "Soda" to describe carbonated soft drinks.
RESEARCH
The primary source of data for this study will be submissions from readers of this web page. Obviously, this may not be a completely random sampling, but since the primary objective of the study is to map the regional distribution and not the population distribution per response, this sample should suffice. Also, since a large percentage of internet users are college students who may use dialects not local to their current place of residence, this survey asks for the respondent's "home town" and the beverage-term used by most of the population there. This data will be imperfect at best, but should be the most accurate possible without actually going into the field, and certainly the most comprehensive study of the field to date.

Collections Overview
Burning of the Old South Church, Bath The Maine Historical Society Research Library documents all aspects of Maine's social, economic, political and cultural history. Of particular note are the personal papers of Maine's civic and business leaders, early proprietary, town and church records, shipping and maritime records, account books and business records, genealogical research collections, cartographic and land surveys, architectural and engineering drawings, photographs, prints, and broadsides. The collections cover the entire state with particular strength for southern Maine. Beginning in the mid-20th century, efforts have been increased to include all ethnic groups. Subject areas in addition to Maine history include general US history, particularly the periods of exploration thorough the Revolutionary War; genealogy; the Civil War; architecture, decorative and fine arts; transportation (especially shipping and railroads); English local history; biographies; and 19th century belles letters.
