    BIG BOX ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDIES
Download a PDF version of this page Below are summaries and links to key studies that examine the impact of Wal-Mart and other large retail chains and, in some cases, the benefits of locally owned businesses. For ease of use, we've organized these studies into the following categories (though they do not all fit neatly into one category):
  • City Costs
  • State Costs
Because many of their employees do not earn enough to make ends meet, states are reporting high costs associated with providing healthcare (Medicaid) and other public assistance to big-box employees.
  • Economic Impact of Local Businesses vs. Chains
Studies have found that locally owned stores generate much greater benefits for the local economy than national chains.

  • These studies look at how the arrival of a big-box retailer displaces sales at existing businesses, which must then downsize or close. This results in job losses and declining tax revenue, which some of these studies quantify.

  • Studies have found that big-box retailers, particularly Wal-Mart, are depressing wages and benefits for retail employees.

Geologic Site of the Month - September 1997
Aftermath of the 1996 Rockland Landslide
Early in the morning of April 16, 1996, a steep bluff along the north shore of Rockland Harbor slumped toward the ocean. Slumping of the bluff occurred progressively in a series of discrete landslide events. Most of the initial motion occurred between 1:15 AM and about 4:00 AM during a falling tide immediately preceding a new moon, but well before a heavy rain on the afternoon of April 16. The photo at above left is an aerial photo of the slide area taken in April of 1996. Before the landslide, the bluff top was about 50 feet above sea level and the base of the bluff ended at the high water mark. During the initial slumping events, portions of two houses collapsed into the main body of the landslide (see photo at above right). These structures were about 75 feet landward of the top edge of the bluff prior to the landslide. A topographic survey by geologists from the MGS and the University of Maine determined that by the next week the slide displaced more than half an acre of the original bluff top. When it was over, the slide had moved horizontally over 400 feet onto the mudflats of the intertidal zone and had disturbed a total area of 3.5 acres. For a month following the initial slide, smaller blocks continued to fall from the steep landward slopes. These continued slope failures resulted in the enlargement of the affected area by landward progression of the vertical scarp. This progression moved the main scarp to within 15 feet of a sewer main on the seaward side of the road. Possible disruption of a city water main buried beneath the landward shoulder of the road was also of public concern.

Maine Study Finds Locally Owned Businesses Better for Local Economy October 08, 2003 According to a recent study conducted by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR), a national nonprofit organization providing policy solutions for building strong local economies and sustainable communities, and Friends of Midcoast Maine, a regional grassroots organization supporting smart growth, three times as much money stays in the local economy when consumers buy goods and services from locally owned businesses compared to chain stores. The conclusions of this study, which tracked the revenue and expenditures of eight locally owned businesses in three Maine towns, are similar to those of an earlier study conducted in Austin, Texas, by Civic Economics for the local community organization Liveable City. (To read the full Civic Economics report, click here
According to David Morris, vice-president of ILSR, studies such as the one in Midcoast Maine refute the argument that bringing in major chain stores and big box retailers creates jobs locally. He told BTW , "We want to put that argument to the test. Our findings are that more jobs are created locally and the economy is healthier if you don't bring in chains. One should track the dollars spent. It's not enough to say, 'I might save two percent on purchases [at a chain store],' it matters just as much what the direction and dynamics of the money are."

How Can You Adapt This Project?
This project can be adapted in a few ways:
  • Use the format that is here to create your own WebQuests about other Maine topics.
  • Use the format that is here to create your own Virtual Field Trips about other Maine topics.
  • Use the format here to create an online unit of study in a different discipline. Teachers are free to use this site for the content that is already here. If you would like to create new WebQuests to be added to our site, please follow the format that is used here and email it to Michael Arsenault . Your WebQuests should follow the format originally developed by Bernie Dodge at San Diego State University by including an introduction, proceedure, task, evaluation, and conclusion. To learn more about WebQuests check out: As the number of WebQuests on this site increases we will list them by topic. Some of the topics we will be looking to cover are:
    • Maine Historical Landmarks
    • Famous Mainers
    • Maine Artists and Art Done in Maine
    • Indian Tribes of Maine
    • Maine Cities and Towns
These WebQuests naturally lend themselves to a Virtual Field Trip. We would love to be able to share the work you and your students do with our students and others around the State of Maine! We used iMovie, which comes free with any Macintosh computer, on an iMac to produce our movies. To include video of your students on location you'll need a digital camcorder. Movies can also be made with only still images and audio. Starting in the fall of 2002 all Maine middle schools will have Apple iBook computers. This will provide the resources to use iMovie for all Maine middle schools. We recommend use of an external microphone with your camcorder and a digital camera. Please follow the compression settings shown below for optimal viewing over the Internet with a Quicktime Streaming Server. If you are not using a Quicktime Streaming Server, the Web Movie, Small setting works great.
