State Energy Program (SEP) Special Project, Maine, 2004 The Maine Clean Communities Coalition Support project will enable the coalition to pursue its primary goals of increasing alternative fuel vehicles in the state and reducing Maine's dependence on petroleum for transportation. Activities that will support this effort include organizing at least one Advancing the Choice event for school buses, tracking alternative fuel prices and status of infrastructure throughout the state, organizing and hosting stakeholder meetings, attending official Clean Cities events, meeting with local and state officials, and developing a plan for coalition sustainability. Other team members include Mermaid Transportation, Frontier Energy, and Maine Clean Communities.

Maine Clean Cities School Buses
State Energy Program (SEP) Special Project, Maine, 2004 The Maine Departments of Environmental Protection and Education and the Maine Clean Communities seek $96,853 for the incremental cost of three compressed natural gas (CNG) school buses for the City of Portland's Public School system (PPS). The METRO, Portland's public transportation system, has received funding from Clean Cities, the Maine Department of Transportation, and a congressional earmark to build a CNG fueling station and maintenance facility in Portland. The fueling facility will be operational within the next 12 months, be publicly accessible, and have ample capacity to fuel all METRO's buses and numerous additional vehicles. Total load for the fueling infrastructure, once all METRO and other fleet vehicles are in operation, will be in excess of 180,000 scf per day. This will be Maine's first CNG fueling station, so it is critical to provide sufficient load early on to spur development of future infrastructure in the region. By using the METRO facility, Portland's school buses will contribute to a sustainable alternative fuel market through a public and private Clean Cities partnership. School buses purchased with DOE funds will display a Clean Cities decal to increase awareness and acceptance of alternative fuels in the community.

REVISED
A Guide to Native American Studies Programs
in the United States and Canada
Robert M. Nelson, Editor
Ten years ago, in the Fall of 1993, the Association for the Study of American Literatures published a 30-page guide to Native American Studies programs in the U.S., compiled and edited by former ASAIL President Franchot Ballinger. This new Guide to Native American Studies Programs in the United States and Canada represents an attempt to update and expand upon Professor Ballinger's pioneering work. In accordance with a 1995 ASAIL resolution, it is being published both in hardcopy form and in electronic form, so as to be available not only to ASAIL members but also to non-members, compliments of the Association. I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of two SAIL Editorial Assistants, Amy Davidson (1995-96) and Corrie Anderson (1996-97), who in addition to their other duties put in many hours of overtime gathering and regathering, collating and recollating information from a variety of sources including questionnaires, follow-up letters and phone calls, and worldwide websites. Thanks also to Karen Strom at University of Massachusetts, who read the final draft of this guide and provided or corrected many of the URL addresses for program websites. Our dream was to provide a comprehensive survey of U.S. and Canadian Native American Studies programs being offered as majors, minors, and certifications at the baccalaureate level or above, using (with some slight modifications and additions) Professor Ballinger's earlier categories of information on each program. And although we have made a considerable effort to locate, contact, and acquire information about Native American Studies programs (by whatever title: Native American Studies and American Indian Studies are the most common designations, though there are others) at all North American baccalaureate-granting institutions, readers should keep in mind that the

By Popular Demand: Maine Turns to PAYT
"We were a bit surprised that people were talking about it,” said Sam Morris, senior planner at Maine’s State Planning Office. “We weren’t expecting residents to be this supportive of PAYT, especially when they raised issues like the program’s greater fairness and its environmental benefits. They were talking about the future—about their children—when they decided to speak up.” But one of the driving forces was the interest and, often, enthusiasm of neighbors in Maine to adopt a program that they saw as both greener and fairer. Morris explained that his office was often asked by local boards of selectmen or city councils to attend local hearings or town meetings where a proposed PAYT program was under discussion. Anticipating that residents might at first react negatively to the idea of paying directly for their trash, he expected at these meetings to have to lay out all the reasons why PAYT was better for both residents and the community as a whole. Instead, Morris often found people standing up immediately to voice their support for a program that they saw was likely to increase recycling amounts.

Maine - A State Unit Study This mini unit on MAINE uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study MAINE. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child's needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about ALABAMA and enjoyable for all who are participating. Maine's State Flag The state coat of arms is placed on a blue field. In the center of the shield a moose rests under a tall pine tree. A farmer and seaman represents the work that people did in early times. The North Star represents the state motto: "Dirigo". ("I Direct" ) Flag adopted 1909. Create a State "Infodesk": Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.
