The districts were numbered 1-2-3-4-5, etc. and as the town became more populated, more districts were added until there were thirteen.....from 1817 to 1876. I don’t believe that I will be able to pin-point these schoolhouses in the exact spot. In district No. 1.....known as the South Ridge District there was a one room schoolhouse across the road from the Dexter Airport that was built about 1824. The first schoolhouse in Dexter was built in 1812 on the Upper Garland Road. District No. 2, known as the Carr’s Corner District was built in 1812. Located about one half mile from the site of the Dexter dump on the right side of the road overlooking Puffer’s Pond, now Echo Lake. There is a metal marker showing the exact spot of the schoolhouse. It re- mained at this location until 1819. The townfolks decided to move it down the road a short distance but it got stuck in the mud west of Carr’s Corner and there it stayed until 1845. A new schoolhouse was built further down the road around the corner and it stood at this location until 1998. It was then donated to the Dexter Historical Museum and moved next to the Millers House near the Museum. District No. 3.....known as the Cooledge District. A schoolhouse was built in 1821 on the Charleston Road and remained at this location many years and then abandoned and a new one was built a short distance east of the original one.

Boarding Schools - Military Schools Discipline
There are signs that the military ethos can accomplish things not easily achieved otherwise. Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots. There, members of Alpha Company that's all the girls are scrutinized for signs of excessive grooming. Sparkle nail polish and heavy makeup are banned. Hair must be tied neatly into military buns or cut above the collar.

Alternative Schools Education
With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind. Many parents with troubled teens think that the structure and discipline taught in military boarding schools is just what their child needs, but there are actually

Improving Mental Health Services
for ALL NJ Kids
Reprinted with permission by Cynthia Burns,
Kids Magazine , October 11-24, 1999 The New Jersey Parents’ Caucus’ vision statement is one that any parent would embrace… celebrate the potential of ALL children to become loving, responsible, contributing adults. Katherine Wagner, chairperson, says it’s intentional for ALL to be capitalized. The organization’s members have dealt with the anguish of raising emotionally disturbed children. These parents could easily concentrate on issue specific to their children’s needs. They purposely aim for the general good. “Almost all the families had issues in pre-K, nursery school and kindergarten,” notes Wagner. “There were problems on the playground or the teacher reported incidents. The range of behaviors of our members’ children is wide. Most of the children have needed major intervention. We realize we have a stake in the well-being of all children. “We have a unique perspective on what works for the mental health of youth and families,” she says. “We want to influence policy to change the systems in place and to bring about change that works in life.” One of the group’s goals is to increase the integration of children’s services provided by the state’s various departments and divisions for greater effectiveness and cost-effectiveness and to emphasize primary and secondary prevention.

This old, brick building on the University of Minnesota campus in Morris is all that's left of an Indian boarding school built in the 1880s. The boarding school was here long before the land was used for a university campus. Today the building houses the Multi-Ethnic Resources Center. (MPR Photo/Tim Post) There's an old brick building at the University of Minnesota, Morris that serves as a reminder of campus history. According to a historical marker out front, long before there was a university here, this land housed an Indian boarding school.

At the point where Cony and Stone streets intersect at Cony circle, the flatiron building of present-day Cony High school sits. This site was the second location of the Cony Female Academy and the location of the Free Cony High School, built in1881. Present-day Cony High School sits on the site that served many generations of Augusta students: the Cony Female Academy was here from 1844/45 to 1857 and Cony Free High School was built here in 1881. After the Female Academy closed, the resources (location and endowment) were used to help establish Cony Free High School in 1881. The ornate Queen Anne building was demolished in the 1920's to make way for the current structure, which the city decided to undertake in 1926. Construction stretched over a number of years and the current building was completed in 1929/30, then dedicated in November of 1930.

Public and Private School Collaboration
Public and Private School Collaboration. A program for students in grades 10 and 11; the Connecticut Scholars Program. A collaboration for the purpose of providing an opportunity for advanced residential study for academically promising urban school students. Description Public Private School Collaboration makes connections and makes connections work. Where public and private schools have not traditionally joined forces, they do so within a collaborative framework. This allows them to apply their finest resources to meet significant needs. It also allows them to gain the support of leading corporations and foundations as well as research institutions and museums as they seek to respond to those needs. Importantly, a collaboration does not have to involve a boarding school, urban schools, or huge foundation grants. It does require the full participation of public and private school partners, definition of genuine need, and the commitment to work together to find and apply resources to meet that need. After three and a half years, adoptions are now under way from Maine to California. They can be found in boarding schools, urban public high schools, day schools, elementary schools, and more. Winston Churchill once said that opportunity seeks not a "seat but a springboard." That is just what this program supplies.

I am only just waking up from the violence and spiritual/ physical and sexual oppression that can only be brought clarity/understood or invoked by combining in ones head what is going on now at Abu Grabe Prison in Iraq and the first five minutes of the movie “Rabbit Proof Fence”; showing the removal of part White part Aboriginal children from their parents in Australia in an attempt to educate them and selectively breed them back into the white population (the film shows their first days in boarding school not far from my first days at Dorset House).
I witnessed violent abuse and beatings on my body and on the body of others, homosexual and sexual acts performed on me by staff and other boys, racism public humiliation and spiritual degradation and mental torture in both these schools.
