All undergraduate students, from any department or on any programme, who register for a CS course must join the mail list for the course. They are required to read email sent to them. All mail sent to course lists is also copied to newsgroups at IS as a backup measure in case students do not wish to keep email, or join the course late. For the convenience of students with accounts in the CS department, the mail is also copied to local bulletin boards (readable by "bbc xxxx" where xxx is the course code, eg 3C36). In the case of a dispute over what students have been told the newsgroups will be definitive. Thus students are expected to be able to read newsgroups, and instructions on how to do this are given below.

Policy for Establishing Mailing Lists at Queen's University
Listserv Policy for Establishing Mailing Lists ITServices provides Listserv Mailing List Services to faculty and continuing staff at Queen's University in support of Education, Research and Teaching. ITServices does not provide Mailing List Services to students, student organizations or clubs, or to members of the Internet community. ITServices has a responsibility to ensure these resources are being used responsibly, and must be in a position to take immediate corrective action should a problem occur. ITServices will support LISTSERV based mailing lists that meet the following criteria:
  • A Queen's faculty or continuing staff member is designated as the List Owner and assumes ownership and responsibility for the operation of the list. Primary List Owner e-mail addresses must belong to a real person and are not generic e-mail accounts.
As the designated List Owner you will:
    • Add and Delete list members and track down address changes.
    • Where appropriate, inform list members of appropriate e-mail conduct, how to contact you as the List Owner (via a Welcome message) and enforce mailing list or posting policies.

The AIBS/NCSE Evolution List Server Network
AIBS conducts a number of activities to support the teaching of evolution in schools and to ward off efforts to teach creationism in science classes or distort the teaching of evolution. One of these AIBS activities is a joint project with the National Center for Science Education ( www.ncseweb.org ) to establish and maintain an email list server for each U.S. state, for Canada, and for other select areas. The email list servers allow scientists, teachers, and other interested parties to be in touch with each other locally, nationally, and internationally. They can facilitate support groups for teachers trying to teach evolution in a difficult atmosphere. They can also permit rapid communications and grass-roots activity when school boards or legislatures are considering policies that will promote the teaching of anti-evolutionary ideas in science classes. Volunteers serve as list server managers. Most U.S. states now have list server managers, as does Canada. Their names and email addresses appear below, as do subscription instructions. Please subscribe! If your state has a contact person, but no list name, please write and encourage them to get their list server started. If your state does not appear on the list, that means no one has volunteered to run the list server. Please consider volunteering. The time commitment should not be burdensome. University computer center staff should be able to set up the list server for you. Contact Robert Gropp in the AIBS Public Policy Office at

    EDU-SIG: Python in Education
Python continues to make inroads at all levels in education. As a first programming language, Python provides a lucid, interactive environment in which to explore procedural, functional and object oriented approaches to problem solving. Its high level data structures and clear syntax keep the forest in view through the trees. Other, and oft times more difficult, languages become more accessible once these basics are mastered, while Python itself remains a valuable tool in more advanced professional and business applications. Because Python is both powerful by itself, and plays well with others (including with multiple operating systems) its relevance is not diminished as one's toolbox becomes more heterogenous and specialized. Edu-sig provides an informal venue for comparing notes and discussing future possibilities for Python in education. Its origins trace to Guido van Rossum's pioneering Computer Programming for Everybody (CP4E) , a grant proposal accepted by DARPA, and which provided a modicum of funding in 1999.
