Online Communities v.s. Classical Communities By Aaron Davidson - Anonymous Introduction: A common theme which neo-luddites and other technological naysayers often recite is that personal computers and more specifically the internet, are destroying communities. This is a loaded statement, so much of this paper will be spent dissecting it and determining its meaning and value, if any. There are many questions that should be raised in response to the claim that the internet is destroying communities: What kind of communities are being damaged? Is computer and internet technology to blame? What value do communities have? What kinds of communities exist online? What value do online communities have? Definition of Community I want to draw attention to the essence of what a community is. When internet critics speak of community, they refer to the definition of community as a group of people who live together in close physical proximity. I will refer to this type of community as a Classic Community. The more general essence of community is a group of people which share a common interest. This more flexible definition encompasses both physical communities as well as more intangible communities such as special interest clubs and online communities. To paraphrase U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's famous comment about defining obscenity, online communities are difficult to describe, but you know them when you see them. Institute for particle physics phenomenology Following a review of the role of the PP Theory group at CLRC, and discussions at the PPC the PPARC Executive has decided that the kind of phenomenology support which evolved at CLRC over some years should now be provided through a more closely directed research activity along the lines of an Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC). The programme, organisation, and location will be the subject of competitive peer review. CLRC will be able to bid alongside the universities. Even though cost effectiveness will be important in assessing bids, the community should note that this is not a cost cutting exercise. Scientific quality will be the prime criterion. Nor is this an exercise in "moving" RAL Theory. The PPC has advised the PPARC Executive that in whatever emerges the PP Group at CLRC will still require a level of theory support.
