82. Voice Mail Fraud - Beware
FCC Consumer Advisory. Voice mail fraud Beware fraud that allows hackersto use a consumer s or business s voice mail system and the default password
http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/voicemailfraud.html
FCC Home Search Updates E-Filing ... FCC site map Voice Mail Fraud - Beware If you don't change the default password on your voice mailbox, you, or your company, could be in for a big - and expensive - surprise. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has become aware of a new form of fraud that allows hackers to use a consumer's or business's voice mail system and the default password to make collect calls without the knowledge or permission of the consumer. The Scam Works Like This A hacker calls into a voice mail system and searches for voice mailboxes that still have the default passwords active or have passwords with easily-guessed combinations, like 1-2-3-4. (Hackers know common default passwords and are able to try out the common ones until they can break into the phone system.) The hacker then uses the password to access the phone system and to make international calls. The hacker does this by first changing the voice mailbox's outgoing greeting to something like "Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, operator, I will accept the charges." Then, the hacker places a collect call to the number they've just hacked. When the (automated) operator (which is usually programmed to "listen for" key words and phrases like "yes" or "I will accept the charges") hears the outgoing "yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, operator, I will accept the charges" message, the collect call is connected. The hacker then uses this connection for long periods of time to make other international calls.

What is e-mail fraud?
E-mail is an inexpensive and popular method for distributing fraudulent messages. Phishing is a form of e-mail fraud. First National Bank Omaha will never ask for you to verify or provide any personal or financial information within an e-mail.
How can I tell if an e-mail or other Internet activity is fraudulent?
Fraudulent e-mail will typically have a familiar company logo and resemble their Internet site. It will ask for customers to go to a provided Internet site address or click on a link to update or confirm their information. Such Internet addresses or links are typically similar to the actual company's Internet address; however, they will often have a couple of letters transposed. Never respond to e-mails, open attachments, or click on links from suspicious or unknown senders. Prosecutions of fraud ordinarily should not be undertaken if the scheme employed consists of some isolated transactions between individuals, involving minor loss to the victims, in which case the parties should be left to settle their differences by civil or criminal litigation in the state courts. Serious consideration, however, should be given to the prosecution of any scheme which in its nature is directed to defrauding a class of persons, or the general public, with a substantial pattern of conduct.

Date: Wed Feb 17 1999 - 15:31:32 PST Hi! I'm a law student at the University of Arizona. (aaaagh! chancery scenes erupt to mind!) I've been doing a paper on the history of mail fraud and I was interested to see in one history of the postal inspector's office, that Dickens published an expose of some of the more notorious English mail con artists. The author seemed to think it was in "Sketches By Boz", but the particular collection of the "Sketches" I've been able to find (on Project Gutenberg) doesn't appear to have the info in it. Can someone give me more specific information - like a title of the actual essay or a date, or alternate collections of the "Sketches" which might have this work? Thanks! Jason

Internet users must be cautious of e-mail fraud
By Justin Bankston Published: Friday, January 23, 2004 Many e-mails promise to make life easier or give large sums of money, but if it seems too good to be true, it is.
One of the most popular forms of e-mail fraud is "phishing," where scam artists will duplicate a certain Web site and use it to collect personal information from users.
James Turgal, supervisory special agent for the FBI's cyber crimes program, said the scammers "do it a lot with banking Web sites or financial Web sites."
Many of these e-mails send the recipient a notice that they have had a bad transaction with the institution. The e-mail then sends the user to another site via a link where it asks the user for their password and username.
"You've just provided someone information about your complete financial status," Turgal said. "You're not going to get unsolicited e-mail from your banking institution."

  • Mail fraud The GOP's attempt to mail Social Security guarantees turns postal workers into campaign operatives. By Ben Fritz In a new twist on the Social Security debate, some House Republicans are pushing legislation that would issue a certificate to Social Security recipients falsely claiming to guarantee that their benefits cannot be cut. This legislation takes dissembling beyond what we have come to expect from politicians, making the federal government itself just another instrument for false rhetoric. Two versions of the bill The Social Security Benefits Guarantee Act of 2001 and The Social Security Guarantee Act of 2001 are before the House, sponsored by Reps. James DeMint, R-S.D., and Walter Jones, R-N.C., respectively. Both propose the same thing: that senior citizens shall, as soon as they become eligible for Social Security, receive certificates from the secretary of the treasury guaranteeing that they will receive the Social Security benefits promised under the law and that those benefits will be indexed for inflation.

Friday, May 5, 2000 Man admits to mail fraud at inventors' service By Associated Press
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A man has admitted to mail fraud in selling marketing services to inventors. The guilty plea was entered Thursday in U.S. District Court in Springfield by Cary Bissell, 51, of Holyoke. His sentencing is set for Aug. 15. Bissell worked in sales for Westfield-based American Inventors Corp. Prosecutors said the company was part of a scam that bilked $60 million from more than 34,000 inventors around the country. Ronald Boulerice, of Russell, is named at the core of the charges. He was president of the now-closed company. The company promised to help inventors patent and market their inventions. But prosecutors say it exaggerated and misrepresented what it did. Click here for more news Click here to send this article to a friend
