Lesson Eleven: Ferdinand Magellan A Portuguese captain of intrepid spirit and tremendous abilities would achieve what Columbus set out to do: reach the Indies by sailing west. Moreover, the remnant of his fleet would continue the voyage and become the first maritime expedition to circumnavigate the globe. Ferdinand Magellan gets the credit for leading the first voyage to sail around the world—a voyage of unbelievable hardship. In the end it was a bitterly ironic achievement because Magellan was among the majority of sailors who perished en route. Nonetheless, his intrepid leadership was the driving force leading to the eventual success of the expedition, despite the fact that he himself did not survive the perils of the voyage. Magellan was a Portuguese nobleman who was orphaned as a boy. He served in India and the East in the Portuguese-controlled areas. There he developed his seamanship and along with it a desire to circumnavigate the globe, an accomplishment no one had yet come close to attaining. He wanted to do what Columbus had set out to do, travel to the

Magellan set sail for the Spice Islands on September 20, 1519. There were five ships and 265 men under his command. He took trinkets to trade with native along the way, and enough food for two years. He would not tell anyone where they were going, not even the captains. Magellan's secrecy caused problems with the captains who sailed the other ships. They didn't like being kept in the dark about Magellan's plans. This eventually lead to an unsuccessful mutiny during the voyage. On December 15, Magellan's fleet landed on the coast of Brazil. The natives that they met were friendly. The men traded trinkets for fresh fruit and meat. Magellan felt that he had converted the natives to Christianity. He liked that idea very much! They continued down the coast, looking for the strait. On January 10, 1520, they spotted a huge bay. To make sure that this was the strait, he sent his men into the bay to explore. Two weeks later, he was disappointed when his men returned, and had found a big river, but no strait. That meant that they had to keep sailing south.. When Magellan reached what is now called Port San Julian, he told the ships to drop anchor, and they spent the winter there. It was at this port that Magellan successfully stopped a mutiny. When the worst of winter was over, they once again began their search for the strait.

Ferdinand Magellan Beyond The New World: Magellan's Great Venture One autumn day in 1516, a crippled soldier knelt awkwardly before his king, Manuel I of Portugal. The sovereign gazed with some distaste at the man, one Ferdinand Magellan. In recent years superior officers with whom Magellan had dared to disagree had been circulating malicious reports about his conduct. Yet there was no denying his noble birth, his brilliant military exploits, and his unswerving loyalty to the crown. Reluctantly, King Manuel nodded for him to speak. Magellan announced that, at the age of 36, he was impoverished by eight years of navigating, exploring, and fighting battles for the crown in Africa and the Portuguese Indies. What was more, he had suffered three serious wounds in his majesty's service, including a lance wound in the knee that had left him permanently lame. He humbly begged an increase in his pension. Manuel, who was not by nature a rewarder, denied the request. Surprised and hurt, Magellan remained on his knees. Then might he be granted command of a caravel to the Indies and perhaps restore his fortunes? No, said his majesty, there was no place at all for him in Portuguese service. The humiliated soldier could make only one final request: to be allowed to serve some other king. Manuel waved him away and snorted that he did not care in the least where Magellan went or what he did. Bitterly humiliated, Magellan brooded over these harsh words for months. Gradually, he began to form a plan. For years his friend Francisco Serrano, who had settled in the Moluccas, had been urging Magellan to join him. These islands, lying just to the west of New Guinea, were also known as the Spice Islands, for they were the primary source of most of the spices that Europeans desperately coveted. And, Serrano added, the profits to be made in the spice trade were fabulous.

As Portuguese forces bore down on the expedition near the Cape Verde Islands, Del Cano was forced to continue toward Spain without supplies or rest. Finally, on September 8, 1522, The Victoria made it back to Spain with only 18 men surviving, hence completing the first circumnavigation of the world. History Games Gr. 3 + U.S.and World History

Executive summary: Circumnavigated the globe fidalgos de cota de armas Magellan returned to Portugal in 1512. On the 14th of July of that year he was raised to the rank of fidalgo escudeiro Christopher Columbus , the steady supporter of his great successor. Magellan proposed to reach the Spice Islands of the East Indies by the west; for that purpose he hoped to discover a strait at the extreme south of South America, and is said to have declared himself ready to sail southwards to 75 degrees to realize his project. Ruy Faleiro the astronomer, another Portuguese exile, aided him in the working out of his plan, and he found an invaluable financial ally in Christopher de Haro, a member of a great Antwerp firm, who owed a grudge to the King of Portugal. On the 22nd of March 1518, Magellan and Faleiro, as joint captains-general, signed an agreement with Charles V, by which one-twentieth of the clear profits were to fall to them; further, the government of any lands discovered was vested in them and their heirs, with the title of Adelantados Steering southwest and calling at Teneriffe (September 26 to October 3), Magellan sighted South America at Cape St. Augustine, near Pernambuco on the 29th of November; thence he followed the east coast of the New World down to the La Plata estuary, which he examined in the hope of finding a passage at this point (January 11 to February 6, 1520). On the 31st of March following, he arrived at Port St. Julian where he wintered. Here he crushed a formidable mutiny (April 1-2), and made acquaintance with the natives, whom he called

Ferdinand Magellan Ferdinand Magellan was born in Oporto, Portugal in 1840. He had a club foot. Some people did not like him because of his foot, they called him "the devil's spawn". He was related to King John II, of Portugal. Because he was related to the king he went to the Royal Courts. He studied mapmaking, navigation, and astronomy. When he was studying he heard about explorers and what they did and how they made lots of money and saw a lot of new places. In 1505 Magellan joined the Navy and made his first sea journey. He did not agree with all the other explorers about their routes. He thought that there was a better way to get to the Spice Islands, he thought it would be faster to go west. They finally reached land on March 28, 1521. It was not the Spice Islands, it was the Philippine Islands. Magellan got along with most of the Filipinos but one leader did not like him because he was friends with the leader's enemy. This leader fought Magellan's crew. In this battle Magellan was shot in the leg with a poison arrow and got stabbed. he died on April 27, 1521. Magellan beat Columbus's record for voyages by sailing 42,000 miles, 22,000 of those miles were where no white man had sailed before.

    TEXT VERSION
    1520 Magellan circumnavigates the globe
On Wednesday the twenty-eighth of November, one thousand five hundred and twenty, we issued forth from the said strait and entered the Pacific Sea, where we remained three months and twenty days without taking on board provisions or any other refreshments, and we ate only old biscuits turned to powder, all full of worms and stinking of the urine which the rats had made on it, having eaten the good. And we drank water impure and yellow. We ate also ox hides which were very hard because of the sun, rain, and wind. And we left them...days in the sea, then laid them for a short time on embers, and so we ate them. And of the rats, which were sold for half an ecu apiece, some of us could not get enough. Besides the aforesaid troubles, this malady [scurvy] was the worst, namely that the gums of most part of our men swelled above and met below so that they could not eat. And in this way they died, inasmuch as twenty-nine of us died...But besides those who died, twenty-five or thirty fell sick of divers maladies, whether of the arms or of the legs and other parts of the body [also effects of scurvy], so that there remained very few healthy men. Yet by the grace of our Lord I had no illness. During these three months and twenty days, we sailed in a gulf where we made a good four thousand leagues across the Pacific Sea, which was rightly so named. For during this time we had no storm, and we saw no land except two small uninhabited islands, where we found only birds and trees. Wherefore we called them the Isles of Misfortune....
