Birthin’ and Readin’
These past few months I have been thinking about literacy. For my book club last month I had the opportunity to choose the book, and decided to pick Why Johnny Can’t Read. This book is Rupert Fleischs fifty-year-old classic treatise on how to teach children to read phonetically. My book club is made up of a group of mostly young mothers with toddlers, and I introduced the book with the words, “I believe this is the most important non-fiction book that has ever been written.” I was pleased during our discussion how seriously the mothers who make up the group took the message of this book. My hope for the evening was that those who attended would leave feeling empowered to teach their own little ones to read. As our family has gone back and forth from homeschool to a variety of public school situations, I still feel strongly that the main reason one should teach their own is the reading issue. Here is a great article on the web that details the whole language/phonics fight. http://www.eagleforum.org/psr/1996/july96/psrjul96.html

(Frequently Asked Questions About Homeschooling) Q. What does it mean to homeschool?
A. Homeschooling means different things to different people. For some families, homeschooling means duplicating school at home, complete with textbooks, report cards and regularly scheduled field trips. For others, homeschooling is simply the way they live their lives - children and adults living and learning together with a seamlessness that would challenge an observer to determine which was 'home' and which was 'school.' If you think of a kind of homeschooling continuum, with 'school at home' at one end, and 'learning and living completely integrated' on the other - you would find homeschoolers scattered along that line with every possible variation of what homeschooling could mean.
Q. What are some of the benefits of homeschooling?

LESSONS TO TEACH THE NEW BABY
    by Linda Middleton
Awwww, a new baby parrot. Such sweet treasures to love and cuddle. In addition to the joy they bring us, it is our responsibility to teach them things that will help them integrate into our homes safely and happily. The excitement and anxiety of bringing home that new baby parrot is a day you will long remember. That baby parrot is going to grow up fast and will be eager to learn new things. The following is a listing and brief discussion of what I try to teach my baby parrots:
  • To step up to my hand on command and to step down on command. I use the simple words Up and Down. This training is the most important thing I can teach them. When this is learned, I consider my parrots hand trained and they are now better companions for me and more trainable for future lessons. Down is not a command my cockatoos like and is the harder command to teach. I put my hand into the legs of the baby gently pushing saying Up and they have to or they fall off. From there, they always progress to putting that foot out and stepping up readily when they mature.
  • To come when called. Parrots are not obedient and I don't expect them to be. Coming when called is not a natural thing for them to learn. But they are loving and if you teach a baby parrot to come when called to get loved, it can help you find them if they are lost. If they are ever in danger, you can call them out to safety.

Pulitzer Prize winner to join journalism department Rick Bragg
Rick Bragg will teach magazine writing in fall By Stephen Dawkins
Administrative Affairs Editor August 10, 2005
In the fall, UA journalism students will have the opportunity to take classes taught by former New York Times reporter Rick Bragg, said E. Culpepper Clark, dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences. "Obviously he brings huge name recognition as a writer," Clark said. "He is absolutely marvelous at coaching students in writing. Students will love him." While working for the Times, Bragg won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. A native of Piedmont, Bragg said he wanted to attend the University, but his single mother didn't make enough money to send him to college, and he didn't work hard enough in high school to earn a scholarship. "It's nobody's fault but mine," he said.

In 1991 I was asked to develop a course in magazine copy editing for New York University's Management Institute. I taught the course for two semesters, spring 1992 and fall 1992 (I would have gone on teaching it, but I left New York). NYU had long offered courses in copy editing and proofreading, but they were focused on practices in the book publishing business. When I started teaching the course, I had been a copy editor at Time magazine for three years. In 1993 I left Time to become a copy editor at The Washington Post . I had also worked as a copy editor in the book business (two years as an in-house copy editor at Dell Publishing and free-lance work for Doubleday and Warner Books). So I knew how magazine and book editing requirements differ. (You can find out more if you look at What follows is the syllabus for my course. I think it may be useful for anyone who wants to teach copy editing skills and also for people who are curious about jobs in publishing. The class met for two hours, once a week, for twelve weeks.

Reviewed by Susan Pendleton Jones, the United Methodist campus minister of Duke University. I have served as the pastor of four rather diverse congregations, yet in each church there has been a common occurrence. In making pastoral calls to elderly parishioners, I discovered that even those who could no longer remember their own names were always able to join me in praying the Lord's Prayer during the liturgy for Holy Communion. The phrases spilled out from the deep recesses of their memory because the prayer had been committed, not only to the mind, but also to the heart. They had prayed it every Sunday in church. Many of them prayed it each night at home with their families before going to bed. Some of them had memorized it long before they had learned to read. It is the prayer of Christians at all times and in all places; it is the prayer our Lord taught his disciples to pray as the model for all of our prayers.

Marilyn Chandler McEntyre How can churches equip kids for life in public schools? In conversation with a 16-year-old daughter some time ago, I uttered one of those standard parental sentences that started, "When I was in high school . …" She listened patiently to the end of the sentence before replying with unaccustomed seriousness, "Mom, things aren't the way they were when you were in school." This was not adolescent one-upmanship. Mary Pipher, author of Reviving Ophelia , makes the same point: most middle-class parents have very little idea of what their kids are facing when they grab their backpacks and head for school. The social world of school is more complicated for our children than it was for us. Complicated doesn't necessarily mean bad, but it does mean strenuous. Kids are expected to master complex, evolving technologies, to recognize early and often how race, class, and gender modify points of view; to look back on American history in light not only of two world wars and a depression, but of subsequent conflicts with murkier moral terms. They know they're a "target market"—the big guns of advertising are aimed directly at them. They have no choice about whether to "think globally": global trade, global warming, and global conflicts are far less remote than a generation ago. And the constraints upon public-school instructors who wish to provide moral grounding points are more rigorous now than they were 30 years ago. In many public schools, explicit reflection from the standpoint of faith is virtually prohibited in the classroom, or even in campus clubs.
