    Madagascar - Geography and history
    Geography
Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world (after Greenland, Papua New Guinea and Borneo), with 587,000km square of land (representing 0.4% of the land surface of the planet) is situated in the Indian Ocean 250km off the eastern coast of Africa opposite Mozambique separated by the Mozambique Channel. The island separated from mainland Africa approximately 160 million years ago leaving Madagascar to develop independantly, creating an environmental ratio of non-endemic to endemic species of 1:0.28 making this island a hotspot of biological importance. The island has over 5000km of coastline with a continental shelf area of 117,000km sq giving Madagascar the most extensive brackish water, shallow marine and continental shelf habitat in the Indian ocean after India. Madagascar spans almost 14 degrees of latitude with the majority of the island's coastline having a tropical climate, inner regions having a temperate climate and an arid southern region. This factor gives the island a greater degree of diversity of marine habitats and biota the any other Indian Ocean country.

Geography Lac Alaotra lies in the north of Ambatondrazaka (about 250 km north-east of the capital Antananarivo). It is the biggest fresh water lake of Madagascar with a minimum surface area of 22,000 ha of open water. The lake lies in a fosse and is bound by two faults in the crystalline basement, which contains fresh water. The location of its centre point is 17º28'21"S and 48º31'40"E at an altitude of 750 m. The lake is very shallow, fluctuating between 1 and 4 m in depth, and is surrounded by up to 80,000 ha of inundated marsh and irrigated rice fields (especially in the southern and western part).
The climate is tropical semi-humid and is characterized by two alternating seasons. A dry season with moderate temperatures in May - November, and a wet season with elevated temperatures in December - April. The annual precipitation is between 1000 and 4000 mm. An important environmental factor is the high frequency of cyclones passing through this region, especially during mid-January and mid-March, when winds with high speeds reaching 300 km/h and precipitation of 600-700 mm within a few days cause dramatic changes.

During 1992-93, free presidential and National Assembly elections were held, ending 17 years of single-party rule. In 1997, in the second presidential race, Didier RATSIRAKA, the leader during the 1970s and 1980s, was returned to the presidency. The 2001 presidential election was contested between the followers of Didier RATSIRAKA and Marc RAVALOMANANA, nearly causing secession of half of the country. A Closer Look at Madagascar The Perspectives on the Physical Geography By: Susan This is what the entire continent of Africa looks like for those of you out there who haven't seen a map of Africa before. Madagascar (a.k.a. The Great Red Island ) is the biggest island off to the east of the continent, shown with an arrow. The capital city of Madagascar is Antananarivo This island is larger than California and Oregon combined. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, coming in after Greenland, New Guinea and Borneo. The island itself is located 250 miles away from Africa. This causes the island to be very unique because a lot of the wildlife and landforms are only found on Madagascar and no where else in the world. Location is KEY for Madagascar! This map is from the CIA web site Being that Madagascar is 1,000 miles long and as wide as 360 miles in certain places, this gives the island lots of room to be diverse. First of all, Madagascar is in no way symmetrical. Down the middle of the island are Highlands that sort of split the island into two regions. The West coast is much more hilly, less steep and is comprised of sedimentary rocks; as opposed to the East coast, which is very steep, rocky and is comprised of mostly crystalline rocks. These rocks are what give the island its unique shape and texture. Some historians believe that Madagascar broke away from Africa millions of years ago, this is because they found the same rock types on Africa as they did on Madagascar. They also believe that these Highlands were formed from ancient volcanic activity, which could account for the unevenness of the island.
