A DANGEROUS DIET? "Macrobiotics is a dangerous fad diet which, in certain cases, can lead to death." The above statement comes from a nutrition textbook. Many doctors, nutritionists and dieticians learnt in their nutrition studies that macrobiotics is dangerous. And so, understandably, they cling to this view without making much effort to find out the truth about macrobiotics - and the background as to how this view arose in the first place. As a result, followers of macrobiotics - especially those with cancer and other serious illnesses - are often warned by their doctors and other medical professionals that "macrobiotics is dangerous". This idea arose during the 1950s and early 1960s, when macrobiotics was first introduced to the West from Japan.

http://www.goldminenaturalfood.com/Macrobiotics.htm
WHAT IS MACROBIOTICS? "Macrobiotic" comes from the Greek; "macro" means great or long, and "bio" means life. "Macrobiotics" refers to a way of living that is in harmony with the natural order of the universe, based on the ancient concept of Tao. It’s a tool that teaches us to be flexible, to live with the continually changing nature of things, to balance the expanding and contracting forces of yin and yang. The macrobiotic approach to diet emphasizes whole grains and fresh vegetables. To choose what foods work best for you, consider these factors: What types of foods did your ancestors eat? (Note: Most traditional cultures’ staple diet consisted of grains and beans, with local, seasonal vegetables and fruits, occasional animal food, and fermented or pickled foods.) Consider your age, gender, condition, and lifestyle. For example, children have different nutritional needs from adults because they are growing. A person with an active lifestyle has different requirements than someone who is more sedentary. Where do you live and what is the season? Whether you’re in a cold climate or a hot one, you’ll want to eat seasonal foods that are appropriate to your climate. Then you won’t be too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter.

http://www.9starki.com/shiawase.htm
Macrobiotics- A Brief History
The Macrobiotic Way is a school of thought and action, based upon the use of natural (non-synthetic) materials in our fabrics, our homes and our food. Even many naturally occurring ingredients can be hazardous to our health (e.g. hemlock, opium, sodium, lead); therefore, to determine the correct applications for natural materials, they are classified in accordance with the "Unique Principle". The Unique Principle was introduced to the Western world by George Ohsawa (Yukikazu Sakurazawa), a Japanese businessman, teacher and writer. As a teenager, Ohsawa was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was deemed to have little chance of surviving, by the Japanese medical doctors. However, by following the teaching of Sagen Ishizuka, a natural healer who was famous in Japan near the beginning of the 20th century, Ohsawa was able to heal himself. He traveled from Japan to Europe in 1929 and, soon thereafter, began teaching the Unique Principle. The "Principle", itself, employs the ancient oriental practice of Yin and Yang theory, to determine the quality of the materials in our universe. Though all aspects of the environment are important in the macrobiotic way of thinking, there is a special emphasis on food. This is because the food we eat becomes our bodies. Food turns into us. Therefore, special attention is paid to the quality of that portion of the environment which we consume. All things, including food, can be classified into a "more yin" or a "more yang" category. Generally speaking, yin (pronounced 'yeen') foods tend to be more sugary and/or watery and/or cold and/or tropical in origin. Yang (pronounced 'yahn') foods tend to be more meaty and/or dry and/or cooked and/or polar, in nature.

Macrobiotics A dietary wellness system based on whole grains, vegetables, and fish. According to practitioners, the macrobiotic way of life is holistic, taking into account all aspects of human life, and acknowledging the inter-relationship between body, mind, and spirit. Their philosophy states that, through the practice of the macrobiotic way of life, responsibility is taken for our health and actions, and that the choices we make, even seemingly simple ones such as which foods to eat, and what cleaning and body-care products to use, affect the world to a much larger degree than many people realize. The Macrobiotic view also takes into account various other factors such as heritage, climate, season, age, and sex. Each person is unique, and therefore needs to make different choices to balance their present needs. As we continue to practice macrobiotics, our needs and some of our circumstances change, thus necessitating other adjustments to our food and lifestyle. See Alternative Medicine Related videos

15:09:58 GMT, Fri, Sep 23, 2005 MACROBIOTICS - This Japanese philosophy is known in the West by its dietary principles and practice of whole foods cooked in a prescribed way, and in accord with required combinations. High fiber is generally accepted as a tenet, based on organically grown food. This philosophy is a commitment to a particular regime that involves many considerations that are brought into balance. Including, being aware of our own individual part that we play in this physical world, and accordingly achieve a broader, fuller sense of Self in relation to the Whole. Balance is encouraged within ourselves, with the food the body imbibes, and with the world. In this way a synchrony between these diverse elements is established, resulting in a unified way of living. Most importantly, a synchrony is established between the practitioner and the food....from the Glossary at HealersOfTheWorld.com

Macrobiotics 30 years of a semi-macrobiotic lifestyle
Of all the body-mind-spirit interests, enthusiasms and obsessions I have had over the years, macrobiotics has probably made the biggest impact. My initial encounter with it through a rather extreme paperback book in 1975 was the beginning of a journey of personal transformation that continues to this day. That first book I read talked about (amongst other things) personal freedom, universal compassion, everyday eating as preventative medicine, living long and happily and embracing misfortune, having all your dreams come true, regular sex until an old age, yin and yang in all of life and applied to the cooking of whole grains and vegetables. In retrospect rather curiously for a 14 year old, I was hooked and immediately began experimenting with the ideas and recipes in the book. My father and stepmother had to put up with rather a lot as I began my first culinary experiments, including burnt saucepans and flatulence! Both these problems were gradually resolved...

A Guide for the Perplexed
by Charles W. Moore Modern macrobiotics dates from the late 19th century, when a Western-trained Japanese Army doctor named Sagen Ishizuka became frustrated by allopathic medicine's ineffectiveness treating his own chronic illness. He researched traditional Oriental medicine, and developed a therapy he called shoku-yo Although shoku-yo/macrobiotics incorporates certain cosmological concepts common to several Eastern religions, it is not and never was religious in nature. Ohsawa's incorporation of Zen in the title of his first English-language book in 1960 caused no end of misunderstanding, but the prosaic truth is that he was attempting to coat-tail popular interest in Zen Buddhism on U.S. college campuses at the time. Serious Buddhists were not amused. In North America the two main schools of macrobiotics are based in Massachusetts and California respectively. The west coasters tend to be laid-back and intuitive in their approach, while the larger, eastern faction, led by Mr. Kushi, is more systematic and formulaic, although these are broad generalizations. The late George Ohsawa would no doubt be pleased, since his vision of macrobiotics was as a philosophic approach to eating, healing, and living, rather than a rigid orthodoxy. The macrobiotic view is that eating proper varieties and proportions of foods helps us achieve balance and harmony. Therefore, appropriate food choices depend on variables like an individual's health, age, sex, geographic location, physical activity, ancestry, the season, etc. Theoretically, there are as many definitions of a macrobiotic diet as there are people practicing it.

Macrobiotics
Macrobiotics is an all encompassing philosophy of living that uses diet as a primary focus. The macrobiotic understanding has its roots in Oriental philosophy such as Taoism and Chinese Medicine and advocates living in harmony with nature, especially through eating natural foods. Originally from Japan, there is a noticeable Japanese influence on the way macrobiotics is currently being taught and practiced. Yet, the philosophy of macrobiotics includes encompassing principles that apply to all cultures. Macrobiotics is a complete philosophy of life. Macrobiotics teaches principles of endless change, complimentary opposites, and a universal order, as understood by ancient and modern philosophers. Balance is a primary principle, the wisdom of unity and harmony between seemingly conflicting differences. In regards to diet, where veganism and vegetarianism are merely concerned with not eating various animal products, the macrobiotic philosophy actually discusses what to eat , including the quality of food, cooking methods, cooking equipment, and even covers proper chewing.

Macrobiotics is one of the many alternative diets that has gained popularity in the United States over the last couple decades. Michio Kushi introduced macrobiotics to New York City in the 1970's. Proponents of macrobiotics contend that it is not merely a diet, but a philosophy that, if properly observed, will ensure emotional, physical, spiritual and mental well-being. Good physical health is necessary before emotional, physical and spiritual wellness can be cultivated. See Foundation for the Macrobiotic Way The Alchemycal Pages
Scientific Analysis
There is extensive proof that a macrobiotic diet does not promote optimal physical health. Strict adherence to a macrobiotic diet has even been linked with malnutrition and stunted growth. A study in the Netherlands examined the growth in height and weight of children aged 0-8 who were fed on macrobiotic diets. In families consuming dairy products three times a week or more (12 of 173 macrobiotic families) the average birth weight after adjustment for sex, parity, height of parents averaged, and smoking, was 350g higher than in families that consumed dairy products less than once per month (43 of n=173). In families consuming fish at least once per week (40 of n=173) adjusted birth weight was 180g higher than in families consuming fish less than once per month (24 of n=173). Thus, birth weight shows a strong positive relationship to the consumption frequency of dairy products and fish which are restricted in a macrobiotic diet (Dagnelie et al., 1988).
