What Is It? Macrobiotics is a philosophy embracing the idea that living one's life within the natural order will ultimately lead to good health, happiness, and an enhanced appreciation for the constantly changing nature of all things. It is based on the ancient Chinese principles of yin and yang, which represent opposite yet complementary forces believed to exist in all aspects of life and the universe. Things that are yin are flexible, fluid, and cool; things that are yang are strong, dynamic, and hot. According to macrobiotic theory, illness is the result of an imbalance in these two forces. Therefore, macrobiotic practitioners attempt to treat ailments by bringing yin and yang back into balance through diet and lifestyle changes. Although the origins of macrobiotics stem from the ancient principles of Eastern medicine, the contemporary basis for it was developed in the late 19th century by a Western-trained Japanese Army doctor named Sagen Ishizuka (1850-1910). Dr. Ishizuka had become frustrated with allopathic (or Western) medicine's ineffectiveness in treating his own cancer, and he decided to try to cure himself by adopting a diet of brown rice, soybeans, fish, miso soup (made with soybean paste), sea vegetables, and other Oriental foods. He called this therapy shoku-yo

"After studying the literature and other available information, the American Cancer Society has found no evidence that macrobiotic diet is useful as a cure for cancer in humans. Lacking such evidence, the American Cancer Society strongly urges individuals with cancer not to use a dietary program as an exclusive or primary means of treatment." (CA 1993)

A Kushi Seminar for Professionals (1989)
Jack Raso, M.S., R.D. Laying on that stainless steel table and getting these little lines drawn on me, I felt like a piece of beef. I felt like I had no control, when they were getting ready to do radiation. And the chemo. I went . . . to see the oncologist, and seeing the other people in the waiting room, [I wondered], 'Man, is that what I'm going to be looking like?' I mean, they didn't look well. They did not look healthy. . . . If I had done chemo and radiation, I know for a fact I wouldn't be sitting here and having energy with you right now. The speaker, whom I shall call John, was a tall, thin, youthful macrobiotic convert in his late forties who said he used to run about four to five miles a day. He was driving me to the Kushi Institute in Becket, Massachusetts, to attend the Michio Kushi Seminar for Medical Professionals on June 20-25, 1989. John said his cancer had been diagnosed in November 1988. A week later, friends gave him two books whose authors said they had recovered from cancer while following a macrobiotic regimen. Two days later, after reading the books, John flew to Massachusetts for a consultation with Michio Kushi. I asked what Kushi had done. John responded:

Introduction What is Macrobiotics?
The roots of Macrobiotics can be found in ancient cultures and can be seen in the teachings of Buddhism, The Old and New Testament, Taoism, and other great spiritual movements. The focus of these teachings was the principle that God, Nature, the Universe, and all aspects of creation are One.
Modern Macrobiotics was spread throughout the world by George Ohsawa who called this way of thinking "the Unifying Principle". Its application in daily life, through a simple diet based on whole grains, he called "Macrobiotics".
The Seven Principles of the Infinite Universe.
  • Everything is a differentiation of one Infinity.
  • Everything changes.
  • All antagonisms are complementary.
  • There is nothing identical.
  • What has a front (i.e. visible side) has a back (i.e. invisible side).
  • The bigger the front, the bigger the back.
  • What has a beginning has an end. After Oshawa died in 1966, four of his disciples, Michio and Aveline Kushi, and Herman and Cornellia Aihara, promoted Ohsawa’s theories to the West, adapting them to Western conditions.
To put things simply, Macrobiotics is about establishing and maintaining balance in all aspects of our lives by living in accordance with the laws of Nature. These laws are referred to in the context of One Infinity - the interplay of

Macrobiotics Founder Dies of Cancer at 78
Aveline Kushi, a leader of the health food movement who helped found one of the nation's first natural food stores, has died following a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 78. With her husband, Michio, the Japanese-born Kushi was a leading proponent of alternative medicine and of macrobiotics, the belief that eating a mostly vegetarian diet of organic grains and produce, affects far more than physical health Practitioners believe that eating meat and processed foods contributes to aggression and disharmony not only in individuals, but in whole societies, undermining prospects for world peace. Kushi was diagnosed with cancer of the cervix about nine years ago.

    What is Macrobiotics? Macrobiotics
is a way of living with respect for the physical, biological, emotional, mental, ecological and spiritual order of our daily lives. Beginning with a reorientation of everyday eating, using whole natural foods of highest quality and simple more traditional methods of preparation. Macrobiotic living means striving to learn the art of balance in everything we do. The Macrobiotic idea places special emphasis on conscious diet because regulating your daily eating and drinking is the most basic, practical way to change your own life condition. The food you eat becomes your blood, affecting the quality of your cells, tissues organs and your mind. Properly nourished, your body, heart and mind can more easily cleanse and renew themselves. This can be a wonderful experience, and an opportunity to learn more about yourself and the process of natural healing. Macrobiotics is a revival of eating the simple, natural foods that sustained and vitalised our ancestors. It includes the commonsense principles of eating foods that grow in your climatic zone, eating fresh foods in their seasons, and preparing foods thoughtfully to enhance their nutritional content and digestibility.

The term "macrobiotic" describes a holistic lifestyle which seeks to empower people to take control of their lives and to educate them to make healthy lifestyle choices and decisions. It empowers individuals to establish awareness, health, and harmony in their lives, personal relationships, communities, and environment.
Macrobiotics is a holistic philosophy that aims to achieve balance and peace in people's lives through awareness and common sense living. Common sense living includes getting enough rest, eating the way nature intended, being kind and respectful towards oneself and others, and respecting the environment.
Macrobiotics is now popularly known for and has been well-publicized for its success in curing disease, most notably cancer . While a very strict version of the macrobiotic diet can eliminate many cancers, a more varied diet based on whole grains, vegetables, beans, and other organic natural foods is recommended by most macrobiotic practitioners. By eating the way nature intended, you not only support the ecosystem, but also enhance your own health. To test this yourself, read our

Macrobiotics The following explanation is excerpted from Pocket Guide to Macrobiotics by Carl Ferré.
Macrobiotics as it is known today is the result of the tireless work and vision of George Ohsawa (1893-1966). . . . While macrobiotic principles can be applied to all areas of life, . . . the macrobiotic approach to diet emphasizes whole grains and fresh vegetables, and for the most part avoids meat, dairy foods, and processed foods. The goal is to provide the body with essential nutrients so that it can function efficiently without loading it with toxins or excesses that must be eliminated or stored. And since the body is always adjusting to changes in the environment and to aging, its needs will always change as well. The idea is to continually balance the effects of foods eaten and other influences on the body, largely through diet, and to adjust to changes in a controlled and peaceful manner.
Very few people can make such a radical shift overnight. Instead, most people learn macrobiotics in stages. . . .

Followers of macrobiotics believe that food, and food quality, affects our lives more than is commonly thought. It is thought to affect our health, well being and happiness. If you've ever wondered "What the heck is macrobiotics?" you've come to the right place. My goal in writing The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics was to answer that question for all the hip chicks who have heard about this strange diet, but need to get the nitty gritty. Whole foods, cooked certain ways, will strengthen every cell of your body. And where your body goes, so go your heart, mind and spirit. I believe to be hip is not about the clothes you wear, or the parties you attend (although I love that stuff). I believe that true hipness comes from a deep desire to be totally free, ridiculously alive, and pathetically endorphin-addled. The highest degree of hip comes from the ability to go into the kitchen and come out a stronger, saner, more beautiful person. You have MUCH more power than you know. It's time to get hip to it.
