About the Operating System Sucks-Rules-O-Meter This operating system quality and approval metric is based on a periodic AltaVista search for each of several operating systems, directly followed by "sucks", "rules", or "rocks". We search for all operating system names exactly as shown above, with the exceptions of Mac OS , Mac OS X, and VMS. For Mac OS, we add the search results for the incorrect but common spelling "MacOS". Because Mac OS X is sometimes abbreviated to simply "OS X", the Mac OS X search is just for "OS X" we have not found other instances of this term on the web, so we can use it without confusion. For VMS, we add the results for "OpenVMS". We do not search for any derogatory slang misspellings of any operating system name. Subscribe to the srom-announce mailing list to receive announcements about changes to this site. Sucks-Rules-O-Meter technology is used in this report for The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) (The views and conclusions contained in the document are those of the author and should not be interpreted as representing the official policies, either expressed or implied, of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or the U.S. Government.)

How You Can Support the Night Owl
Even though we accept ads, the income is never sufficient to cover the expenses involved in keeping the Night Owl alive. So we are asking you to send your donations to help make up the large gap between what we need and what we receive. All we ask is that you donate what you want, when you want. How much? That's up to you, of course, and we appreciate your generosity regardless of how much you send. The easiest way to send a donation is via PayPal (use the link below). If you prefer to send us a check or money order directly, please make it payable to Making The Impossible, Inc. and send it to: Making The Impossible, Inc., 15111 N. Hayden Rd., Suite 160-144, Scottsdale, AZ 85260. A special thank you for those of you who have already sent your donations. Your generosity will not be forgotten.
The New Macs that Never Arrived
Now don't take me too seriously here, but sometimes you wonder whether Apple really makes computers anymore. I mean, the biggest news so far this month could be described in two words: iPod nano. That, the iTunes 5 upgrade (and the fixer-upper 5.0.1 release) and a revised .Mac cover most of Apple's new products. Oh yes, there was a minor Xserve and Xserve RAID update to expand drive capacity, which is hardly worth a second look unless you're a systems administrator.

Italian Version Here is some software I found useful on Mac OS X, mostly UNIX / server type packages. By popular request, I have created a PayPal account to which you can donate using a credit card. I want to make it clear that there is no obligation to pay anything. The software and information on this site is and will continue to be absolutely free. I am just offering this because so many people have specifically and repeatedly asked for it. Any money donated to this PayPal account will be used exclusively to pay for my ADSL leased line and commercial hosting account expenses (currently about US$ 190.- per month), thereby directly supporting this web site. Any excess money will be donated to Amnesty International to support their efforts to protect human rights worldwide. I played around with cafepress for fun, you can buy some entropy.ch logo merchandise there.

There are two kinds of packages here: Other people’s Open Source software which I am building and packaging for convenient installation on Mac OS X, and some software written by me, mostly for Mac OS X but not exclusively. Ubuntu Linux, Yellowdog Linux and Mac OS X, all on one PowerBook?
In a bit of a break from business analysis, I thought it would be fun to post one of my more technical articles to re-establish my "geek cred", if you will. This article details the trials and tribulations of turning a perfectly good Apple PowerBook into a tri-boot system with Mac OS X, Yellow Dog Linux and Ubuntu Linux. Mac OS X is built of two components, Darwin, the BSD-based Unix underpinnings, and Aqua, the beautiful graphical user interface we Mac heads have all grown to love. However, there are other operating systems and other work environments that can be installed on an Apple system, based on popular open source Linux applications. If you’re looking for Intel-based versions of Linux, there are dozens and dozens, but the PowerPC chip cuts those options down quite a bit. I decided it’d be interesting to install the most popular Linux for PowerPC -

Q: Why does my color output look different from what I see on my screen?
        A:
Mac OS X includes the latest version of Apple's ColorSync, color matching software. This new version of ColorSync is designed to automatically tune itself to produce the best color output based on the users display monitor and display settings. Apple OS X new architecture defaults to ColorSync on, and since this new feature is designed to match each users unique monitor and display settings, it creates the color difference between the screen colors and the printed colors.
Q: Which EPSON digital cameras are supported by Mac OS X native mode directly?
        A:
The PhotoPC 3100Z, PhotoPC L-410 and Epson L-500V.
Q: Why did EPSON delay development of OS X compatible driver for its Professional Wide Format Printers?

    FAQ - The Benchmarks

    August 2005:
The Mac OS X Benchmark (v1.02) is now available! It is intended for Mac OS X version 10.3.
NOTE: A scoring tool for Mac OS X systems is currently under development and will be released in December 2005. The Download Files Include:
    • CIS_OSX_Benchmark_v1.02.pdf - the Benchmark document contains detailed instructions for implementing the steps necessary for CIS Level-1 security.>
What are the Benchmark and Tool? The Benchmark is a compilation of security configuration actions and settings that "harden" Mac OS X operating systems. It is a CIS Level-I Benchmark the prudent level of minimum due care for operating system security. Level-I Benchmark settings/actions: 1. can be understood and performed by system administrators with any level of security knowledge and experience. 2. are unlikely to cause an interruption of service to the operating system or the applications that run on it. 3. can be automatically monitored either by CIS Scoring Tools or by CIS-certified tools available from software vendors.
